Nausea after workouts- Whats 'normal'?

This was brought up in another thread but I am curious to know how long others feel nauseous after an intense workout?

I have really been pushing hard in the gym, and I notice I feel absolutely sick for about 1-2 hours after working out. Is it normal to be ill for that long? Should I cut back a bit? I love working out hard, but the sickness is getting to me, as I am a big eater and have been having trouble eating after working out now because of this....

suggestions?? comments....

sometimes I feel sick during my workout and that really isn't nice at all - since then I make sure I take a protein shake a half hour before my workout and this seems to help but if I really push myself then I know I'm gonna feel sick...

you said 1-2 but didn't say minutes/hours/days

I'm gonna assume hours - how long is it before you consume something after your workout?

how much are you eating before you workout and how long before you workout was your last meal? How is your breathing during the workout?

Its not normal to get sick every single workout, I have gotten sick from pushing my squats or clean and presses but those are very taxing on the body.

Thanks for the responses....hope this is not too long, just want to be detailed.

Today was an exception, because I tried No-Xplode and it says not to eat 2 hours before taking the supplement and it needs to be taken 45 min prior to working out. So I ate at 8am 1 full egg, 2 egg whites and 1 slice of ww toast. Took No-Xplode at 9:45 and worked out at 10:30ish.

After my workout, I had a protein shake with bananna immediately after. Got home and ate some toast with PB because I was still feeling off. Im just starting to feel better now and my workout was finished around 11:30, and its 1:30 now.

I didnt like No-Xplode, didnt notice any difference and got a headache, so I wont be taking it again....

Normally on workout days, I eat 2-3 eggs, with toast and Coffee first thing (usually between 7-8), then pre workout Ill have a protein shake w/ bananna just before I hit them gym. (I workout from 10:30-11:30)

Get home around 12 and have lunch....I make sure to have protein and carbs.

It's only in the last two weeks, when I have been really pushing hard that I have noticed being nauseous.....Not necessarily to the same degree every workout but it does seem to last 1-2 hours sometimes.

As for the breathing...thats a good point..I should try and pay more attention to my breathing...its very possible that could be the issue.

I agree I would definitely stop the no-xplode if it doesn't agree with you...

have you changed your program recently?

I think it's from really pushing hard, Sunshinelynn has a really good point check your breathing

you could also have a sensitivity to caffeine I know I do

Yep...No-Xplode is gone, lol....Just didnt agree with me at all. I did change my program recently....you can see it on my bodyspace.

I will definitely watch my breathing...I really do think that could be the problem. Ill see what happens on Friday's workout with attention to breathing. Hopefully that helps because I hate feeling like this after my workouts. Such a bummer! I love food too much to feel sick when eating =)

Seems like your eating to close to your workout you say that you eat around 8 and then another protien shake before you workout at 1030....that is your answer right there. When you start doing very taxing workouts if you eat to close to the workout you will indeed get sick from it. Not sure if you should be feeling that way for 1-2hours afterwards but in past experience you are eating to much to close to your workout. Try eating only breakfast and maybe if your still hungry eat an apple or some type of fruit with your breakfast.

Makes sense. I guess up until now my workouts havent been very taxing because Ive always had pre workout shakes without any nausea issues. I just changed my split recently though, and have added exercises and weight.

Thanks for your help!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who replied. My workout today was amazing, no sickness afterwards at all. I cut the shake pre-workout, and concentrated on my breathing...

All is good! Thanks

My two cents...

Just thought I'd mention that for some people, something on the stomach immediately before workouts is essential. If I don't have a protein shake about 10 minutes before I start, I have to leave the gym and come home because I get so nauseated. But I have never gotten an upset stomach from the shake, even on leg day.

This is definitely going to be person dependent and schedule dependent. I work out in the evening, so I have lots of nutrients in my system by the time I work out. I am best if I wait 1.5 hours after eating, otherwise I get nauseous. My preworkout meal is about 300-500 cals though and whole foods, so not small either.

I'm no expert or anything but feeling nauseated can also be due to the lactic acid build up from your workout. I used to get this all the time (especially after leg workouts) and think I was actually going to vomit, but since I started taking creatine tri-malate 20mins before my workout (on an empty stomach) I have felt so much better and even my most taxing workouts have improved and I've felt good for the rest of the day. Creatine tri-malate is cheap and doesn't make me bloated either.

Well as for me...

I personally get sick if I eat any solid food up to two hours before I work out. Even protein shakes I won't drink under an hour before. Everybody is unique though as I have a good friend who I've actually witnessed eating while working out! Leg day typically makes me sick. But I try and push as hard as I can on leg day and I always go heavy down to the 6 rep range on my compound movements. Come to think of it the heavier I go the more likely I'll feel sick. One thing I've figured out over the years is that whether I feel like it or not I need to get carbs in me as soon as I'm finished working out and doing that (even if feeling nauseous) alleviates the feeling to some degree.. The feeling always passes within an hour and I then eat and feel much better

Hi Brooky_babe,

I actually just started taking creatine yesterday but it suggests taking it post workout....Im not having the nausea anymore since I reduced the amount of food I consume pre workout...seems to have helped. Thanks for the reply =)

I completely agree. Ive started adding ground oats and banana in my post workout shake and it seems to have really helped too.

I might start taking creatine, too!! I've been feeling a bit of nausea during my weight workouts, though usually during my squats. I'll see if it helps, and I'll let you know!
