Reality of Paradise and Hell

Introduction

All praise is to God (swt). May the peace and blessings of God (swt) be upon the Messenger, the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (saws). And to his (saws) Family, Companions and to all those who follow him (saws) till the Day of Judgment.

This compilation is just a broad introduction to Heaven and Hell. There are many books, volumes and booklets written by scholars out there with better descriptions and intricate details. This is for those who do not read a lot but like to know a little about what is in Heaven and Hell.

One of the creedal questions is “What is after life?” From a rational point of view this can only be answered by the one who created life, and that is God (swt). God (swt) has informed the humans through the Qur’an and the authentic narrations (Sunnah) about the life after death, the events that will take place between the moment the human dies to the Day of Resurrection and between the Day of Resurrection to the eternal Hell Fire or Paradise. In this issue I will confine to only the Qur’an and the Sunnah and not to any Greek or Polytheist scriptures, Israelite stories, or the Bible. I do not mean that they are completely false because every nation was sent a Prophet and was informed about life after death but for Muslims the only reliable source are the Qur’an and Sunnah as all other sources were not intact, preserved and made abrogated by the Islam.

The description of Hell (Hell Fire), Heaven (Paradise) and the reality of both types of inheritors should be in itself a motivation for the believers to be steadfast in obedience to God's (swt) commands and stay away from those of His (swt) prohibitions. There is no need for a conceptual discussion or a comprehensive explanation of the forms of Punishments and Rewards but rather the natural agitation for the believers should be to attain the pleasure of God (swt) at all times.

However the reports of the kinds of Punishments (azhab) and Rewards (thwab) should not be seen as a symbolic deterrent or a spiritual incitement simply because these events are real and physical unless the reports in itself indicates otherwise. Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) said: “If Heaven and Hell are placed in front of me, these will increase nothing to my Faith and Trust. Meaning, my Faith in the Unseen is so strong that I do not rely on even the vision of my healthy eyes in comparison to it.” [Ahmad].

For those who cannot understand certain explicit authentic reports rationally must not reject it but should question his/her own understanding and not the report itself.

I will like to begin my topic by quoting a hadith reported in Imam Bukhari’s (ra) sahih to illustrate the discussion between the two abodes and its purpose behind their existence.

“Paradise and the Fire (Hell) argued, and the Fire (Hell) said, 'I have been given the privilege of receiving the arrogant and the tyrants.' Paradise said, 'What is the matter with me? Why do only the weak and the humble among the people enter me?' On that, God said to Paradise, 'You are My Mercy which I bestow on whoever I wish of my servants.' Then God said to the (Hell) Fire, 'You are my (means of) punishment by which I punish whoever I wish of my slaves. And each of you will have its fill.' As for the Fire (Hell), it will not be filled till God puts His Foot over it whereupon it will say, 'Qati! Qati!' At that time it will be filled, and its different parts will come closer to each other; and God will not wrong any of His created beings. As regards Paradise, God will create a new creation to fill it with.” [Bukhari]

Reality of Hell

Easy Entrance: “Paradise is surrounded by difficulties and Fire is surrounded by temptations” [Bukhari].

Eternal: "O dwellers of Heaven, now there will be no death; O dwellers of Hell now there will be no death; On hearing this call , the dwellers of Heaven will be delighted and the dwellers of Hell will become more depressed." [Bukhari]

Depth: "If a rock is dropped into Hell, it will remain plummeting for 70 years before touching the pith of Hell". [Muslim]

4 Walls: "Four walls surround Hell. The width of each wall is a walking distance of 40 years".

7 Gates: "Hell has seven gates; one of them is for the one who unsheathes a sword against my Ummah." [Mishkat]

Atmosphere: “Hell was heated for a thousand years and its fire turned red; It was then heated for another thousand years and it became white; it was again heated for another thousand years and it turned black. At present, Hell is pitch black and dark." [Tirmidhi] "The fire in which one will burn is the 70th part of the Fire of Hell.” [Muslim]

Breath: "Once Hell complained to God (swt) against the increasing heat because one portion was eating into another. Then the Lord of the Worlds allowed it to have two breaths -- one during summer and another during winter. Therefore the heat you feel is the effect of the heave of Hell (with it the breath is taken out) and similarly, the rigid cold you experience is the effect of the breath (taken in). [Bukhari]

7 Layers: Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) has said that the gates of Hell are one upon each other. This denotes that Hell has layers. "The Hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire." [Qur'an 4:145].

Note: There is no clear or authentic report regarding the following layers, however some scholars have come up with different names for the Hell Fire. Some say it divides the inmates of Hell others say it is the same Hell described in different ways for emphasis.

