The ingredient (most of which have not been proven to work at all) profile for the (rather expensive) product at the link, "Glucofast", seems to indicate (despite the mumbo-jumbo advertising blah) just the same type of fat burner than most every other.
L-Carnitine
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Guggul
Licorice
Juniper Berries
Gymnema Sylvestre
Banaba Leaf Extract
Chomium Chelate
Cayenne
Bitter Melon
Vanadyl Sulfate
One should not expect much more than a (possibly slightly enhanced) placebo effect from this. Without proper nutrition and exercise it's going to be almost worthless. Most of those:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/fatloss.htm will probably work the same (almost not at all) or slightly better, many of them at much less cost. If you believe in this type of product, maybe just start with an inexpensive one (e.g. DS Basic Cuts). But be aware that if you are setting your hopes high that this type of product will solve the problem at hand, you're most likely in for a huge disappointment.
Furthermore, a OTC fat burner is no medication, and cannot possibly replace metformin or hormone therapy. Your friend must see a qualified doctor for advice.
The thing that you can do is to sit together with her, and prepare a nutrition and workout plan with her, and get her to journal her diet (meticulously!) and exercise.
