Kangaroo Meat
For any of the Aussies out there or for anybody else who is lucky enough to have access to Kangaroo Meat, I suggest trying it out as an excellent source of lean protein. I get two kinds from the supermarket (Coles):
Kangaroo Steaks (per 150g serve):
166 kcal
32g Protein
3g Carbs
2.6g Fat
Kangaroo Mince (per 125g serve)
150 kcal
30g Protein
1.8g Carbs
2.05g Fat
As you can see, quite lean... and I honestly think that some of the steaks I've prepared rival most of hte beef steaks I've had... they're that good. The burgers that I make from the mince are good, but of course, nothing beats a fatty beef burger in taste... enjoy.

I am a big fan of kangaroo meat as well. I went to a BBQ on the weekend and took along kangaroo sausages. They are 17gram protein and 1.7grams fat per 100gram server. And they are really cheap at about $6/kg.
Here is a good article from the CSIRO about some of it's other benefits.
Kangaroo meat - health secret revealed
The meat of Australia's bush kangaroo may be the highest known source of the healthy fat CLA, a University of Western Australia and CSIRO sponsored PhD student has discovered.
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is found in dairy products, beef and lamb.
In trials, CLA has been shown to possess potential anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetes properties, in addition to reducing obesity and atherosclerosis (high blood pressure).
PhD student Clare Engelke has found that the meat-fat of the Western Grey kangaroo in some circumstances has up to five times higher CLA content than lamb.
"Australian pastoral lamb is considered to be a relatively high source of CLA, so I was surprised to find the levels in kangaroos were that much higher in comparison," Ms Engelke said.
Her study is believed to be the first research on CLA levels in kangaroos available in the public domain.
In collaboration with the University of Adelaide, Ms Engelke compared CLA levels in Western Grey kangaroos and lambs from the Badgingarra region in Western Australia and analysed tissue samples of other Western Greys, Red and Eastern Grey kangaroos from different areas of Australia.
Although kangaroos are not a true ruminant, Ms Engelke became interested in researching Australia's national icon for her PhD in agricultural science because, like ruminants, kangaroos ferment food in their foregut. CLA is produced in the stomach and tissues of ruminant animals such as sheep and cattle during the digestion process.
In Australia, kangaroo meat has traditionally been used for pet food but the European market for the meat grew by 30 percent following the 2001 outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
CSIRO Project Leader Dr Andre Wright said kangaroo meat was very lean with a two per cent fat content.
"Kangaroo meat also has high levels of protein, iron and zinc," Dr Wright said.
Ms Engelke is now working to identify the 'bugs' in the kangaroo's foregut responsible for producing CLA.
"My aim is to find out which microorganisms and circumstances are responsible for CLA formation and why kangaroo meat appears to be the highest known source of these healthy fats," Ms Engelke said.
If successful, it may be possible to increase the CLA content of other meats and products to increase potential health benefits to consumers.
Edited Betacam footage of Ms Engelke culturing bacteria in a laboratory is be available at the media conference.

yes WHERE!! i bet you have a friend at coles that just labels it as "bones" or dump stock
also kangaroo does have a tendancy to smell a little, although one you wash it, and cook it proper its exactly like a good steak, im pretty good at cooking them now, nice and tender, medium rare is the way to go, sear (dont burn!) on each side for 1min, then lower heat and cook for 3-4mins on each side

How cheap is cheap? How much for a 3lb tub of VP2 for example?

I don't like the taste of kangaroo sausages, although they are much better for you than regular sausages.

i dont like kangaroo sausages or mince, because its often low-quality kangaroo and they add stuff to it, i only buy 100% kangaroo topside steaks (topside is the best and cheapest)

easy marinades/recipes??
I've just discovered kangaroo meat too :-) It definetly has its own taste, though it is nice. I havent quite mastered the cooking technique yet though. I've been cooking it on high heat, in my breville health grill, but it still turns dry.
If anyone has any good healthy marinades/recipes or cooking methods for kangaroo...feel free to share them! thanks

i don't have any seceret for cooking it it is a low fat meat and so it basicall has to be cooked fast on high heat i have mine very bloody just seared on both sides and that's how i like my meat and it is very tender.

actually i've found cooking the steaks only works if you butterfly them, or else it gets much to raw in the middle, for any tastes (IMO) a little raw in the middle is ok but i find cooking in only 2mins a side with a huge chunk is too little
what i do i sear it on high heat for 1min a side or so (just so it changes colour and locks in the flavor) then throw it on the lowest heat and cook for 3-4mins a side