Jaheem: The shallowest of the Hells. It is for the Muslim sinners

Hell: It is for the "Mushrikin" (those that associate others with God) and the polytheists

Sa'eer: It is for the Fire worshippers (Magian)

Saqar: It is for those of the Atheist (Mulhidun) and rejecters of Creator

Nata: Also known as Ladha, it is for the disbelieving/disobedient Jews (Yahudi)

Hawiya: It is for the Christians (Nasirin) [not the ones that followed the teachings of Jesus (pbuh)]

Hutama: The deepest level of the Hells. It is for the Hypocrites (Munafiqin)

The great Mufassir, al-Qurtubi, says, "This topic indicates that the kufr of the person who simply disbelieves is not like the kufr of a person who oppresses, disbelieves, rebels and disobeys. There is no doubt that the disbelievers will suffer different levels of punishment in hell, as is known from Qur'an and Sunnah. We know for certain that the punishment of those who oppressed and killed the Prophets and Muslims, and spread corruption and disbelief on earth, will not be the same as the punishment of those who simply disbelieved, but treated the Prophets and Muslims well. Do you not see Abu Taalib, how the Prophet (saws) will bring him up to a shallow level of Hell, because he helped him, protected him and treated him well? The hadith narrated by Muslim from Samurah may be interpreted as referring to the disbelievers, as there is a hadith about Abu Taalib, or it may be interpreted as referring to those monotheists who will be punished". [at-Tadhkirah]

Fuel: "Verily you, (Unbelievers) and the (false) gods that you worship besides God, are (but) fuel for Hell! To it will you (surely) come!" [Qur'an 21: 98] "O Muslims! Save yourselves and your families from the Fire whose fuel is men and stones." [Qur'an 66: 6]

Ibn Mas'ud (ra) explained; "Stones, which are the fuel of Hell, are made of sulphur (brimstone) which God (swt) created in the nearest heaven on the day heaven and earth were created." [Hakim]

Types of Punishments

Creatures: "Verily, there are long-necked camel-like snakes in Hell. If anyone of these smites a dweller of Paradise , he will feel pain for 40 years….Verily, there are donkey size scorpions in Hell. If anyone of these stings a dweller of Hell , he will feel pain for 40 years." [Ahmad] "On the Day of Resurrection, a neck will come out from Hell, having two eyes, two ears and one tongue to see, hear and speak. It will say that it has been designated for three types of persons: a. on every rebellious and stubborn one; b. on everyone who made an associate with God; and c. on the painter of a picture. [Tirmidhi]

Food: “Boiling water will be poured on their heads and it would pierce their skulls until it reaches their stomachs; this will make their guts melt and go down to their feet, then everything would be returned to its original condition again” [Ahmad]. “Indeed the tree of Zaqqum, is the food for the sinful. Like murky oil, it boils within bellies. Like the boiling of scalding water” (Ad-Dukhaan: 43-46). "The dwellers of Hell will experience such intense hunger, that this alone be equal to the terrible torment which will be rendered . Then they will seek for food and they will be given food that will stick to the throat (i.e. it will neither go in nor come out.)" [Mishkat]

Iron and Chains: "In addition there will be rods of Iron (to punish) them. Every time they wish to get away therefrom, due to anguish, they will be forced back therein, and (it will be said). "Taste you the Chastisement of Burning!" [Qur'an 22:21-22]. "If the rod of iron is placed on the ground, all men and jinn put together will not lift it." [Ahmad] "But soon shall they know, when the yokes (shall be) round their necks, and the chains; they shall be dragged along, in the boiling stinging fluid; then in the Fire shall they be burned." [Qur’an 14:50]

Garments: "Their garments of pitch, and their faces covered with Fire." [Qur’an 14:50] According to Ibn Abbas (ra) 'qateran' is melted brass. Dwellers of Hell will be made to wear this dress which is extremely hot. [Ibn Kathir]

Punishment on the bodily parts: "The Fire will burn their faces, and they will grin therein , with their lips displaced." [Qur’an] “The dwellers of Hell will cry so much that ships can sail in their tears, and their tears will be of blood” [Hakim]. "Verily the tongue of the Unbelievers will be pulled out up to one or two 'fersakh' (three miles)and the people will walk over it." "The distance between two shoulders of an Unbeliever will be so wide that it will take three days if a mount covers it rapidly; his jaw-tooth will be equal to mount Uhad, and the thickness of his skin will be equal to the passage of three days." [Muslim] "Those who reject Our Signs. We shall soon hurl into the Fire: As often as their skins are roasted through, We shall replace these for fresh skins, that they may taste the chastisement:, for God is Exalted in Power, Wise." [Qur'an 4: 56]. “The least among the people of Hell in punishment is one whose sandals and laces are of fire from which his brain boils as a pot of water would boil (when set on fire), he will not think that there is anyone being punished more than him, but in reality, he is the least in punishment” [Bukhari]

