I am 54 years old and I used to lift back in the 80's and 90's a bit. Never anything serious really just enough to stay in shape for the Navy's fit tests. I retired from US Navy in 99 and quit working out, at the time I was about 165 at 5 ft 6 inches. I guess I just got real lazy in civilian life with a job where I sopend over 50% of my time at a desk and was being a cheapskate I never joined a local health club and started to let myself slide. Add in that I was having at least 1 rum and coke a night and maybe a beer or two on top of that I started down the road to developing a fine pot belly. I just ignored it till the other day when I jumped on scale and saw 210lbs. I guess that was the wakeup call for me.
I talked to my next door neighbor who is a registered dietitian for a local hospital and she set me up with a good diet plan that lets me eat 6 meals a day with less than 1800 calories a day. I also decided to join a local fitness center instead of the home gym routine. Found a training program online which has me doing 45 min cardio sessions 3 days a week, 2 days a week on a overall strength program and 1 day a week of yoga I am down to 196 and feeling 1000% better after only 2 weeks.
My overall plan is to get back down to around 165. here is a pic taken back in 2003 when I was around 180 or so.

New to this forum
Hello All,
I just wanted to introduce myself and share a little bit about how I got started in the sport of bodybuilding:
I had an interest in bodybuilding when I was 18 and found out that my biological father was a professional bodybuilder in the 60?s. I pursued all other sports until I was 21. I had just gotten off my first active duty tour in the military and was home on leave. I was working out at local gym in my hometown and a guy approached me about competing in a bodybuilding show. I said I would, with the condition that he assist me through the whole process. Three months later I stepped up on stage and won my first show. I realized then that I had some talent to go somewhere in the sport.
I do not want to go overboard just share an interesting fact. You can learn more about me on my web site at www.seancalderpersonaltraining.net

What a welcoming and informative intro!
I am new to Bodyspace; this is my first posting to any forum here. I've been exercising since I was 15, but with no knowledge of training techniques, nutrition or supplementation. I finally learned those things in my early 30s; today I am in the best shape of my life (not just my assessment, but my physician's). My next fitness goal: to see just how fit I can be at age 50! Step 1: Pray. Step 2: Don't get seriously ill. Step 3: Avoid injuries. Step 4: If you don't accomplish Steps 2 and 3, repeat Step 1. So far, so good!

Hello
I just wanted to introduce myself. I am 37 years old and I have been working out off and on since I was 14 years old. I love lifting weights and seeing the results. One thing that I have never done is been serious about the workouts, cardio and diet. I would like to try that now and see if I can produce the best physique of my life. I am glad to be a part of this forum and hope to share positive results over the next few years/months.

To Introduce Myself
Hello everyone! I have been working out for about a year now but I haven't been as committed as I should be. I am not in it to compete or anything close to it. I just want to be able to get into a bathing suit (haven't been in one in over 12 years). I am 5'5 and only weight 112 right now (female). I would LOVE to get up to 120 (with some definition). I am patiently reading through the site getting tips on how to obtain my goal. I have been trying to gain weight for most of my life and it's been a huge task. Well, I'll be around the site. Good luck to everyone. Have a wonderful holiday!

Minutes old here on the site.
Found out about it at Thanksgiving Dinner last night... a blast from my past walked into my Uncle's house and he is now a personal trainer who competes with his wife.
She told me about this site.
Hello Phil and Audrey!
Maybe, just maybe I can get into shape enough to compete too...
*looks at abs*
Yeah, going to take a LOT of motivation!

You're not alone. I have the opposite problem but my husband is like you. He's 6 ft 160ish. He has the same problem though when he doesn't eat. Can't gain if you don't eat. He's sometimes too busy at work though and it totally sabotoges all his hard work. Sorry for your struggles. Good luck with your goals.

Hi all... I am a little late posting here cause I already posted in another area, but I wanted to say hi... I'm 43 years old... I have been working out on and off for most of my life. It wasn't until about three years ago that I started again... However it wasn't until about a year ago that I discovered how to do it right... Eating right & working hard... I have gone from about 20% body fat to about 8% where I am now... I am gaining some nice definition even though I know I have a long way to go. I think the people here are terrific and I look forward to participating with all of you. Later... Peace...

