Planet Fitness Takes Over World Gym
Quote:
DOVER, NH – Planet Fitness finalized the purchase of the World Gym franchise Monday, according to Mike Grondahl, owner of the low-cost, no-frills Planet Fitness, which is based in Dover, NH. Grondahl would not disclose the exact purchase price but stated it was more than $10 million.
World Gym franchisees will continue to operate their facilities as World Gym locations with all their programming and membership pricing in place. However, if some World Gym franchisees want to switch to the Planet Fitness brand, they will be allowed to do so, says Grondahl. Grondahl plans to keep both franchises operating under their current names and as two divisions of the company.
“We’re not trying to change World Gym into Planet Fitness,” says Grondahl. “We’re taking best practices of Planet Fitness and putting it into World Gym.”
Franchising fees will “stay in line” with what they are now, he says, but they will be paid on a sliding scale that will slide with EFT if corporate is providing marketing material to the franchisee. Franchisees that don’t want marketing help will be left alone, he says.
Immediate plans are to change World Gym’s brand to make it appeal to a broader market, says Grondahl.
“It’s going to be a younger brand, more urban, more edgy, almost Crunch like with a little more of an edge,” he says.
Grondahl dismisses any concerns that the two brands might compete for the same members saying that the Planet Fitness brand is more of a suburban brand while the World Gym brand is more urban.
The company plans to bring marketing expertise to World Gym franchisees who had to rely on marketing consultants in the past, something Grondahl says has held back World Gym from its full potential.
Grondahl’s team will send care packages of new branding materials, pens, literature, T-shirts and other merchandise to the franchisees of the 295 World Gym clubs, and the corporate office will be available to answer franchisee questions, he says.
The deal has been in the works since spring. The Planet Fitness team already has a new mission statement, a new logo and new branding material ready for World Gym franchisees. They also have a 3-D rendering of what World Gym facilities of the future will look like. The new gyms will include three specialized areas that are run as 30 minute or less workout areas—one for 30-minute upper body, one for 30-minute lower body and the third for 15-minute ab workouts—that can run unstaffed. Essentially, these areas will be group exercise areas with no payroll, and they can run nonstop, says Christopher Rondeau, who had been CEO of Planet Fitness franchising but will now be CEO of World Gym. The floor contains cardio, selectorized equipment, free weights and plate-loaded equipment. The new facilities will also offer five glass block tanning rooms and two glass block aqua massage rooms.
A new Web site is also ready for World Gym www.worldgym.com. The Web site will allow franchisees to take online memberships (as Planet Fitness’ Web site already allows). The site will also take balance payments, billing changes and member surveys. Franchisees will be able to change their group fitness schedules quickly on the Web site and order merchandise, buildout/branding materials and printer-ready, front-desk operation paperwork directly off their franchisee login, says Rondeau.
Mike Uretz, former CEO and president of World Gym, will stay with the company for two years as a consultant, Grondahl says.
Uretz says of the purchase, “I’m more excited about this than anything else that I’ve done in my career. They have the infrastructure and the wherewithal to add the things that all World Gym and all gym owners need to be successful. It’ll translate into the World Gym world.
Karin Michaels, who worked in franchisee support at World Gym, will move to Dover in the next few months and continue supporting the World Gym franchisees.
This may not be the last purchase for Planet Fitness. Grondahl has two confidentiality agreements in place with two other club companies, he says.
“You are going to be hearing a lot of noise from us,” Grondahl says.

