Can someone connect these mythical characters to RELIGION?
I'm doing a project about the movie Pan's Labyrinth and how it can be connected to the idea of Heaven, Hell & Religion...
there are a few interesting characters in this movie..i'm wondering if anyone can connect these characters to religion/heaven or hell in any way..i'm not familiar with religious characters.
1. a Faun

2. a giant TOAD/FROG

3. a fairy

4. The Pale Man (Bald and naked with no obvious eye sockets and saggy skin, he guards a feast-laden table while wall murals depict him devouring babies. When he's disturbed by the girl, he suddenly places his eyeballs into stigmata-style slits in his palms, fans them in front of his face and goes after her)

Not sure what you exactly mean about connecting them to heaven or hell, but fauns and fairies for example are common amongst pagans. Different cultures have their own unique folklores concerning nature spirits and the like.
If you are wondering if these creatures are connected to heaven or hell, in a Christian sense, I would imagine all such creatues to be grouped together in a negative light. Generally nature spirits, genii, ghosts, are all believed to be demons from a Christian perspective.
From a pagan viewpoint, they are much like humans in that they are conscious entities able to be good or evil, but are unique to their various races. Existing in the causal world, they can occasionally appear before humans or are seen by the sensitive individual.

Faun = an angel
He seemed "mean" at times, but it was for Ofelia's own good
Toad = For a beautiful tree to grow, the roots need to be cleaned. (The toad must've been destroyed)
Cleaning the roots is a hard and messy job, but that's where the main key lies, at the roots.
Fairies = Small signs that we receive in life, sent by the angels (and God)
The Pale scary man = Satan, offering the feast, but coming to kill you once you fall for his temptations

do you know of any symbolism with the toad? does the toad mean anything in any religious way?
also, what about the pregnant mother, the baby, the captain & the doctor..
how would you connect them to religion?

I googled it, and there seems to be various meaning to it.

pregnant mother -> The only thing I can think of is when Ophelia put that "baby" plant under her bed. The mother's pain was cured as long as Ophelia fed the plant.
Plus, I think the presence of the mother helped in demonstrating Captain's evil nature, since he was only concerned with the baby and not the mother.
Interestingly, neither the mother nor any of the audlts believed in Ophelia's "fairy tale."
The Baby -> innocence (think about the end part)
Captain -> He was affiliated with religion, yet he was more evil than any of the communists. He was concerned too much with pride
The doctor -> a good communist
I don't think the "real" world had much symbolism, I think the "fairy" world held much of the symbolism.
The chalk -> if can't find the right door, make your own doors and go through them
The book -> You will be able to understand "holy books" only when you want to, and if you're in the wrong state of mind you won't be able to understand it properly.
hmm...
That's all I can remember right now