Some Actions which take you to Hell

Those who are weak to avoid evil: “The inmates of Hell are of five types: The weak who lack power to (avoid evil)...” [Muslim]

Those who conceal knowledge: "Anyone who conceals when asked whilst having knowledge, will have a bridle of Fire in his mouth." [Mishkat]

Those who drink khamr: "God has made a vow that anyone who drinks any intoxicating thing will be made to drink "tinatul khabul " on the Day of Resurrection. "The Companions (ra) submitted" "What is "tinatul khabul"?" He explained: "It is the sweat of the dwellers of hell." [Mishkat]

Those who eat Haram food: "Flesh which has grown out of what is unlawful will not enter Paradise, but Hell is more fitting for all flesh which has grown out of what is unlawful." [Tirmidhi]

Those who advise others but do not practice themselves: "On the night of Ascension I saw some people whose lips were going to be cut with the scissors of Fire. I asked: "O Gabriel ,who are they?" "These are those preachers of your Ummah who called for righteous deeds and forgot about themselves; they read and recited the Book of God but did not put it into practice." [Mishkat] "On the Day of Judgment, a person will be brought and hurled into Hell. His intestines will come out immediately and he will start evolving like the ass with the grinding stone. Having seen this, the men of Hell will centre around him and ask: "What happened to you? You asked us to do good and avoid evil?" "Yes, of course! I asked you to do good and avoid evil but did not do so myself."

Those who boast of their deeds: "Seek refuge with God from the well of sorrows." "What is this well of sorrows?" The Companions (ra) asked He explained: "There is a ditch in Hell, which is such that Hell itself seeks refuge from it 400 times a day." "The devout who repeatedly boast their virtues deeds will be there.” [Mishkat]

Those who give a verdict based upon his mind: “He who introduces an opinion related to the Qur’an based on his ‘Aql he will reserve for himself a place in the Hell-fire” [Bukhari]

Those who miss their Prayers: “What has caused you to enter Hell?’ They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers)” [Qur’an 74: 42-43]

Those who use Gold and Silver utensils to eat and drink: “One who eats and drinks in the utensils of gold and silver or the utensils having something of these metals will have his stomach filled with the Fire of Hell” [Darqutni]

Those who draw Pictures of things that have a soul: "Every picture maker will be in Hell; his pictures will be changed into a living figure who will then give punishment to him." [Bukhari]

Those who commit Suicide: "He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." [Bukhari]

Those who are arrogant: "The arrogant will be raised in the forms of ants, having the body of ants and faces of humans. They will be driven towards the jail of Hell very disgracefully." [Mishkat]

Those who break family ties: "The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise." [Bukhari]

Those of the women who are disobedient to their husbands: “I was shown Hell and I have never seen anything more terrifying than it. And I saw that the majority of its people are women.” They said, “Why, O Messenger of Allaah?” He said, “Because of their ingratitude (kufr).” It was said, “Are they ungrateful to God?” He said, “They are ungrateful to their companions (husbands) and ungrateful for good treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime then she sees one (undesirable) thing in you, she will say, ‘I have never had anything good from you.’” [Bukhari]

Reality of Heaven

Unimaginable: "God says: I have readied for my righteous servants such provision which the eye has never seen, the ear has never heard of, the human mind has never imagined of" [Muslim]

Unchanged: “The description of Paradise which the Muttaqun (pious and righteous people who fear God) have been promised is that in it are rivers of water the taste and smell of which are not changed; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine delicious to those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey (clear and pure) therein for them is every kind of fruit; and forgiveness from their Lord” [Qur’an 47:15]

8 Gates: "Paradise has eight gates, and one of them is called Ar-Raiyan through which none will enter but those who observe fasting." [Bukhari] "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, the distance between every two gate-posts of Paradise is like the distance between Mecca and Busra (in Sham)." [Bukhari]. “The person that contributes a set of clothing in the path of God, will be called forth by the doors of Heaven "O servant of God! come hither! Those who engaged in Prayer (abundantly) will be beckoned by the "Door of Prayer"; “Those regular in jihad will be beckoned by the "Door of Jihad" Those generous in charity will be beckoned by the "Door of Charity". Abu Bakr (ra) thereupon asked if there would be any person whom all the doors of Heaven will beckon? He replied that he hoped Abu Bakr (ra) would be amongst such persons (whom all the doors of Heaven would beckon.) [Bukhari]

These eight gates are:

