Does shaving with the grain mean shaving upwards or downwards?

The direction towards where the hair growth is, where it feels smooth if you rub that way. Downward if it's the face.

Against the grain would obviously mean against the way the hair grows. So shaving with the grain would be shaving downward on the face and upward on the neck.

With the grain = your razor should move in the same direction in which the hair grows

People have been saying with the grain is "up" when referring to the neck.
I must have unique neck hair patterns: almost all my neck hair runs "up", but the part on the underside of my mouth is a down pattern. Anyone else?

I shave with the grain first (if my facial hair is considerably long) and then shave against the grain. I personally feel it gets much closer.
But to be honest, I hardly ever use a hand razor. I use a bear trimmer/electric razor all the time. I find it easy and much more comfortable (avoiding razor burns etc), if I just keep the stubble look for a beard (using trimmer), and use an electric razor to get close on my neck.

Mine is down all over. I've never heard of upward growing neck hair, but then its not something that interests me.

You hair grows down all along your neck? Weird. Definitely the first time I've heard that. By neck, I'm not talking about the chin area or the face, but the actual neck. My neck hair grows below my adams apple and upwards. It's pretty simple to find out, grow your hair our and run your finger from your chin all the way down your neck... you can feel it going against the grain.

"Men: shaving ?with the grain? normally means downwards on cheeks,
chin and mustache area, upwards on the neck ? don?t press too hard
with your razor, especially around the sensitive neck area."
I think you're some kinda freak.

do not shave against the grain. you'll probably get razor burn, and the shave won't be as smooth, and you'll just end up irritating your skin more.