I never paid much attention the first time around but I googled "bodybuilder cutting diets?€? before I started and basically developed a diet and its working. I don't have a trainer but since you have one and understands your goal I would hope that he/she has you eating 6 times a day and you should be going thru eggs, chicken and oatmeal like you read about... I am working out everyday and before I do the day starts with the oatmeal and coffee. I do treadmill everyday at the gym and sometimes again at night and I hit one body part a day but pretty much annihilate that body part. Some will say I may be overtraining but I am not... As far as the lagging body parts... you must mix it up which is what I do... I may do 16+ sets for chest each time but its not all the same exercises (more cables than dbs etc...) I increase the weight I lift with every set even if 4-5 reps are all I can manage... I am 41 and I am getting stronger, making muscle gain and losing fat... go figure I thought I was dead after 30... Oh one last thing and you will hear this over and over on these boards.. REST.. I am getting a lot more of it now and I think it helps.. Instead of staying up late watching tv and playing online poker - go to bed.. works for me.. In any case best of luck and I hope you hit your goal.

I like the message you gave to "wanna be bb" because it seems almost identical to the type of training I've been doing lately to fix a problem of no progress. I was makeing gains since I was 35, but now ,being 40 I haven't made any gains for 18 months. After much research I found more age needs more rest so I tried the high intensity methods and several days rest until the next training day,(also helped with spare time) but still no progress. I changed this slightly to a high volume excersise routine (still very heavy but no extras like partials or negatives to avoid injuries) to " anialate the muscle" and then have several days off rest.I found a sudden increase in strength week after week.I am not game to messure myself any more because in the past it leads to dissapointment so I now only go by the strength and the mirror.l

250 to 187 and still learning
Hi,
I'm new to BBC and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I have gone through a tremendous life style change over the last couple years. To make a long story short, I was 250 lbs with high BP and eventually diabetes set in. That was at 40. Since then I have reversed everything and been off all meds within 3 months of the diagnosis. I am currently 44 and 187 lbs. Love to race dirt bikes (Baja style), quads (dunes), skydiving, etc., but I know that I can do better so I am currently working on better nutrition and training. I do appreciate any advice given. My current WO program is P90X.

Dont be decieved by the picture!
HI, I would like to introduce myself but not as new to this site. I have returned after about a year although that's not a lay off but my training has been very up and down,ok more down than up. I changed my job August 2006 and went from sitting in an office for 10 hour shifts with 45 mins cardio at luch time and weights in the evening eating 5/6 meals a day, to walking the beat for 5/6 hours a day and using a pedal cycle to do the same. So the regular meals went out the window, At 40 I was way to tired to go into the gym at the end of the day (I also teach Karate 2 nights a week) and I have found myself eating entirely the wrong foods and drinking no where near enough water. I have now got to a stage after looking like my display picture that I used to dread ever looking like again, no abs, big belly, arms and legs still good but all the weight has gone onto my torso (30lbs). The worst of it now seems that when I do feel like working out I walk out to my gym (in my garden) and open the door and it's like a grey fog just sucks the life out of me and I just bail instead. Now I realise that this does not encourage any others but after looking so good and working so hard to get that way I guess it's a point to note for anyone starting out that one slip and at 40 yrs old things can change very quickly. The good news is I still look good in a T shirt if I 'suck it in' in fact I look better that way than when I was ripped. However I feel wrong and all I want to do is get back to that 180 lbs and get that deffinition back. So if anyone can offer me some advice and motivation in return for the stark warning then I'm standing by...

I'm New and a hard gainer. My workout is with 4 days of rest in between targeted muscles. I have started protein shakes and found new explosive determination to keep beating my last LOW Rep(to faliure) work out session by 3-5 reps. I'll call that an improvement. And with time measurable growth has taken place with bigger muscles and a smaller waist. My magic foods are oatmeal, mixed nuts, pasta, mashed potatoes and gravy. I eat all meats with the fat. Teriyaki Chicken over rice with veggies and extra sauce is another fav.
Fish and seafood is another night out for all you can eat at my local Native American Casino Buffet.
Don't forget to stretch wisely and often to avoid tendenitous or something worse..I use barbell and db's at home.