1- Gate Of Piety
2- Gate Of Jihad
3- Gate For Those Who Conceal Their Anger
4- Gate of Ar-Raiyan
5- Gate of Ar-Radiyeen
6- Gate of Charity
7- Gate of Tubah (repentance)
8- Gate of Salat (Prayer)

100 Levels: There are 100 levels in Heaven that God has created for those who strive in His path and the distance between each of these is similar to that between the earth and the sky; (therefore). Whenever you ask Heaven of God, ask for Heaven of Firdaus because it is the highest and focal point of Heaven. Upon it is the Arsh of God and in it is the source of the rivers of Heaven. [Bukhari] "The people of Paradise will look at the dwellers of the lofty mansions (i.e. a superior place in Paradise) in the same way as one looks at a brilliant star far away in the East or in the West on the horizon; all that is because of their superiority over one another (in rewards)." On that the people said, "O God's Apostle! Are these lofty mansions for the prophets which nobody else can reach? The Prophet replied," No! "By God in whose Hands my life is, these are for the men who believed in God and also believed in the Apostles." [Bukhari] "Rise to enter Paradise whose width is equal to the Heavens and the Earth." [Muslim]

Tents, Thrones, Gardens, Utensils, Rivers and Trees: "In Paradise there is a tent made of a single hollow pearl sixty miles wide, in each corner of which there are wives who will not see those in the other corners; and the believers will visit and enjoy them. And there are two gardens, the utensils and contents of which are made of silver; and two other gardens, the utensils and contents of which are made of so-and-so (i.e. gold) and nothing will prevent the people staying in the Garden of Eden from seeing their Lord except the curtain of Majesty over His Face." [Bukhari] Sayhan, Jayhan, Euphrates and Nile are all among the rivers of Paradise. [Muslim] "In Paradise there is a tree which is so big that a rider can travel in its shade for one hundred years without passing it; and if you wish, you can recite [Bukhari]

First Person to Enter: “On the day of Judgment I will wish to open the doors of Heaven. The doorkeeper will say to me; Who are you? I will reply: Muhammad. He will then say: I have been commanded to open the doors for you alone. I will not open the door for anyone before you. [Muslim]

Last Person to Enter: "I know the person who will be the last to come out of the (Hell) Fire, and the last to enter Paradise. He will be a man who will come out of the (Hell) Fire crawling, and God will say to him, ‘Go and enter Paradise.’ He will go to it, but he will imagine that it had been filled, and then he will return and say, ‘O Lord, I have found it full.’ God will say, ‘Go and enter Paradise, and you will have what equals the world and ten times as much (or, you will have as much as ten times the like of the world).’ On that, the man will say, ‘Do you mock at me (or laugh at me) though You are the King?" I saw God’s Apostle (while saying that) smiling that his premolar teeth became visible. It is said that will be the lowest in degree amongst the people of Paradise.[Bukhari] “The lowest of people in status in Paradise will be a man whose face God turns away from the Fire towards Paradise, and shows him a tree giving shade. He will say, ‘O Lord, bring me closer to that tree so that I may be in its shade… Then he will enter his house [in Paradise] and his two wives from among al-hoor al-‘Ayn will come in and will say to him, ‘Praise be to God who brought you to life for us and brought us to life for you.’ Then he will say, ‘No one has been given what I have been given.’” [Muslim]

First Group to Enter: The first group to enter Heaven will have illuminated faces like the full moon; Those to follow them will have shining faces like stars of the sky; They will not urinate or defecate there, nor will they spit or need to blow their noses; They will have combs of gold; Their perspiration will have the fragrance of musk; They will have "Oode-Hindi" (a type of fragrant wood) as a fumigant; They will have beautiful, big-eyed damsels as their wives; Their behavior and character will be uniform; They will resemble their progenitor, Adam (as) in height. [Bukhari] "Verily! 70,000 or 700,000 of my followers will enter Paradise altogether; so that the first and the last amongst them will enter at the same time, and their faces will be glittering like the bright full moon." [Bukhari]

The lowest and the highest in Heaven: “Moses (as) enquired from God (swt): Who will be the lowest dweller of Heaven? He replied: The person who will reach Heaven after everyone else had entered therein. It will be said to him: You may enter now. He will say: O Lord! how can I, now that the people have occupied all the space and claimed all it's possessions? It will be said to him: Does it please you that you will be granted a kingdom equal to the kingdom of a worldly king? He will reply: I am satisfied. It will then be said to him: You will be granted this and so much more and so much more and so much more. At the fifth time, he will exclaim: O my Lord! I am pleased with this much! God (swt) will then say to him: You will be granted this much and tenfold more and you will be granted that which your heart desires and that which pleases your eye! He will reply: O my Lord! I am well-pleased. Thereafter Moses (as) enquired regarding the highest dweller of Heaven? It was replied: He will be my chosen and beloved one. I have prepared all honor and status for him and set a seal upon it; I have prepared that which no eye has observed, no ear has ever heard and no mind has ever perceived.” [Muslim]

