Well I generally just look at the closet , view from window , kitchen , and bathroom. 10-15 minutes total.
but then again I do pay 800$ a month to live in Bushwick so maybe I'm a moron

It takes like 10-15 minutes. See how new the appliances are, what shape the carpet is in and if the apartment is near a busy highway.
Also, ask if they have any discounts, will give a free months rent when you sign a lease, and if they will give you a discount if you sign a lease within the next couple days.
My apartment rents for $890. I pay $690. They gave me a $300 discount off one months rent since I signed a lease within 24 hours. They also gave me one free month since I signed for 11 1/2 months. I also used rent.com to get a free $100 gift card. With discounts, I pay $200 less a month than what alot of others here pay.

never looked for an apartment but when I am house shopping i will walk in and if I like the house it will usually take me 1/2 hr - 45 minutes the first time. Then the 2nd time i look at it it takes about 1 hr - 1 1/2 hrs because I basically do an inspection.

Besides the stuff already mentioned... Be sure to check the pipes under the sink in the kitchen and bathroom, run the water full blast and make sure they don't leak or clog. Also you can look for mold while checking the pipes. Be sure to check the pantry areas for signs of bugs (ants/roaches), and/or bug removal products.
Make sure there's chicks next door, as opposed to a bunch of dudes.

Make sure you check on **** like parking, cleaning clothes, families around the apartment (are you going to have anklebiters running around and irritating the crap out of you), what kind of people live next to you (can you be loud occasionally/are they loud all the time).
