Why do all bodybuilders smile on stage?
Have you ever asked yourself this question? I thought about this and this question haunts me. To me this seems a bit sycophantic. I never saw Arnold make such grimaces on stage. But today every bodybuilder who is on stage smiles as if his life depended on it. I think it would be much cooler if they all had a totally mean look on their faces this would at least be honest. I think that being totally dehydrated, hungry and weak while having to pose on stage in front of a crowd wearing only a tiny strip of cotton doesn't really make you wanna smile.

No, Arnold smiled on stage as well! Look at the pictures!
Incidently, Mentzer lost to Zane in 1979 (a joke), one of the reasons? Because Zane smiled, while Mentzer had a stoic expression. It matters to the judges.

if thats really what made the difference between who is MR OLYMPIA....don't you think that's not good? I would hope who has the better physique matters more to judges than who smiles...I think we'd all like to believe this is a sport first and not a beauty pageant

ok to be serious now. Stage presence can do a lot for someone in the pros if it's really good. The more you exude the aura of being a winner, the more the judges will take notice of you because you will make yourself more noticeable. After that, it's about the physique to see who will win.

Luke, be honest with me. I am getting the feeling that you have something against me.
You're my favorite Luke at BB.com. Really. Out of all the Lukes around here you're my favorite.

I think Layne may have commented on this in his article, actually.
I always wondered how someone who was onstage looking completely pissed, like an enraged bull about to charge or a caged lion, would do...

rudolph i think you should learn how to smile like the pros.. i know your 'livin in the red' but i think its causing you to have angry thoughts.. the pros smile when they pose because they're in the green.. im sure if they were in the red they would have a mean angry look like you..
its all about bb.com rep power. arnold and those guys didnt smile because the rep system wasnt around yet.. but im sure if it was they would be in the green and smiling on stage.

personally ,is the moment ive been waiting for after 12 or 15 weeks prep, so why not enjoy? also image and confidence create a better look than beeing serious and looking pissed, judges prefer somebody looking happy to someone who looks like he dosent want to be there.

They smile in order to look on stage, for the judges eyes.