The Ten Companions who were given Paradise:

“Abu Bakr will be in Paradise, ‘Umar will be in Paradise, ‘Uthmaan will be in Paradise, ‘Ali will be in Paradise, Talhah will be in Paradise, al-Zubayr will be in Paradise, ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf will be in Paradise, Sa’d (ibn Abi Waqqaas) will be in Paradise, Sa’eed (ibn Zayd) will be in Paradise, and Abu ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarraah will be in Paradise.” [Tirmidhi]

Reality of the Inhabitants of Paradise

No Waste or Suffering: “The inmates of Paradise would eat and drink but would neither spit, nor pass water, nor void excrement, nor suffer catarrh. [Muslim]

Everlasting Youth, Prestige and Beauty: “He who would get into Paradise (would be made to enjoy such an everlasting) bliss that he would neither become destitute, nor would his clothes wear out, nor his youth would decline” [Muslim]. There would be an announcer (in Paradise) who would make this announcement: Verily! there is in store for you (everlasting) health and that you should never fall ill and that you live (forever) and do not die at all. And that you would remain young and never grow old. And that you would always live in affluent circumstances and never become destitute, as words of God, the Exalted and Glorious, are: "And it would be announced to them: This is the Paradise. You have been made to inherit it for what you used to do." [Muslim]

Hairless and Young: "The inhabitants of Paradise will enter Paradise hairless, beardless with their eyes anointed with collyrium, aged thirty or thirty-three years."[Tirmidhi]

Wearing Bracelets and Silk: Truly, God will admit those who believe (in tawhid ) and do righteous good deeds, to Gardens underneath which rivers flow (in Paradise), wherein they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearls and their garments therein will be of silk. [Qur’an 22: 23]

No ill feeling in their breast and they will be on thrones: “Truly! The Muttaqun (pious and righteous people who fear God) will be amidst Gardens and water-springs (Paradise). (It will be said to them): 'Enter therein (Paradise), in peace and security.' "And We shall remove from their breasts any sense of injury (that they may have), (So they will be like) brothers facing each other on thrones.” [Qur’an 15: 45-47]

Be Joyful and have fruits of every kind: Verily, the dwellers of the Paradise, that Day, will be busy in joyful things. They and their wives will be in pleasant shade, reclining on thrones. They will have therein fruits (of all kinds) and all that they ask for. [Qur’an 36: 55-57]

Be served and will not feel any agony: “In the Gardens of delight (Paradise)… They will be served by immortal boys, With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine, Where from they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication” [Qur’an 56: 12 -19]

Not hear any false talk: “In the Gardens of delight (Paradise)… No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting, etc.). But only the saying of: Salam!, Salam!”. [Qur’an 56: 12-26]

Abide therein forever with peace and security: “Enter you therein in peace and security; this is a Day of eternal life!" There they will have all that they desire, and We have more” [Qur’an 50: 34-35]

Be given more power to enjoy the pleasures with their wives: “The believer will be given great sexual potency in Heaven. He will be granted potency equal to that of a hundred men” [Bukhari]. “The person that enters Heaven will be in perpetual Pleasures, Never will he be afflicted in anyway, Nor will his clothing wear away and Never will he loose his youth. [Muslim]

Their wives will sing melodiously: “The women of Heaven will sing so melodiously for their husbands, that the human ear has never heard such melody. Amongst their songs will be the following verses: "We are the chosen beauties, Wives of most honorable husbands, Who look with the coolness of eyes, Who are perpetual, never dying, Who are chaste, never feared, Ever present, never absent." [Bukhari]

Gatherings in the pond of Kauthar with the Prophet of God (saw): Do you know what is "Hauze-Kauthar" (The pond of Kauthar)? It is a pond granted to me by my Lord in Heaven It will be very blessed, My Ummah will gather at it to meet me, It's cups equal the stars in quantity” [Bukhari]

Gatherings in Markets: “There will be a marketplace in Heaven, where the people of Heaven will gather every Friday. A fantastic breeze will blow and sprinkle splendor upon their faces and clothing; as a result, they will look even more beautiful and attractive than before. When their wives will see them in this splendid condition, they will exclaim: By God! You look more handsome than when you departed from us. They will reply: Even your beauty has increased greatly” [Muslim]

