Question Shake diet + keto???

Hey all,

Just a quick question: A friend of mine is doing a shake / soup diet from one of the leading places in Australia... that claims its a low carb way to get into ketosis...

So I figured I'd have a bit of a look see:

Her daily intake is as follows:
Breakfast: 1 shake
Lunch: Chicken breast + Salad
Dinner: Shake + salad

now (ignoring the fact that the calorie intake in this is way too far in deficit)
The company that makes this claims:
-=-=-=-=-
Our program works by calorie and carbohydrate reduction which forces the body into the natural process of Ketosis a lot faster than normal, so that you spend more time per day burning your energy stores contained in your fat cells. Our diet is different to most other diets because it works quickly, is nutritionally sound, and let's not forget that it tastes great
-=-=-=-=-

However here's the nutritional breakdown of the shakes:

Energy 851kj
Protien 17.4g
Fat (total) 2.0g
-saturated 1.0g
Carbs 28.3g
-sugar 25.5g
Sodium 166mg
Vit A 191 ug
Vit B1 0.28mg
Vit B2 0.43mg
Vit B6 0.41
Vit B12 0.51mg
Niacin 2.6mg
Vit C 10.2mg
Vit D 1.38mg
Vit E 2.5mg
Folate 51 ug
Calcium 400mg
Phosphorus 350mg
Magnesium 82mg
Iron 3.1mg
Zinc 3.1mg
Iodine 38 ug

Does anyone else think that the carbs in this are too high for getting into a ketogenic state? When I looked at them I was amazed to see such a high dosage of carbs - excluding other food it's 51g of sugar a day :S

What do others think of this?
I personally don't think it's being 100% honest with the marketing particularly the ketosis part of things and think that it would cause people to 'baloon' once they come off of this 'diet plan'

Opinions / Comments please.....

(Link to more detailed information available if people want it)

Carbs too high, fat too low. She might be entering ketosis, but its more likely out of pure calorie deprivation than from the actual content of the diet.

Waaaaaaay too much sugar for ANY diet, especially keto. Plus shake diets reduce the thermogenic effect of food and reduce satiety. Eating whole food is always a better choice, except for post workout.

Both of you have mirrored my own thoughts.

When I saw the amount of sugar I couldn't believe it.

I'm almost 100% it's the calorie deficit that would make one ketogenic rather than anything else.

Too bad she's already bought a months supply of this stuff

I think i'll do her up a better eating plan that has decent calorie intake and follows the keto principles

I always thought these shakes / soup diets where bs.
The company is 'Tony Ferguson' ( http://www.tonyferguson.com ) if anyone wants more info.

Thanks for answers - I'd give REPS if I had any

I agree, it looks like she got ripped off unfortunately. Too bad there aren't any miracle diets like that.. i have found all liquid diets to fail because of decreased satiety and increased hunger.

That's not a HUGE calorie deficit...

So it's more like:

203 + CHICKEN (220 kcals) + 203 = 626 kcal

That's a severe caloric deficit for any adult, unless she's slathering her salads in dressings.

Edit: With a months supply for 2 a day, she might be able to turn that around into a a 2-3 months supply of PWO shakes. If you can convince her that she probably isn't doing herself a favor by following their diet.

Is it by any chance called Lipotrim?

There was a thing in the Irish papers today about dentists complaining about bad breath from people doing low carb diets (unlikely, most non-ketoers don't go that low) and Lipotrim.

I've been going round pharmacies asking about it for a friend, and I'm very suspicious about the fact that although it's supposed to be only for people who are obese and have a BMI well over 30, no-one told me I wasn't fat enough or even asked me my weight.
