Strong press, but weak fly
Me and my friend workout everyday around 5...On our chest day, It's evident that my presses are always stronger than his, but his fly's are always stronger than mine. Ex: My bench is more than his, but when we do incline cable flys, flat flys, ect. he blows me away.
I think the difference would be the upper portion of the pectorials...Which is what fly's work right?
It's not a real big deal, we were just wondering why this is.

depending on your form, a cable flye can incorporate bicep and trapezious muscles.....
keep lifting, and focus on mind-->muscle connection.. w/good form, who cares..
if you want to have a pissing contest, line up about 4 ft. from the urinal and git;r;done..

Sounds like his support muscles for fly's (Bi's etc) are stronger than yours. And your support muscles used in flat benching (tri's etc are more dominant than his.)

Simple. His pecs are stronger than yours, but you are a better bencher. You may bench more because of better technique (i.e. more accessory muscle recruitment), or maybe your accessory muscles are stronger than his.
I have the exact same situation with my training partner. I can bench 30lbs more than him, but he can out flye and even incline press and overhead press me by a significant margin. Simply put, he has stronger muscles, but I know HOW to bench big.

chest flies are a waste of time IMO. Should only be used with preexhaustion, if only. They dont contribute towards progressive training at all

There are too many variables to diagnose remotely.
A way to help tell would be to include your relative performance on OTHER exercises also..

Does it matter that he can do more than you? It's all about building muscle. If you are progressing then who cares...

It's also extremely easy to cheat on flies, I see it everyday. It seems like some people are almost on the ground and working more back and legs than chest. I stand straight up on cable's and don't crossover at all, just bring my hands together just below my waste. It could be that you aren't cheating and he is, I have no idea, just a thought.
Keep in mind this is pertaining to cable flies. You may be referring to a pec deck machine, but either way, you can bend your elbows and do absolutely nothing. I can't stress form enough.

Ive seen huge gains using flies. Another case of each exercise being completely dependent on the person doing them.

maybe he does flyes more than you, and is he shorter? you cant be strong on everything.. you have more pec mass and are a stronger bencher so i'd think he'd be more jealous of you than vice versa
