Native americans took your approach, and guess what happened to them? The christians nearly wiped them out.
The jews took that approach, and what happened to them? They were the victims of massive persecution by christians in the pogroms, torture and murder by christians in the inquisition, and genocide by christians in nazi germany.
Atheists can't get elected to public office in many places in the US because of christian prejudice and hegemony.
Gays can't marry or have equal rights to non-gays because of christian oppression and persecution.
Wolves can't live in their native environments because the christians slaughter them.
So what you say sounds good on paper, but it doesn't really work that way in real life. When battling christianity, you have to speak out and resist, not back down, give in and succumb. You'll only get trampled that way. christianity is an evil. It's necessary for people to speak out and resist it.

Religious beliefs are not just preferences. They're fundamental ideas on who we are. Its not just as simple as getting along with someone that doesn't like pepporoni on they're pizza. Put that together with the mob culture and long contentious history of religious groups.

They are just trying to continue their way of life. A lot of religious people I met feel that if secular ways continue, then their children or grandchildren will be influenced by these ways and not live like them. I suppose it's a scary thought to think that you're grandchildren will live in a world with different beliefs than yours.

I care that scripture classes persist in public schools: http://www.hillsnews.com.au/news/loc...t/1636018.aspx
http://intepid.com/2009-11-10/11.19
"Did you know that children whose parents make a conscientious decision to have them opt out of Special Religious Education (SRE) are prohibited from any form of instruction during this period? NSW Department of Education policy provides for the supervision of these children but specifies they are not to have access to ‘ethics, values, civics or general religious education.’"
I will stop caring when my future children are not persecuted like I was.

I have no problem at all with anyone elses' religious beliefs until they attempt to somehow apply them to me or the rest of the population by intertwining said beliefs with law, politics, and etc. I've quit caring about arguing over such subjects (and have probably learned all I ever will from doing such), except for the history around them which I find fascinating.
