like $30 a month, food lasts a long time, dog doesnt need to go to vet very often, toys usually last pretty long.
30 bucks a month isnt that bad

Depends on how you are going to use the dog.

didnt see what kind of dog you wanted, but if your going for a bigger dog, naturally it will cost more. Eats more, plays harder, usually some bigger dos have health issues, etc

you incur a lot of costs the first year accumulating all the "stuff" that comes w/ owning a dog-if you have a decent vet that doesn't rip you off the overall cost is not bad at all.

A GOOD dog, that is, not one of the piece of **** $100 ones from petsmart that are full of problems etc, will run you about $1800 or more from a breeder. That's the way you want to go. Also, shots in the future etc. It's not even the financial cost, it's the time cost. It's not like a cat where you just let it at home and play every so often.

Depends on the dog. There are food bills, vet bills, grooming bills, and other stuff you might get for the dog.

i have an english bull terrier, and i dont think that they are very expensive to take care of.depending on the food you buy its about 30-40 a month, but now you need a rabies tag and all vaccinations which is pretty expensive. also if they get worms or fleas the meds arent really cheap. flea meds cost about 50 bucks for 3 months and heart worm meds are about 15 dollars. this should give you a good estimate. but it also depends on what brands of meds you buy. there is lots of variables, but having a dog is great, hes part of my family

x2, my parents breed dogs and although price is largely relative to area of the country you are in 1800 is a price I would only pay for a champion bloodline dog. By and large most people give a f*ck about showing or even breeding there dog and if thats the case they can find a nice dog from a private breeder (a lot of folks have parents on site) with registration for under 500. However, if you're going for a less common breed you should expect to pay more and/or have to travel a ways to find a decent breeder.
edit: aren't dogs at petsmart shelter adoption dogs?

you can get a akc registered dog depending on the breed from anywhere from 150-1500 dollars. the top end being really expensive toy dogs(that all the chicks want) or stuff like english bulldogs.
ive had three registered boxers from 150-300 dollars. all have been great dogs with good blood lines and have lived long lives. we breed two of them and got two litters of puppies for 200 bucks a piece years ago.
the dog that i now own is a 2 year old female that i got spayed when she was a puppy so i never bothered filing her paperwork. just keeping her inside and not planning on breeding her makes alot more sense for me now, plus vets recommend fixingdogs you arent going to breed to cut down on health risk.
i would also recommend checking your local dog pound for a suitable dog there. they run test when the dogs arrive to make sure that they dont have violent tendancy and in mostly all cases your saving a dogs life.
as for food, i feed purina 1(20 bucks a bag) about once a month, toys occasionally(5-10 bucks), shots once a year (100)...so its really not that expensive. just make sure you have the time to spend raising a animal.

I like those dogs, if you're going to spend that kind of cash on a dog you should definately think about finding someone to stud it out too, you can make good cash studding your male out and its far less time consuming that having to own the female and raise the pups etc-usually you get pick of the litter or the cost of the most expensive pup.
edit: there are a lot of people who have both parents on site that don't register their pups and sell them much cheaper, if you're not planning on breeding this is a decent way to go to get a dog for the 200-350 dollar range.

yes they were put up for adoption. as you mentioned most people dont want to spend the time or money on a show dog and it really is a waste to spend almost 2k for a puppy.

Its an admirable thing to take adoption dogs, but they are full grown in a lot of cases and you don't know exactly what kind of abuse they've undergone in the past-I wouldn't want one around kids or anything.

Dogs can be expensive to maintain but the most expensive part is YOUR time. Just make sure u have enough time to devote to one. They're like kids....sometimes worse
Take it from me...they are a LOT of work.
Good luck!

Just food and toys that last long...
Although, for a first time dog a Siberian Husky would be a real challenge for you coz of their dominance temperment, they're gonna be hard to control if you're not experienced with dogs, you should see which dog profile suits you

We used to have a nice rotty and we bred her to a champ (mother was in madison square garden) who lived near us, which was weird b/c we live in a very rural area. He got flown all around the nation for studding purposes-we new the guy so he didn't charge us but pick of litter but usually he made much much more.

that depends a lot on what kind of dog you get though. The first few months will be tough no matter what breed trying to get them to **** where they're supposed to. My parents have a little toy poodle and he practically takes care of himself now. Gets all of his exercise inside the house, eats like a mouse, and then sleeps. My boxer on the other hand constantly needs to be let out, walked, or fed.
