A power rack would be MUCH better than a smith machine.

Some like them, some don't. Me personally I'd rather have a power rack.

I had one. Notice I said "had"

There are better options IMO.

I too would go with a power rack. But if you still want a smith machine, they have them at sears. Or at least they do at the one near my house.

i jus got a smiths, i really like it, love the safety aspect of it, if i can't finsh a rep a twist of the wrist and its stays where it is and all i do is slide underneath the bar, stand on my bench and "deadlift" it back to the top ready for my next set : )

I have had both, I'd still have my smith if not for my wrist injury.
First, find a gym that has a good one, DO NOT BUY THE CRAP SMITHS!!!! You need linear bearings for the smooth glide and no sticking point.
Try out the smith for all the exercises you would like to use it for, have someone, who actually knows HOW to use one, show you how to use it properly.
If you like it enough to invest in a good one, go for it.
But you can get into a good power rack for much less than a good smith.

Smith haters seem to all have an agenda, if they ain't buying the other equipment for you, try it and make up your OWN mind.
I've used them on and off for 20 years and never had any problems, I don't know ANYONE personally who has had any problems, but I do know lots of guys who've gotten hurt in plain old safety squat racks.
Everyone in our gym pretty much uses it, including all the personally trainers and pro BBrs, but it is also not the backbone of the workout.
Power racks can be more versatile, but I really liked the smith if I wanted to be able to push myself "beyond capacity" when at home alone.
Try them both before investing YOUR hard earned cash.
Two good sites
http://www.newyorkbarbells.tv/smithgyms.html
http://www.newyorkbarbells.tv/powerracks.html

http://www.fitnessfactory.com/Fitnes...tion&linkid=81

Parabody makes great power racks and smiths and is the next price tier up, then you can jump up to Tuff Stuff or Hoist, but the $$$ increase gets you nothing much different

i agree, go with the power rack. The Smith machine only allows you to lift in a straight line, preventing you from hitting your muscles from different angles like free weights do.

I used a smith machine alot only because I worked out by myself, and the safety aspect assured heavy lifting. I also enjoyed doing behind the neck presses with the machine because I could set it so I wouldn't go to low and hurt myself. Using a smith machine is something you will either like or dislike the first time you try it. I would recommend trying one out at a gym, friends, or store to get your opinion before spending your hard earned cash.