Some Actions which take you to Heaven

Those who receive the Mercy of God: None of you would get into Paradise because of his good deeds alone and he would not be rescued from Fire, not even I, but because of the Mercy of God. [Muslim]

Those who preserve their covenant and pray on time: Those who are faithfully true to their trusts and to their covenants; And those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) prayers (at their fixed stated hours). These are indeed the inheritors. Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever. [Qur’an 23: 8-11]

Those who do the Sunnah prayers: “Whoever prays twelve rak'at during the day and night will have a house built for him in paradise: four rak'at before zuhr and two after it, two rak'at after Maghrib, two rak'at after 'isha, and two rak'at before fajr.” [Tirmidhi]

Those who were Poor amongst the Muslims: "I looked at Paradise and found poor people forming the majority of its inhabitants” [Bukhari]

Those Muslim rulers who were just: The inmates of Paradise are of three types: one who wields authority and is just and fair” [Muslim]

Those who are kind to relatives and do not beg: The inmates of Paradise are of three types: …the person who is merciful and kind-hearted towards his relatives and to every pious Muslim, and who does not stretch out his hand in spite of having a large family to support.’ [Muslim]

Those who are Righteous: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person.” [Bukhari]

Those of the Jihad Fighters: "Nobody who enters Paradise likes to go back to the world even if he got everything on the earth, except a Mujahid (one who performs Jihad in the way of God) who wishes to return to the world so that he may be martyred ten times because of the dignity he receives (from God)." [Bukhari]

Those who build a Mosque: “Whoever builds for God a mosque, even if it be tiny, like a bird's nest, God will build for him a house in paradise” [Ahmed]

Those who perfect their Wudhu (Ablution): “If one completes (and perfects) the ablution and then says, 'I testify that there is no god except God, the One Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger," the eight gates of paradise will be opened for him and he may enter any of them that he wishes.” [Muslim]

Those who do not quarrel even though they are on the right: "I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right” [Abu Dawud]

Those who avoid lying when joking: “a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking” [Abu Dawud]

Those with good character: “a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good” [Abu Dawud]

Those who protect their speech and private parts: "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him." [Bukhari]

Those who are Patient when a friend dies: "God says, 'I have nothing to give but Paradise as a reward to my believer slave, who, if I cause his dear friend (or relative) to die, remains patient (and hopes for God's Reward)." [Bukhari]

Those who acquire knowledge to revive Islam: “He whom death overtakes while engaged in acquiring knowledge with a view to reviving Islam with the help of it, there will be one degree between him and the Prophet’s in paradise.” [Tirmidhi]

Those who help others: "The inhabitants of Hell will be drawn up in line, and when one of the inhabitants of Paradise passes them one of them will say, ‘So and so, do you not recognize me? I am the one who gave you a drink.’ And one of them will say, ‘I am the one who gave you water for ablution.’ He will then intercede for him and bring him into Paradise." [Tirmidhi]

Those who are in gatherings of zikhir (remembrance and praise of God): "God (swt) asks them (the Angels concerning those who are in gatherings of zhikr) and He knows best, "What are they seeking protection from?" They tell Him, "From the Fire". He asks, "And have they seen it." They say, "No, by Allaah, O Rabb, They have not seen it." He says, "How would it be if they had seen it?" They say, "They would be even more afraid and anxious to escape it". He (swt) says, "Bear witness that I have forgiven them"” [Bukhari]

Please forgive me for any mistakes in this compilation and please feel free to point them out. Truly the good is from God (swt).

I end with the following supplication:

So you go to hell if you drink an intoxicating substance (wine), yet in paradise there are flowing rivers of wine to drink?

Wouldn't this make god a hipocrite, therefore destined for the lowest level of hell?

If one is arrogant they will go to hell, however, in heaven, they should strive to be at the very top level?

Eating from silver will send one to hell, however, in heaven, there are "the utensils and contents of which are made of silver"?

Arrogance will get you thrown in hell, however, in heaven, "Everlasting Youth, Prestige and Beauty"?

This is a good question actually, and it's good that you ask to clarify these points to yourself.

The "Wine" of Heaven is unlike the "Wine" of Earth, because the Wine of Earth is first of all intoxicating and second of all comes with harmful characteristics.

The "Wine" spoken of in Heaven contains no filth or impurity or negative characteristics. It's really abstract to speak of the purity of food and drink in Heaven in terms of food and drink on Earth.

But to reiterate, it's not hypocrisy to obey God in abstaining from Earthly intoxicants and hope for the promise of Heavenly drink because it involves obeying God and God then rewarding you.

Hypocrisy is when an outward state or act does not reflect an inward state or intention.

