Wanting to lose my gut
Hey guys, I'm new to this whole idea of dieting and bodybuilding, so I've got some questions. Though I have done my research, there are still a few things I don't understand.
First off, about me: I'm 20 years old, 5'7" and 145lbs. I am a college student currently attending a junior college. I have been to a gym maybe 2 times in my life, and I never really watched what I was eating. Because I have a fast metabolism, for the most part I have remained skinny, but I do have this little layer of fat over my stomach, which drives me crazy.
I recently decided it's time to shape up a little bit. I read alot of these forums and web pages, along with health magazines to get me a general idea of where I am going. I just signed up for a local gym that is in the process of being built (should be finished in about a month), and I began watching what I eat.
Now my goal is to first get rid of that layer of fat over my belly, and then maybe focus more on building up some muscle mass, but that will come later. I understand I will need a combination of both cardio activities and proper nutrition to get myself to this point. Cardio won't be a problem once my gym opens, but for now I'm just riding my bike intensely for about 30 mins 3 times a week.
For nutrition, my diet for the most part consists of these types of items plus a few others I might have forgotten:
Lean meats such as turkey, chicken, tuna, and lean beef
100% whole breads
Nonfat Milk
Veggies (lettuce, tomato, broccoli, asparagus, pickles)
Fruits (strawberries, apples)
High Fiber breakfast cereals
Lots of Water and Crystal Light
plus other little things here and there
Things I have eliminated from my diet:
Mayo
Cheese
White breads
Butter
Fast Food
Ice Cream
Alcohal (Never did drink it, just pointing out that its not a part of my diet)
Any sort of unhealthy snack food (cookies, cupcakes, etc)
I am not getting into this hardcore like some of you guys are, and its not my priority in life at this point, so I am not doing something like a keto diet where I completely cut carbs or totally inconvenience myself. I am also not trying to get down to less than 5% body fat. Not sliced, just trim. I looked around and I think I am going to try to balance my intake to 40/40/20,m as well as keeping the calories down. I have been doing this a week so far, eating mostly what is shown up above and balancing it out based on Fit Day's calculations.
So a few questions,
1) How many calories should I be taking in based on my goal? (I know if I were body building I'd need more, but I am just trying to lose some fat for now)
2) Is my diet proper? ie, Are there any things I should be adding to or removing from it, or eating in moderation only?
3) Am I getting enough cardio activity for the time being? (I also work about 30 hours a week as a food server, where I am on my feet moving around the whole time)
Thanks for the help guys, let me know if you need clarification on something.