Romano has a terrific column on this in the new issue of Muscular Development.
For those who don't know, Planet Fitness is the place that has a drawing of a bodybuilder, with a red slash through it, on their entrance. They do not allow deadlifts, do not supply heavy weights and have a "lunk alarm" that goes off everytime someone grunts too loudly or drops weights.
Says the CEO of Planet Fitness(Grondahl)"When somebody's in the gym, and they grunt, it's trying to bring attention to themselves and show everybody how strong they are." Or maybe they are trying to push themselves? I'm not too big on grunting either, but that quote was ridiculous. Then again, that quote is in line with the kind of mediocrity that Planet Fitness encourages. They supply members with pizza and bagels after a workout and encourage a "Judgement Free Zone", which they happily ignore when it comes to bodybuilders or anyone semi-serious about working out.
Romano really tears into Planet Fitness and deservedly so. Could you imagine if the local neighborhood gym had a picture of a fat lady with a red line slashed through it, as in "no fatties allowed." There would be protests en masse, but somehow its alright to pick on a certain unpopular segment of the population.
What is really amusing is that bodybuilders and the bodybuilding world were instrumental in creating this current fitness craze, making it possible for all these gyms to exist and somehow these same people are now being targeted and picked on by the very industry that they gave legs to.

gg. **** PF. I goto a gym called Work Out World. Its pretty good. A few of the employee's realy helped me. It says no loud screaming or grunting, lawl. Me and my buddys have gotten to know the employee's well, and grunting is allowed, hell even the odd scream is allowed ( lol not advised due to the wierd stares you will get, lol). Its pretty laid back. Theres the usuals who i see all the time, and its a good gym. The only thing is the free weights only go up to 90 lbs. (not a prob for me, but some of the big guys wish they had heavier) I dont know what and oldschool gym would be like, but i think mine is perfect atm.

Like World Gym or Planet Fitness?
Planet Fitness is easy to understand, they're basically really cheap($10 a month in some locations), they specialize in going after people who typically are not serious about working out, thus, only a small percentage of their members are actually active. They minimize the amount of equipment available, including dumbbells, and overcharge for things like personal training and so on.

I know there a few who shout like crazy before they are doing a PR or something, to draw attention to themselves, I hate that too but no deadlifts? WTF is this crap!

No deadlifts
No heavy dumbbells(anything above 70...80)
No one-gallon water jugs
No tank tops/sleeveless t's
No squats
No bent over rows
No do' rags, jeans or any type of boots.
This is the future of fitness in America folks Just remember, they are out looking to acquire even more clubs now. Also, the Texan who bought Golds Gym not too long ago is said to be not too friendly towards bodybuilders as well.
Yes, I am in fact saving up for that ultimate dream home gym!

In my area, almost all of the Planet Fitness gyms have been taken over by BALLY, which is THE absolute WORST gym chain EVER.

According to the CEO, there is at least one expulsion of a member at every club(Planet Fitness), every two weeks or so.

I'm glad the 24hr fitness I go to has a lot of good lifters that squat and deadlift. I even saw a 60 yr old guy deadlifting the other day. Pretty impressive for his age.

Hmmmm, I go to a World Gym. Most the people at night are polish guys, I can't imagine them changing anything. If they pull any no squats on me, I'm out of there.

Yes, unfortunately. I didn't believe it at first, but its all true, especially the lunk alarm that goes off when someone grunts or drops weight, so the entire gym can ridicule that person and the staff can come and reprimand them or give them the boot out the door.

I'm glad I have my Ex-Terminator's Gym membership. All free weights (except for one lat tower), power rack, and shrug cage. Last week, I even disabled the Lunk Alarm.

I don't know what's worse....
While it's terrible that Planet Fitness - a gym for people who don't really like to work out - is taking over World Gym ...
it's even worse that Planet Fitness' business model is successful enough for it to generate enough cash to buy out a reputable franchise .

Let me see, so you are saying that your gym frowns upon deadlifts, squats, has a lunk alarm, doesn't allow anything bigger than a 16 ounce water bottle out on the gym floor, prohibits sleeveless t's and tank tops and expressively prohibits "bodybuilders?" Strong crappy gym.
Please learn to read english, because you seem lost to me. How many years have you been living in this country now? Then again, I don't even know why I bother responding to a guy who is on his way to setting a board record for the most bans issued to a single individual.

Well, the business model is pretty simple. Like I said before, cheap monthly rates that attract the none-gym-goer's, so even if they only show up once in a month, they don't feel too guilty about wasting the gym fee's and might let them run longer than if they were at your typical $30-$40 a month gym. They strictly caters to those who aren't too serious about working out, which is a far larger percentage of the overall population than the fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilders.
