Mangum has been identified by name publicly several times, including by lawyers during press conferences on the case.

According to North Carolina Department of Corrections records, she was born on July 18, 1978, to a truck driver. She grew up the youngest of three children, not far from the house where she claimed she was assaulted in 2006. Durham is a slow-paced Southern town with equally large populations of black and white residents and a history of racial tensions ? including those between a wealthy, predominantly white university community and its poorer black neighbors.

In 1993, when she was 14 years old, Mangum claimed to have been kidnapped by three men, driven to a house in Creedmoor, N.C., 15 miles away from Durham, and raped. She said one of the men was her boyfriend at the time, and was a physically and emotionally abusive man seven years older than she was. Creedmoor Police Chief Ted Pollard said Mangum filed a report on the incident in Aug. 18, 1996, three years after the rapes allegedly took place. The case, however, was not pursued, because the accuser backed away from the charges out of fear for her life, according to her relatives.

whta sucks is they dont prosecute women who falsify rape charges because they say it "discourages real rape victims from coming forward". that is a crock of **** though. women like this make it harder for people to take them seriously.

real women are brutally raped and u get *******s like this who abuse the system to their own benefit and make rape a joke.

she should be jailed for the amount of time the guys would have got if convicted of rape. i think that is fair.

At least Nifong got shut down:

On June 16, 2007, the North Carolina State Bar Disciplinary Committee unanimously voted to strip Nifong of his law license after delivering a verdict of "yes" (i.e., guilty) to 27 of 32 charges.

Committee member Williamson called the case a "fiasco" and Nifong's actions involved "dishonesty, fraud, deceit and misrepresentation." Williamson further stated, "At the time he was facing a primary, and yes, he was politically naive, but we can draw no other conclusion that those initial statements he made were to further his political ambitions." In the end, the panel concluded that "there is no discipline short of disbarment appropriate in this case given the magnitude of the offenses found."

Nifong immediately surrendered his law license and said he would not appeal; through his attorney, he said that disbarment was an appropriate punishment. Nifong is the first sitting district attorney in the history of North Carolina to be disbarred. Earlier in the day, Nifong offered to voluntarily surrender his law license. However, Williamson said that the panel had to issue a ruling, and issued its disbarment order shortly thereafter. The disbarment order will take effect 30 days after Nifong receives the order in writing. Under North Carolina law, Nifong will not be eligible to regain his license until 2012.

In addition to being disbarred, Nifong may face civil and criminal liability for his conduct. Indeed, immediately after the hearing, lawyers for the three players said they will seek to have Nifong held in criminal contempt of court for his false statements. They also said that calls for a federal civil rights investigation into the matter weren't out of line. The players' attorneys have called for an independent investigation into the case, and Cooper is considering whether to open a criminal probe into the affair.

The players' attorneys said on June 18 that their clients are very likely to file a civil suit against Nifong to recover their legal expenses and restore their reputations. It is not known how much they can recover. Nifong has no income aside from his salary as DA, and public records indicate that he has no significant assets other than his home in Durham, real estate in western North Carolina and retirement accounts. According to The News and Observer, the players have racked up $3 million in legal bills.

On June 22, the players' lawyers filed their promised motion asking Superior Court Judge Osmond Smith, who presided over the case, to hold Nifong in contempt. The players also want Nifong to pay for the 60 to 100 hours it took to prove that he misrepresented the DNA evidence. It charges that Nifong violated at least a dozen laws, rules and court orders designed to protect defendants' rights by playing "a game of hide and seek and seek and seek" with evidence that could have cleared the players. It also alleged that Nifong's misconduct "shocks the conscience and defies any notion of accident or negligence." Earlier in June, Smith had filed papers stating that he retained control over the case even though the charges had been dismissed, and has the power to impose his own sanctions against Nifong.

i had a psycho ex gf that threatened to make up charges on me for assault and rape. i called the police they said we can't do anything unless a crime was committed. so i took it into my own hands. i bugged myself 24-7. i tape recorded every aspect of my life. THEN I GOT THE SLUT ON TAPE!!!!!!!! saying she would make **** up. so she tried to call the police i told them it is all on tape!!!! she got all nice when she saw i had it on tape. i went to the university officials as well and the dean of students, had a no contact order put in place against her as well.

had another friend, slept with a girl. she felt bad and didnt want her bf to know she cheated so she said my friend raped her. he was kicked out of the dorm, reputation ruined. people would talk and say he is a rapist. then it went to trial. the girl admitted she made it up!!!!!!!!!! still ruined his life!

another guy in hs. same deal falsely accused came out the girl was making it up.

i have endless stories like this.

False rape accusations are also harmful because, when exposed, they serve to make juries much more cynical (not that cynicism it entirely bad). I can all but guarantee that, because of this case, real rapists will go free (I mean, in the end it should not matter, as evidence is evidence and each case should be decided on its individual merits - but we know it doesn't work that way)
