Pakistan says Rushdie knighthood may spark terrorism..
ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistan demanded on Monday that Britain withdraw a knighthood awarded to author Salman Rushdie, as a government minister said the honour gave a justification for suicide attacks by Muslims.
Angry protesters in several cities torched British flags and beat them with their shoes in protest at the accolade for the Indian-born writer of "The Satanic Verses" and chanted "Death to Britain, death to Rushdie."
Rushdie, 59, was forced to go into hiding for a decade after Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 issued a death sentence over his book "The Satanic Verses," claiming it insulted Islam.
Iran has already accused British leaders of "Islamophobia" after Rushdie -- now Sir Salman -- was awarded the knighthood by
Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday to mark her 81st birthday.
"If somebody has to attack by strapping bombs to his body to protect the honour of the Prophet, then it is justified," Pakistani Religious Affairs Minister Ijaz-ul-Haq told the national assembly.
The minister, the son of military dictator Zia-ul-Haq who died in a plane crash in 1988, later retracted his statement in parliament and said he meant to say that knighting Rushdie could spark terrorism.
"I was explaining that if the British government awards a knighthood to Salman Rushdie -- whose only credibility is that he wrote a blasphemous book -- then such action with encourage extremism," he told AFP.
"If someone blows himself up he will consider himself justified. How can we fight terrorism when those who commit blasphemy are rewarded by the West?" he said.
He said Pakistan should sever diplomatic ties with Britain if it did not withdraw the award, adding: "We demand an apology by the British government. Their action has hurt the sentiments of 1.5 billion Muslims.
The national assembly earlier unanimously passed a resolution condemning the knighthood given to Rushdie.
"We demand that Britain should refrain from such acts which hurt the sentiments of Muslims and take back the title of Sir given to Rushdie," parliamentary affairs minister Sher Afgan said.
The resolution added that the award would encourage "contempt" for the Prophet Mohammed.
Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Tasnim Aslam warned that the British honour would harm efforts to promote understanding between Muslim nations and the West.
"We deplore the decision of the British government to knight him. This, we feel, is insensitive and we would convey our sentiments to the British government," she added.
Dozens of students from hardline Islamic schools in the central Pakistani city of Multan chanted "Death to Rushdie, death to Britain" and set a British flag on fire, witnesses said.
They carried a banner saying "Our protest will continue until Britain withdraws the title."
About the same number of protesters in the eastern cultural hub of Lahore used their shoes to pound burning British flags in a show of disrespect while in Karachi around 200 people rallied outside the mayor's office.
Islamist leaders called for nationwide protests after Friday prayers.
Five people died in the Pakistani capital Islamabad in 1989 in riots against Rushdie's book. Pakistan is an Islamic republic, like neighbouring Iran, and its 160 million population is overwhelmingly Muslim.
The British High Commission (embassy) in Islamabad defended the decision to bestow the knighthood on Rushdie.
"Sir Salman's honour is richly deserved and the reasons for it are self-explanatory," said spokesman Aidan Liddle.
"This knighthood is a reflection of Salman Rushdie's contribution to literature through a long and diverse career."
Rushdie's second novel, "Midnight's Children," won the prestigious Booker Prize in 1981 and was named the best novel in 25 years of the prize in 1993. Rushdie is also a fellow of Britain's Royal Society of Literature.

"and its 160 million population are overwhelmingly Muslim"
Why are they "overwhelmingly" Muslim? This made me laugh.

This may be a better way of stating it. But it seemed to me to have been written to insinuate a nation of that many Muslims was a negative thing. Writers of these articles are trained and educated to use language effectively, as are the editors, it is clearly deliberate.

Because many of those that weren't muslim were put to the sword after the mandate that removed a large portion of India to make Pakistan.

If they beat each other, I don't really care; but when they start attacking others (especially) cops they deserve some form of punishment.

Well they start attacking each other over who won and who lost and often attacking people who just went there to watch a game.

My point is there are crazy people who riot and go ape**** over little stuff all over the world, but it seems when it comes to barbaric acts most people think Muslims.
Look at what happened in Italy a couple months back becuase of a soccer game, a city trashed, hundreds injured, dead policeman, but this doesn't get classified the same as these Muslim guys burning a few flags?
How come no one makes a thread about soccer fans in Europe calling them crazy barbaric and should be put to death?

Who doesn't call soccer hoodlums insane? They get written up constantly in the press as *******s. We don't make threads about them because sore losers are common. Religoius fanatics who riot and pillage over nonsense are less common. With the images that are coming out of the Muslim world it seems that they're looking for reasons to get pissed off. Oh, someone said something cross about Muhammad... let's riot and pillage! WTF? What kind of a thought process justifies such inanity?

I realize they are written up in the press, that's where I heard about it.
I meant the this board more than the press/media.
Why did no one condemn it here?
I see posts that go something like this all the time:
Muslims are a death cult and practise pedophilia.
Muslims are barbarians.
ect.
They post these things because of acts they see on news.
Now let's say I did the same thing?
Europeans are animals.
Europeans are crazy backwards, going nuts over a soccer game.
ect.

I'm not biased in any way - a barbarian is a barbarian and should be gunned down no matter who they are.
There are MANY more incidents of muslim violence because of some percieved slight (no actual physical invocation of any sort) than there are soccer hooligan violence.
I condemn any and all unprovoked violence regardless of the source.

Go right ahead. The big difference is that Europeans (and Latin Americans) get pissed off about losing a soccer match, riot, and calm down. They don't export their terror, they don't threaten or desire to influence how others live their lives, they don't look for reasons to get offended and to riot. Feel free to insult football (soccer) all you want. You're trying to compare very different things.

It's not just Europeans. You are just trying to find a reason to justify the Muslim protests. You yourself are probably going to take part in one of those protests soon.
Oh ya, Indians (Hindus) and Pakis (Muslims) start rioting when their cricket teams lose. Hell they even start attacking the players and their residences/families.
Like I said before, those soccer fans are morons and should be punished (death penalty in the case of someone's murder). Do you propose the same thing for those Muslims?

They are diffirent things, in your opinion, not in mine, I see them as very similar situations, a riot is a riot no matter what.
Are you kidding me? These guys LOVE going insane after a soccer game of course they're looking for a reason to loot/go crazy.

Yes I do, If one of those Muslims commited murder while rioting then he should be dealt with justice as well, and eye for an eye.
I just don't go around making a thread about anything that happens in Muslim countries. Or anything related to Muslim people.
What if I made a thread every time someone in Europe beat his wife? Assault? People make threads on every little thing Islamic people do.

This is not a "little thing". It's worse than a bunch of idiots rioting at a soccer game. The problem with those Muslims is that when they start rioting, it can last for MONTHS. Remember the last "protest" regarding the cartoons? A few people even died during the course of that protest.