And gold, and that's the whole point of Heaven. Earth is the place of abstention for the worship and obedience of God. Your actions on Earth DETERMINE your rank in Heaven. In Heaven, there is no more death or judgment, just purely reward from God for how you used to live.

Ummm, where did you read that? Every single deed will be accounted for, everything you say and even intend.

It's not simple to open up an excel worksheet and say "well I did this, but well, I also did this, so therefore I think I will end up in...".

That would be ridiculous. God is the only Judge and He has clearly outlined His criteria for what makes a good and bad person worthy of Heaven or Hell. When a person mixes and matches Evil and Good, they are in peril as if they had lived a life of pure evil because at the worst case scenario they are hypocrites, and at best, God may not forgive them their deeds and they will be purified in Hell.

Punishment on the bodily parts: "The Fire will burn their faces, and they will grin therein , with their lips displaced." Some Actions which take you to Hell

Those who are weak to avoid evil: “The inmates of Hell are of five types: The weak who lack power to (avoid evil)...” [Muslim]

Those who conceal knowledge: "Anyone who conceals when asked whilst having knowledge, will have a bridle of Fire in his mouth." [Mishkat]

Those who drink khamr: "God has made a vow that anyone who drinks any intoxicating thing will be made to drink "tinatul khabul " on the Day of Resurrection. "The Companions (ra) submitted" "What is "tinatul khabul"?" He explained: "It is the sweat of the dwellers of hell." [Mishkat]

Those who eat Haram food: "Flesh which has grown out of what is unlawful will not enter Paradise, but Hell is more fitting for all flesh which has grown out of what is unlawful." [Tirmidhi]

Those who advise others but do not practice themselves: "On the night of Ascension I saw some people whose lips were going to be cut with the scissors of Fire. I asked: "O Gabriel ,who are they?" "These are those preachers of your Ummah who called for righteous deeds and forgot about themselves; they read and recited the Book of God but did not put it into practice." [Mishkat] "On the Day of Judgment, a person will be brought and hurled into Hell. His intestines will come out immediately and he will start evolving like the ass with the grinding stone. Having seen this, the men of Hell will centre around him and ask: "What happened to you? You asked us to do good and avoid evil?" "Yes, of course! I asked you to do good and avoid evil but did not do so myself."

Those who boast of their deeds: "Seek refuge with God from the well of sorrows." "What is this well of sorrows?" The Companions (ra) asked He explained: "There is a ditch in Hell, which is such that Hell itself seeks refuge from it 400 times a day." "The devout who repeatedly boast their virtues deeds will be there.” [Mishkat]

Those who give a verdict based upon his mind: “He who introduces an opinion related to the Qur’an based on his ‘Aql he will reserve for himself a place in the Hell-fire” [Bukhari]

Those who miss their Prayers: “What has caused you to enter Hell?’ They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers)” [Qur’an 74: 42-43]

Those who use Gold and Silver utensils to eat and drink: “One who eats and drinks in the utensils of gold and silver or the utensils having something of these metals will have his stomach filled with the Fire of Hell” [Darqutni]

Those who draw Pictures of things that have a soul: "Every picture maker will be in Hell; his pictures will be changed into a living figure who will then give punishment to him." [Bukhari]

Those who commit Suicide: "He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." [Bukhari]

Those who are arrogant: "The arrogant will be raised in the forms of ants, having the body of ants and faces of humans. They will be driven towards the jail of Hell very disgracefully." [Mishkat]

Those who break family ties: "The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise." [Bukhari]

Those of the women who are disobedient to their husbands: “I was shown Hell and I have never seen anything more terrifying than it. And I saw that the majority of its people are women.” They said, “Why, O Messenger of Allaah?” He said, “Because of their ingratitude (kufr).” It was said, “Are they ungrateful to God?” He said, “They are ungrateful to their companions (husbands) and ungrateful for good treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime then she sees one (undesirable) thing in you, she will say, ‘I have never had anything good from you.’” [Bukhari]

Let's get a few things clear:

First of all, God has outlined all the things that are sinful and lead to Hell (and often their specific punishments) but also all the things that one can use to get closer to God, repent, and atone for sins.

Off the top of my head I can recount tens of times when God reminds us that all you need to do is sincerely repent, or do a specific act of repentence with sincerity, and ALL YOUR SINS will be forgiven.

So my point is: is humanity in peril? Most of them are, yes. They are tottering on the brink of eternal Damnation

Is there anything they can do to change their entire Hereafter around? Yes, prostrate to God, repent sincerely, seek refuge in God, feel remorse for what they've done, acknowledge that only God can forgive and save them, the list is ENDLESS.

