Well its not just to do with benching more, its that the closer the grip you use, you are incorporating more and more of your triceps. people often use what is called the close grip bench press to induce triceps growth.
For proper form on the bench press your hands should be slightly wider then shoulder width apart.
The wider the grip, the more it will be just chest.
Although making the grip deliberately wider, isn't always neccesarily the best of ideas.

Here's the deal, uless it causes physical pain, do it the right way. there is a way its so specific, tis better. Make sure your arms are at the 4 and 8 oclock positions and that when you bring the bar down all the way your arms are at right angles.

Personally, I think neutral grip stimilates the chest the best (obviously). But I think close grip is a lot better for chest than wide, the thing is if someone has no problem expanding their ribcage and focusing on their chest then widegrip is fine, but if they don't, then wide grip will be doing but front delts for them. Infact I think the #1 reason people's chest doesn't get bigger is because they are using too much front delt

Yeah, for the past three years in college, we've done close-grip because it better positions ourselves of what we are going to do in the games. When a oline or whatever position you are, you are always fighting for hand position and close-grip gives you a better chance in doing it.

No i dont play oline, i play receiver. Close-grip is used all the time for every position, oline needs to establish there hands inside on d-line, receivers need to have there hands inside on db's when they are run blocking. so i think i know what i'm talking about, i've been doing it for a while now....
