Dextrose/Cheat
Since I've belonged to this forum, I have always heard everyone using Dextrose in their PWO shake. I have always just used a banana, but after really looking into it found that it seems Dextrose is definitly superior to a banana (fructose mainly + fiber) for PWO to stimulate an insulin response to replenish glycogen stores and also blunt cortisol after an intense weightlifting session.
I looked all over for the stuff because I didn't want to order online, but finally found some today at an organic food store. Tried two other organic shops before and they didnt have it, but this one called ArrowRoot had NOW brand Dextrose.
How many grams, on average, do most people use in their PWO shake? Something like 20grams?
Quick confessional here, no I am not anorexic although I have anorexic tendencies when it comes to binging sometimes...
At Arrowroot they had lots of AWESOME organic foods. Cheat went:
1 oven-roasted turkey sandwich on sourdough
1 veggie burger on whole multi-grain bread
2 chocolate chip cookies (they use whole wheat or whole grain for everything, no white)
1 sesame oat cookie
1 bottle of GOAT's milk ... I actually liked it, it was real thick though - similar to buttermilk
Half of some multigrain muffin
The guilt set in ... I ran 2 & 1/2 miles at medium-intensity. How many cals ya think that might've burned?

If you're having a tough time finding it, Dex can also be bought as glucose (dex is just an isomer of glucose, it's the same thing) at any pharmacy area of a general store. I buy a jar of glucose tablets, they taste like big smarties. Diabetics usually use them. I use anywhere from 10-12 g, but I'm small and on a cut. I could use 15-20, but I don't seem to need it. Depending on your goals/diet/body size, the amt. you need will differ.

Ok thanks. I DID find it, but I'll remember that if in case I don't feel like driving all the way out to Arrowroot, which was a hike.

I've read that it's about .8 g per kilo for dex and maltodextrin (which you should consider buying too). I have a scoop (32 g) of dex and a scoop of maltodextrin in my PWO. Add some extreme milk chocolate, and you pretty much have candy.

A negligible amount compared to the number of calories that you consumed.

Dextrose is an ingredient in home brew and as such can be bought in supermarkets (in Australia at least) from supermarkets for about $3 for 1kg
