Hall of Fame
I've recently been in a few arguements over who should, and who shouldn't be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. I'd like to get the misc. view on the subject as well. I'll include a poll, and you vote for who you think SHOULD be in the hall of fame, either now or in the future. Also, feel free to post your opinion on the players mentioned. I'll name the players, and my personal opinion.
Barry Bonds- Obviously, Bonds is the easy place to start the discussion. He is argueably the best hitter in history. He is also the poster-child for the "steroid era" in baseball. Ahh, how quickly we forget that just a few years ago baseball was ignoring the presence of anabolics when Sosa and McGwire were breaking records. Now, as Bonds nears "the record" he is vilianized. Bonds, steroids or not, deserves in the hall. His streak of homeruns per at bats during his prime, as well as his on-base and slugging percentages are at the top of history.
Verdict: He should be in
Mark McGwire- As McGwire and Sosa chased the home-run records, baseballs popularity soared and people who had turned from the game were now turning back. McGwire apparel was everywhere, and his status as a slugger grew to almost legendary status. McGwire's solid play and home-run ability made him a widely marketed star with a long career. However, when McGwire's career was over, he suddenly shrunk and was famous for saying "I'm not here to talk about the past" when questioned about his potential steroids use. He, along with Rafael Palmerio have become jokes in the baseball community.
Verdict: Keep him out
Shoeless Joe Jackson- If you don't know about Shoeless Joe Jackson, its because he played almost 100 years ago. Jackson is kept from the Hall because of the infamous Black Sox scandal, which involved his team throwing the world series. 9 players were suspected of throwing the series, Jackson among them. However, take a look at Joe Jackson's series stats and it surely doesn't look like someone trying to throw a game. He batted well over .300. Jackson's involvement in rigging the series is unknown. Many, myself included, believe that Jackson wasn't involved at all. His overall career stats are very impressive
Verdict: Put him in
Pete Rose- The only reason Rose isn't in the hall is because of his involvement with betting on baseball. Rose's career stats would place him right in the hall, but he is still banned from baseball for betting. Baseball's cardinal rule was broken, and the integrity of the game was put in peril. Because of that, and despite his numbers, Pete doesn't have a place in the hall.
Verdict: Stay out
There are other guys to discuss, so feel free to bring others up for discussion. This could get heated, but please stay on topic...
