All you soon-to-be COLLEGE students- some advice for your first year in the Dorms!!!!

Originally I wrote a reply to another thread but I decided all the information in the quote/reply was worth a new thread. Below is the quote and my additional information. Let me KNOW if you guys find this useful!

As much whey protein as humanly possible, try to find the cheapest kind online or at a local bulk food store, buy atleast 10 lbs to last you through the months to come.

Canned Tuna and Chicken- Only meat source of protein that can be readily availible

Trail Mix- Mix up healthy almonds, raisins, cheerios, cashews, peanuts, you name it put that **** in there.

From the cafe:

Breakfast- always eat a bran cereal option, some milk, hopefully eggs, and maybe oats,


Lunch: The deli station will save you, making healthy choices on whole wheat bread loaded with tons of veggies and meat is perfect for any diet.....


Snacking- The salad bar can save you as well, you can find hard boiled eggs, filling veggies, fruits, (you can stash away bananas for later) and the best thing of all COTTAGE CHEESE. Loaded with slow digesting protein.

Dinner or even lunch if possible, load up on tons of chicken breasts or turkey burgers, whatever option is availible. Remove unwanted buns and other ****.

Reccomended items to purchase:

Kashi Trail Mix bars
10 lbs of On Whey or EAS Whey
Rose Acre Farms
Bulk Creatine, 1000 grams for under 20 bucks
Advanced Generic Multi Vitamins



Also stash any food you can on the go, fill a nalgene with milk, fill a container with cottage cheese or anything else yo can get your hands on,


Im not in college yet but from what ive read and everyone ive talked to these are going to be the life saving options.
I'm in college, and that list is 100% true, every bit of it. Only thing I would add, is that you WILL get tired of having the same sandwich for lunch and the same chicken breast for dinner EVERY NIGHT! Also, your cafeteria will close around 9ish and that means you're on your own for the rest of the night (and college kids stay up really late)...inevitably, someone will suggest a "Taco Bell run", etc. These are my tips to help you cope.

1. Have REAL food. (ie. not just nuts or peanut butter) You will really want to go along with your buddies to taco bell when you haven't eaten in about 4 hrs and the only thing you have is cottage cheese or peanut butter. That's what happend to me last yr. This yr. im gonna be smarter..thats why I am going to...

2. Bring a George Foreman and/or toaster oven. (some schools don't allow em, like mine, but im bringing it anyway). These things will help you make real, warm food that is still healthy, quick, and won't drive you crazy after a week of eating it. If you don't bring anything else, BRING A MICROWAVE! A couple people on my floor neglected to bring one, and they paid the price. Just take my word, have AT LEAST a microwave.

3. STEAL food. If you really don't want to bring a foreman or a toaster, bring a backpack with you to dinner at the cafeteria with plastic freezer bags. Load up on food/ sandwhiches on your tray and when you sit down put the extra food in the bags. This combined with a George Foreman/ or some healthy frozen food (the South Beach Diet ones aren't that bad really and have whole wheat pasta) will put an end to the late night fast food run.

4. If you plan on drinking in college, the worst part for your body is after the party when you CRAVE (not "want" or "feel like"...but "CRAVE") some fast food. After a party, my local Taco Bell is BACKED UP with college kids getting food (like a 30 min wait in the drive thru). I don't have any full-proof advice for this except one thing- "have something better back at your room". My school makes REALLY good chicken parmigiana, so whenever they make it, I steal about 10 of em and stuff em in the freezer. After every party, I come back to my room and eat them. Much healthier than TB.

5. And finally....DRINKING. My advice may not be what your looking for, but Im going to say it anyway. YOU ARE YOUNG! Enjoy yourselves and if you really want to drink that drink and go to that party, then do it in moderation. Never pregame heavy, just do it light and say to yourself "i'll just get beer at the party" (in reality, the keg lines are ridiculously long and you'll get 2-3 cups if your lucky...so you won't get that much alcohol in your body no matter how much you want it at the party). Also, don't rely on alcohol as a crutch to help you socialize with others. Ironically, a drunk girl once explained to me that "in college (everywhere, really) alcohol is the social lubricant".

Despite how completely faded she was, the saying made a lot of sense. However, a lot of guys use it "reactively". IE. when a girl rejects them at a party, etc. they just go straight back to the keg line and throw down a couple more beers until they feel happy again. Don't be like that, have a good time regardless of what happens and you'll find yourself relying less on alcohol in social situations.

and most importanty, YOU DONT NEED ALCOHOL TO HAVE FUN AT PARTIES. I've been the designated driver tons of times. In some ways, its better than drinking at a party. At my college, the DD's hardly ever have to pay to get into a party/get a cup. Also, they can run game at girls without fcking it up due to alcohol causing you to slur/act retarded/ puke (depends on the person really). And, they can offer drunk girls rides back to campus...where they can go back up to his room...and....."look at his vaction pictures or watch a movie" lol.