Getting to Hell takes EFFORT since all it takes is repentence for all your sins to be forgiven. This is God's gift and yet people reject it, they disdain from ever prostrating and placing their heads to the ground in humility to God, who controls this life and the next.

All one needs to do is submit one's self to God, admit one's sins, atone for them, and have the INTENTION to change. What distinguishes a believer from a disbeliever? A disbeliever NEVER believes what he's doing is wrong, and never has the intention to get closer to God or abandon his sins or change them for the better. The intention to NEVER do these things DESERVES an ETERNAL compensation

Honest question: So what happens if someone builds a little birdnest-sized mosque, but also uses a silver spoon? Do they go to heaven or hell? I've always wondered what the Muslim perspective was on this, so thank you very much for presenting it so clearly, but it seems like a loving God would make it a little more clear how to be sure where you are heading. I know that if my entrance into heaven were dependant on my works, I'd be in big trouble. Thankfully it is dependant on placing my faith in Christ.

Judgment isn't something you can work out on an Excel Worsheet. Every since thought, belief, and deed is Judged by God, the worth of which is known to God alone except for what you are told.

Now your "believing in Christ" is dandy in that Trinitarianism promises everything for a belief, but so does Islam:

Here is the problem: if you look at it logically, eternity must either be decided by works we do, or by our faith in God. It can not be both. If you try to say that you get to heaven by:
1.) Faith in God
and
2.) Doing A, B, C, & D
Then you are getting to heaven by works, and either you're faith in god is not enough or your god is not great enough.

So my question for you is, which is it in Islam? Do you have to do any actions, besides confessing Alah as God, to get into heaven? Yes or No?

Works that lead you to Hell means they are SINFUL. That doesn't mean they cannot be forgiven through repentence.

It's decided by faith, but works will determine your rank in Heaven and Hell, depending on what God accepts from you or FORGIVES YOU FOR.

No, you don't HAVE TO do any works provided that God forgives you of all your sins (because you sincerely believed in Him).

It's a bit more complicated than that, buddy. First of all, 9/11 terrorists don't even have to go to Hell forever, and neither do Christian missionaries. This is a matter of Judgment and God alone can decide this by peering into the hearts of men.

9/11 guys killed a lot of men, but this is a forgivable sin and God only knows whether it is forgiven. That means that even a sin as big as 9/11 does not necessarily mean time in Hell. Not even one second in Hell.

Contrarily:

WORSHIPPING ANYTHING OR ANYONE in ASSOCIATION with God, in any way shape or form, is the UGLIEST sin imaginable in the sight of God. In fact, God says:

Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases; and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin. (Qur'an 4:48)

That means if the Christian Missionary lived his life for JESUS (pbuh) instead of GOD, the LORD OF JESUS (pbuh), he is in SERIOUS trouble.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “By Him in whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, anyone of this community, Jew or Christian, who hears of me and then dies without believing in me, will be among the inhabitants of the Hellfire.”

That's a VERY serious warning. Again, that does not imply ETERNAL Hell, but it definitely means that you can spend a LIFETIME doing good for other than God, and it won't count ANYTHING towards your salvation.

Muslims today who marry more than one woman, cannot cohabit with more than one simultaneously. There are strict rules guiding sexual relations even on Earth, so I don't see why you make Heaven, which is a place of PURITY, any more lusty than God's guidelines on Earth.

I'd be very careful when claiming that something Jesus (pbuh) *said* contradicts anything in the Qur'an, mostly because people who say these things end up quoting the NT. Apparently the NT says that Jesus (pbuh) said that marriage is only to one person, which is not surprisingly a Talmudic teaching that contradicts the lives of most of the NT Prophets (pbut).

That's why I'm very conservative when hearing what the NT says that Jesus (pbuh) said.

It's also possible that Jesus (pbuh) was talking about something more figurative than earthly "marriage" in Heaven. As you know, Jesus (pbuh) spoke heavily in parables.

But that's what I'm telling you: Jesus (pbuh) didn't say that, the NT SAYS that he said that. Jesus (pbuh) didn't write that sentence there, he didn't even take a look at it and authenticate it. These passages were written after he ascended to Heaven, YEARS after, and remained a huge controversy among Christians for up to 300 years after his ascension.

These are the Trinitarian passages I talk about, usually concentrated heavily in a couple books of the four main Gospels, mainly one though.

You're creating a false dichotomy by putting only two options. Both your options are taking for a fact that the NT accurately conveyed Jesus' quotes. Here's the THIRD option you didn't mention:

Some writers of the NT put words in Jesus' mouth. THEY are the liars, and Jesus said nothing but the Truth. He was neither God NOR a Heretic. The liars among the writers of the NT were the heretics.
