Green Party Candidate Al Gore!

Personally, Id love this to happen. I have always loved the possibility for someone to disrupt the Dem and the Rep monopoly no matter what makes up their politics. The Green Party has always been a fly on the wall. Hopefully, it will turn into an elephant.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton faces a possible new threat to her presidential ambitions.


Former Vice President Al Gore has again been entertaining offers to run for president. Gore has been discussing a run for a third party nomination with family and close aides.


"Al Gore has been energized by the attention he's been receiving as America's leading environmentalist," a political source close to Gore said. "He believes this might present an opportunity to become president or at least try again."


Sources close to Gore said Ralph Nader has sought to recruit the former vice president to run as the candidate for the Green Party. They said Gore has not rejected the offer and was consulting with family and friends to determine the feasibility of such a candidacy.


At this point, Gore stands behind Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in any race for the Democratic presidential nomination. But the polls report that many Democrats who support Clinton could switch their support to Gore.


Still, Gore, largely estranged from former President Bill Clinton since 2000, is said to have concluded that he stands no chance of beating Hillary for the Democratic presidential nomination. But sources close to Gore said the former vice president believes that he could present himself as a genuine liberal in any general election that would include Clinton.


For her part, Clinton has been monitoring Gore's feelers regarding a presidential race. The sources said Clinton has expressed concern that a third party effort by Gore could hurt her chances in the general election.


"Gore is invulnerable on several issues," a political strategist familiar with Gore's consultations said. "Unlike Obama, he can't be attacked as inexperienced; he has much more experience than Hillary. And, he was Bill's vice president."


Nader, a harsh critic of then-President Bill Clinton, was for a time the leader of the Green Party. Nader has used the movement for previous races for the presidency. Nader's campaign was believed to have spoiled Gore's efforts for the presidency in the 2000 election, particularly in the state of Florida where George W. Bush won by only 537 votes. In 1996 and 2000, Nader was the presidential nominee of the Green Party.


Over the last month, Gore's profile has skyrocketed in the wake of his Academy Award for his documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," which examines global warming. On March 21, Gore testified to two congressional panels that global climate change marked the greatest danger in U.S. history and issued a 10-point plan that included an immediate freeze on new emissions from cars and power plants.


"This is not a normal time," Gore said in his first appearance on Capitol Hill since 2001. "We are facing a planetary emergency. I'm fully aware that that phrase sounds shrill to many people's ears. But it is accurate."


Although a handful of Republicans criticized and questioned his research and the factual basis for many of his claims, many Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works


Committee viewed Gore's appearance as a homecoming. The Democrats, with Sen. Hillary Clinton sitting on the committee, said Gore was leading a nationwide movement that sought drastic changes in the environment.


"You have acted for us," said Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Sen. Barbara Boxer, California Democrat. "You have acted more than anyone else."


The sources said Gore, who also serves as an adviser to Google, would quietly test the waters in a series of polls in the spring of 2007. They said his high profile will probably be maintained over the next few months when he publicizes his latest book, "The Assault on Reason" in May. The book is said to be an indictment of American politics.

As insane as it sounds, barring not too many unforseen occurrences in his campaign/positions, I'd have to vote for Gore before I ever voted Billary or Obama.

I mean, talk about ****ing over the Dems. You simply can't go further left than the Green Party. Maybe this will shift the focus of the Democratic Party in a more moderate direction. I've just about given up the Republicans, so maybe this will be a good thing.

Very true.

If he does run, it will be bad for the dems in the short term, but long term wise he will actually help the dems, and then America. I wish the same thing would happen on the right, but I just dont see anyone who would fit the bill. I think for someone to come in on the right, a major catastrophe like 9/11 would have to happen again to prove that the reps are still weak on defense.

Funny how Nader and the green party more then likely cost him the election in 2000 as they took just enough votes away from him....but considering theres no love lost between him and Billary and if she wins he loses much of his voice/message, its a possibility.

I would like to see Gore run.

Two things will come out if Gore runs as the Green Party candidate.

1. Republicans will easily win the Presidency, as the Dem vote will be awash among two candidates.

But the good thing that will come out if Gore ran is:

2. It would open up the publics perception and give a third party, maybe even more, a larger audience, and more recognitian that they just don't get. It would be a start to bringing more parties into the big field and actually challange the 2 party sytem.

No matter how perverse some of his ideas are, his sheer media attention would help future 3rd parties.

exactly... while I don't think he is a good candidate for the presidency, and I don't see him winning from the third party ticket... I see him being the first third party ticket to get a meaningful % of the vote and helping legitimize the smaller political parties trying to break in...

Plus, this could help keep both Hillary and Obama out of the white house... now to keep Guliani and McCain out somehow and get a true conservative (fiscally especially) who can make getting the economy back on track their main goal. I would even support a Bill Clinton style dem who was very fiscally conservative while being more socially liberal than I liked, as long as they can get the fiscal policy back under control.

I was thinking more of Bill Richardson (D, NM Governor, Sec. Energy under B. Clinton, anti-gun control, anti-illegal imigration, leans towards the conservative side on fiscal policy), however I would not really be that opposed to Biden either from what I know of him (although I do admit I would need to learn more about him to make sure there is no poison pill in his ideals as there are several things that I will not vote for a candidate because of)

LOL The Italians have a wonderful saying, the ecologists (greens) are like tomatoes, they're green in the Spring, but turn red in the Summer! Al Gore is the definition of exageration and outright falsehood. His documentary has been exposed as horribly flawed, if not completely misleading. He is a self-important demagogue who has found a platform from which he can comfortably preach his highly questionable "doctrine" while avoiding the "uncomfortable truth" of having to back up his radical statements with scientific proof. He is the perfect candidate for the democratic party.

Al Gore's environmental preaching is very nice to have on in the background, but if he starts trying to force it into people's lives i dont think hes going to find them quite so receptive.

As the above poster says, i think any serious presidential challenge by him would fail before it even started. His half truths would be torn to pieces by the media and opposition parties as soon as he began to pose any serious threat

True. But, the key is that there is a portion of Americans who agree with him and those people need to vote for someone they agree with.

Its like walking into a store that only has Coke and Pepsi. What if the Coke or Pepsi is rotten because the suppliers know that it really doesnt matter if it is or not. You either get Coke or Pepsi. What if you feel like a Dr. Pepper if youre tired of both of them? Sprite?

Monopolies are technically illegal for a reason and our Government is the largest one.