Now you can really go 3 ways in college as a bodybuilder.
1. Strict bodybuilder- never go out (could miss meals, etc), never drink, no type of meal cheating

2. Casual bodybuilder- go out only on weekends, drinks in moderation, cheats occasionally

3. No longer a bodybuilder - go out 3+ days of the week, drinks almost every day, cheating is all he does.

I opted for #2 because I want to enjoy my college experience while still being healthy. I enjoy myself during the school year and work extra hard at the gym during summer. Choose which one you want. Utimately, it is yours to make.

I'm planning to be a casual bodybuilder, too. Although I do think I'll be more strict with my diet than 95% of my fellow students will.

I'm out of the dorms now and am happy as hell.


2 Things to add though.

1. If you plan on drinking in your room DON'T leave the cans laying around, use plastic cups. Much easier to get rid of if your RA comes over.


2. EMPHASIS on bringing a Foreman, Microwave and Minifridge. They are a great thing to have and it gives your diet amazing flexibility.

This man speaks the truth! Cans are the worst idea in a dorm room, all it takes is one lying around to get you in big trouble. Be careful the first week because the RA's will want to make a "tough" impression and will bust a lot of the freshman who inevitably overdo it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the fridge. That is also a necessity. Trust us on this one, you NEED a fridge and microwave.

the foreman grill is the best thing I brought with my to college. Get a great value bag of chicken breasts at wal-mart for 6 bucks with 5 breasts in it. Also you can get five dozen eggs for like 4 bucks

College can seriously destroy you if you aren't paying attention to what you are doing. It is also very easy to get caught up in the craze of partying while living in the dorms. I went from a skinny 165 to a fatass 192 in my FIRST SEMESTER at college. Yes that was 27 lbs in just over 3 months. I was not into the bodybuilding culture or healthy eating or anything at the time, so everyone here already has an advantage just by knowing a bit about health.

I would not recommend totally abstaining from booze, partying and going out. Your college experience will be 100x better if you dont sit around in your room because you are too anal to have a drink on a friday night. Just do it in moderation. Don't play drinking games, and don't get blacked-out retarded drunk. You will have a blast.

i'm in university and a #2 lol, i even slacked off quite a bit during the year and leaned onto #3 for a bit but i brought myself back haha...I can't lie, getting shi!faced it fun but getting big is fun too..from time to time everyone goes to #3 , just don't forget to bring yourself back to #2 or #1 even.

PS. Everything the first post said is true. I wish I had followed it in my freshman year. Well there's always another year

Here's a tip that I discovered:

When you finish that protein shake and don't feel like putting shoes on and walking down the hall to rinse out your shaker, just throw it in the fridge! The milk/water thats still lingering the shaker will stay fresh for days. No awful stench. And when its time for your next shake, you don't need to rinse out the bottle because its not goss at all. I did this all through my first year and only had to rinse out my shaker about once a month.

please please please don't leave yoru shaker around. I did this and did not make many friend as it stunk if you took the top off (I found one lieing under my bed for probably a good portion of the semester). Also., if you are taking Whey make sure you drink lots of water or something. I use to clear out dorm rooms with my gas, it was awesome though. But yea, ahve fun it's your first year. If you are staying active with a sport or lifting you won't have to worry about the Freshman 15. I ate crap food and didn't put on any weight. Then again I played rugby.

I am sort of like you; I will be a number 2 this year, first year of college.

I will have my little stock of healthier foods, such as oats, peanuts, PB and J, stuff like that, but I will be eating lots of fast food (well, ill try to balance it). Maybe 70% of my 4000 cals will be fast food but try to stay healthier (i.e. mc donalds chicken club), and 30% healthier stuff like whey protein and stuff. I will also be drinking a little, not 3 times a week but maybe a few beers on fri or sat night..d epends.

Yeah great list. I will probably be a #2.. I am a #1 now, and I am doing that so when I get to college I will be big enough that I can get some confidence, and not have to worry about doing it when I get there. Luckily I am pretty much self sufficient(ie don't need parents anymore) diet wise, and UT has pretty good cafeterias. I just load up on eggs in the morning, even though the cafeteria lady gives me a weird look every time I say 4 eggs(where in reality, they take pretty big scoops out and it ends up being like 6 eggs).

I really think everyone should opt for choice #2 as well.....


you are indeed young and need to experience certain things. You can still gain muscle or loose fat but it might not come in the proportions or the speed you ultimately desire.

You have the rest of your life to bodybuild, why not have major goals like that when you work a boring desk job in the future, wouldnt it be nice to have something to strive for when youre in your late 20's to early 40;s besides work.
