Anyone here suffer from sleep apnea? (serious)
I had to take 2 sleep studies about a month ago and found out that i stop breathing 25 times an hr when i sleep. My dotor wants me to get some machine now that helps me breathe better when i sleep. Does anyone else have this, and if so does the machine help alot and make a big difference?

Are you overweight? If yes, losing the weight will treat sleep apnea most of the time. If not, well, sleeping on the side helps, but yes the machine does help if you have to use it. You have to wear a mask though, and it constantly blows air into your mouth so that it keeps your airway open. (no I don't use it)

The machine is awesome. I am not trying to play "top that" with you but I had it even worse than you. It will help you out immensely. You will sleep better and longer. When you wake up you will feel better. I hope this helps.

My machine is collecting dust in the corner. i always took it off in my sleep. I now use a custom fitted mouth piece that opens my throat. Much better.

I think Sleep Apnea can either be linked to obstruction in the air passage way (in the nose or throat). If you have a severe overbite, that can cause sleep apnea. Or it can linked to psychology problems.

When I was given the opportunity to speak to patients in the sleep medicine ward of the hospital (I'm a medical student) all of them said it made a huge difference, so much so that now they can't sleep without it.

Yep you're right - that's why it affects those who sleep on their back the most. When you enter REM sleep, the muscle in the back of your throat relaxes (more than "normal" in those with sleep apnea) and either blocks off or reduces the diameter of your airway. This relaxation is usually greater under the influence of alcohol, allergens etc.
Family history of sleep apnea gives a predisposition towards acquiring it - although obesity is strongly linked with sleep apnea it isn't the sole contributor. For example, people with larger uvula's or people who have had tonsil or adenoid problems are more likely to suffer sleep apnea.