Newbie Here and ready, willing and anxious to learn
I'm a 39 year old man in the US Army for the last 19+ years. I have had an interest in the sport of bodybuilding and fitness for a long time now. I am particularly interested in how the body can be altered by weights and repetition.
I am married and want to impress my wife when I get back to the US as I am currently in South Korea on a 2 year unaccompained tour. I have always wanted to lift and now since I have been led to BB.com I can see some real changes on the horizon. I am open to any advice any of you can give me. Thank you all for being so open and honest.

Welcome to the Right Place for motivation, inspiration, suggestions. Working out the body for growth is important. But you sparked a bigger portion of our life and that is keeping the Marriage Growing. I've been married 8 years, now. And its funny that woman like to see there men sweating around yard work or home improvements in General, cleaning included(yuck). I like to do push ups during TV commercials. Get pumped, flex and stretch. I try and ignore my wife watching so I don't show off for her. But keep it part of my vision to grow. She has started working her own program now..And I Love her now even more!
Good Luck back in the States!!

Awesome job on changing your lifestyle. Did you start with the advertised P90x? Be safe out there riding. I gave up riding because of a car accident to my hip. But had 3 collision with other riders on trails in Tahuya Rain Forest in Olympia, Washington. I've been accident free in the Wide Open Dunes. I don't know much about diabetes and how it affects your daily life? Glad here yours was reversible!

P90x
Hey BronzeBird,
I started P90X on Oct 11 this year at 203 lbs. Currently I'm at 187 with fat loss and muscle gain. The program is working great for me as my family is naturally overweight. This is the first time that I have ever subscribed to a program like this. Turns out that I was eating healthy but too much of the right foods. I have learned to swap some foods and control intake on others. The support is great and very helpful. It's seems to be a well run program with people that are not self absorbed.

Well I turn 36 on Dec. 20th so I will officially no longer have to lurk in the over 35 section of BB.com.
Howdy!

Welcome to all the new folks. Hope you guys get as much out of this place as I have. I've been a member here now about 3 months and been working on my training plan about 4. The experiences on this site have done wonders for me so here's hoping it works just as well for you.
By the way. Feel free to call me Royce. I'm 6'1", 198lbs and am doing this purely as a question of better health. Okay...maybe there's a little vanity involved. Call it a mid-life crisis thing. LOL.

I did not feel Mature until about 35. Then started thinking about a life long relationship and kids? I got married finally at 40, but never had kids nor my wife. Welcome my friend to Thirty Something! At 47 I still kick ass in Over 18 and Over 35 TKD Tournaments(no chest guards like the Olympics). Eventually I'll get beat down by the Next fighter with a BIGGER Heart. But will have enjoyed the road of my dedication!

Thanks for the advice
Hey thanks guys for the advice, I just returned from R&R in the states so I gained a few pounds from all of the great foods, starting to hit it hard at the gym again. Again thanks for the info. Back to my search for 25lbs.

Another Noob
BB.com is a great website. The motivation factor is pretty high. Thanks for everything. I'll stick around and see what kind of physique I'm capable of sculpting. I'm hoping to pack a total of 265 lbs at 6% bodyfat on my 6' frame, but we'll see if mother nature will allow it. Hopefully, its not too late. I won't fail for the lack of trying though.
See ya'll around and thanks for being there.

New here
My first post.
I've been lurking here a couple weeks.
Age 43 5'11" 180 lbs. b/f 16-17%.
I have been lifting moderately since January '06 and have gained about 20 lbs in muscle. But the fat won't come off and I know its my diet, eating crap sometimes and drinking a beer now and then.
Hopefully this forum will help motivate me to keep a stricter diet and learn better workout routines.

Have you got a routine established yet? I would check out the Rippetoes under Exercises or Routines. Best when used with the Work Out Tracker program on your Body Space Calendar/Records. I find it motivating to see weekly Progress in Most all lifts as a Noob. Knowing my goal on the next workout helps muster the strength to Power Up!
The Plateau means you did it right and will be considered intermediate lifter from what i GATHER in this SEA of useful info. 265 BW, Nice Goal for the Big Man! I'll be doing cartwheels for 205#.
