Senior Basketball Tryouts dilemma
Hey guys, well heres my problem with basketball....tomorrow is my last day to prove myself to the coach that I really want to be in the team. I believe there was 22-24 of us who tried out. Probably like 5-7 of us will be cut, so that reduces the team by around 15-17. You guys might laugh at this, but I have never played on a team sport during my high school years..I wasted 4 of those years just f*cking around (parties, weed...you know the deal) and half of the time i'd be focusing on school (mostly). My friend convinced me to tryout but I suck ass in BBALL. Tomorrow is the last practice to make the team..and I don't want to get cut but I fear the worst. Just this morning we had a practice which wasn't as grueling as I thought it would be. But, I did screw up during the plays..but not as bad as some of the other guys in the team. I can't left hand layup, or shoot with proper form; but my shot is getting better. I am pretty fast (PG) and I can hustle my ass. I've been watching some of the other guys during practice and some of them barely have the will to hustle or the determination to run that extra lap. I asked the coach this morning, if I could come EXTRA early tomorrow and practice my left hand layup. (My friend, once again, convinced me to do this). Does this seem like I'm sucking up to the coach too much? Because he's probably wondering now, that "Why can't he just practice at lunch?". Anyways.. I don't know how Im going to handle being cut....since they'll all probably laugh at me.. Our last practice is basically a scrimmage.
cliffs:
-Tomorrow is the last day for tryouts (1 week tryout)
-Not good at basketball, but determined and willing to try to play basketball if the coach lets me (I suck at plays and sometimes almost find myself freezing at points during the play..not all the plays but just some)
-Hustles & has passion for basketball
-Asked coach if I could practice my left hand layup/shot extra early tomorrow (Morning) even though I could practice during lunch/afterschool
-Scared to know if I get cut or not..cause I really want to make the team.
-No confidence in myself...seriously.

Work your ass off. I don't know what to tell you if you can't lefty layup. Like you can't do it at all, or it isn't very consistent?

i got cut my senior year from the varsity bball team after playing my whole life. it was really hard at first. in your case, a coach will usually have room for a player who is willing to hustle and get on the floor, but if youre having trouble with layups and shooting, im not sure on your chances on a varsity team. 15-17 guys on a team does seem like a lot too, there was 12 on my schools team.
anyways, good luck, just hustle and hope for the best

Here is my suggestion- You need to be the best defensive player on the court. There is some skill to D but sher hustle can outwwill the other guys so work your ass off on D and try to make a few steals. A coach wont cut ya if your fast as lightening and play hard nose D. I mean nasty D whereyou can tell the coach what kinda gum your guy is chewing type D.

getting good with your left is tough, especially for a right handed point guard. one of the best drills i did was the following:
1. stand on the left block
2. place the ball in your left palm and cup it
3. now lift it up without the help of your other hand like you're going to shoot
4. balance, elevate, tuck your elbow, and follow through.
5. just give it a shot straight up, as accurate as you can, so that it goes straight up and falls down right through the net.
do this in front of the basket, too. your goal is to make sure its NOTHING but net, and that you can easily step forward one foot, grab the ball, and repeat the drill. do this at least 100 times, and you should be at the point where 50-75% of the time its nothing but net.
then, just be confident with your left. aim high off the glass and if you use your legs and power to get up then laying it up with your left is as easy as just lifting your left arm with the ball in it.

agreed. SCREAM "ball ball ball" when playing d and use your hands and move your feet like no other, just play aggressive agitating D without reaching or fouling too much. if you do this on one of your team's star players or starters and they get frustrated then you're doing something right, the coach will love that. take charges, dive for balls, and be aggressive on D. playing D is 95% heart and 5% skill, remember that.

...today we had no practice...so I'll have to update you guys on Tuesday..(He moved the date because other teams need to have their tryouts in both gyms).
Thanks for all the replies..I'll take all of these into consideration. My biggest problem right now (as well as skill) is that I have no confidence in whatever the fu*k i do. I wish i could practice before Tuesday..but I am afraid to go to the recreation center where there are guys better than me who play basketball 24/7. Also, it's raining outside...so I can't play basketball outside =/. My chances are slim to none.
I will work on my D though. Thanks for the tips on left handed layups!
LASTLY, there are some douche bag bball players..notably the people who want to be on the starting team. They laugh at all the bad players (myself and others) and whenever I do something wrong, they DO help me correct myself but only when the coach is around. I'm crazy for thinking about joining the senior ball team, but I want this and I want to make it. I won't give up.
I've never missed a single practice and already one of the best players on the team missed 2 practices..and the coach said if any of us miss 3 practices, then we're out. I've always showed up extra early. I always hustle out there. But i feel like this isn't enough. I feel like he's looking for skill more then dedication. That's just the way I see it.

hmm...I'm alright at defense, since I am smaller then most of the guys. I am also very quick on my feet..but my knee injury prevents me from going 100%. Though, on Tuesday, I Will go all out. When I say all out, that means that I'll be moving my feet x10000 just like you said and screaming ball ball ball..even though I'm not used to shouting that out if it's just a scrimmage game. I'll try not to be too nervous. Defense. 95% heart...5% skill.... i'll remember that for sure, cause I always lose faith in myself whenever i'm up against the other PG..

You should record a vid of trying the stuff you need to work on. We could give you some feedback on it.

Not much of a basketball player, but your comment on low self-esteem got to me. I used to have a really low self-esteem, I think if you were to lift (not sure if you are or not, I'd guess though since you have a bb.com account) and just keep at it, you'll start to see improvement, and that's where alot of self-esteem comes in. Don't beat yourself before you get on the court, that's something you can use in any sport.

hey, thx for replying...totally forgot about this thread. Uh, yeah I somewhat lift...but then again, i've just got back into it..so im back to lifting lightweight. Today was horrible. Today was basically the last day to show the coach what I can do for the team..and it just didnt happen. I was getting shutdown...and blanked out and didn't follow the plays. Everytime I messed up, I bowed my head down and shook my head. I didn't know I was doing this, until my friend yelled "DON'T BOW YOUR HEAD DOWN...LOOK UP"...theres somethign totally wrong with me. Not sure what it is, but I barely have any confidence in whatever I do. Tomorrow, he asked us to come to the weightroom for a meeting (CUTS..who made it/who didn't make the team). There are 23 of us. Only 12 will make it..PLUS 3 RED SHIRTS (Practice players and backup).
I hope I don't get cut tomorrow..but chances are I will and I'll most likely not drag myself down on this. I'll still keep playing basketball...great for my cardio...and yeah. It is what it is....:P

Yeah, I'm only slacking in Biology...but I'm bringing it up....everything is basically B-Average.
EDIT: Screw it, If I don't make the team...i'm just going to go back to Wrestling/Weightlifting.. I can't believe I was never in any sports team when I was young.... I was always into single sports (Wrestling, Karate, etc). It was hard adapting to the team environment since everyone was so used to playing on team sports. Wish I had started playing on basketball teams when I was younger...I blew that chance...now I'm left with thinking for the whole night and day if I made the team or not. I'll update you all by tomorrow..

Any sport you play will be as bad or worse on your knee than wrestling. If you want to play give wrestling a go again.

yeah..this new guy on my team (who had a lot of attitude) got cut badly.. he even wore his old schools jersey to the first day of practice..and got lectured (somewhat) by the coach... anyways, hope you make the team next year...cause this is it for me....and I'll most likely not tryout for any other school team for my senior year. Gonna just try to lift a lot of weights, swim, jog...and just try to live a healthier life I Guess....
I'm still gonna stick to basketball though..... Wanna play some recreational ball or somethin :P
