Why did/are you join the military?
Just wondering? For me it's because the marine recruiter came to my high school 13 years ago in full dress blue's and I liked the look. Yeah stupid reason but turned out to be a good experience

Initially it was to learn a skill, make a little money and get some direction in life.
I stayed because I liked the structure, the job, the people and mostly because I knew after my first hitch I was a 'lifer'.

I'm going to join because I want purpose and order in my life.
That and it may sound dumb but I've wanted to be in the service since I was very little and I can't imagine being older and not having gone in.
The idea of going straight to college and having my whole life just open for me to screw up next year just frightens the hell out of me. I've supposably always been mature for my age but I don't think I'm ready to find a career and stick to it.
The service on the other hand is something I know will be a solid base for almost any field that I want to pursue. If I decide to stick with electronics and technical stuff that I'm already doing the military will definately put that to use. If I decide to go towards law enforcement which I've already been looking into and working towards, then the discipline and background will be set for when I try to become an officer.

It was all about the pink mist man... shooting a bitch in the face while making a difference in the world.
In all seriousness though, I joined because i believe real citizenship can only be earned through service to ones country.

My dad just retired. Thats why I joined. He instilled a desire to fight for freedom in me from birth. I know that sounds stupid but its true. (serious)

I joined because both of my grandparents served back when that meant something to the whole country, they were heroes to me. I wanted to build a strong career foundation, and also have a steady job while taking school on the side. I'd never regret serving my country.

I don't want the 9-5 boring job that gets me nowhere in life and no one cares about. I want to be a Air Force PJ so I'll be loving my job, making a difference in peoples lives everyday, and it'll be different everyday.

Needed the discipline.. Plus I originally went guard to pay for school and get some experience in a job field at the same time...
Realized after Basic and my first 2 week AT that active duty was what I wanted... Been active since July 99...

I told my mom I wanted to be a sniper when I was 8 years old. Yeah, this was during the time when most kids are talking about being a fireman or a doctor. =/
Also, eveyr male in my family has served as far back as I can remember. My great uncle fought for Austria during WW1 as a matter of fact and that always amazed me, even when I was just a little guy. It's a matter of pride, self sacrifice, discipline and not being a part of the typical American culture. It was by far the best decision I ever made in my life but on that note, I wouldn't recommend it for everyone.

It was either join the service or do some jail time...all of the branches were offering **** I knew was too good to be true given my "legal" situation...
The Marine Corps recruiter told me to get the **** out of his office and I kept bugging the Marine recruiters...
8yrs later I'm a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps and it's the best thing that's happened to me.

I did 8 years in the US Army Reserves. Highlights were Basic & AIT; great experience for a young person.
If I had it to do all over again, I'd have gone full-time in the Marines for 4 years. Reserve duty is, frankly, not all that exciting (unless you are activated). C'est la vie.
I got my honorable a few weeks before 9/11...I had almost re-enlisted. My unit was instantly activated, and has been routinely activated for 6-month spans ever since 9/11. I would probably STILL be working on my degree if I stayed in. Fortunately, I got out and finished my degree several years ago. FWIW, there is no way in hell I'd re-enlist in any branch at this point.

I'm joining because I made a decision to serve my country. At least give back 4 years of my life for alowing me to become a US citizen. It took my country, Guam, and protected it under its territory from other invading nations at times of war.
I also want to join because
-traveling
-make cool friends
-school/education
-hands on experience
-cultivate myself with different people
-improve on self discipline
-military benefits
-save some money for my business
