Squats are the first thing I do on leg night ( well after I stretch). I do 3-4 sets of 10reps and I love the workout I get from it.. I think alot of people don't do squats because they can't stand the fact they can't through 4 45lb plates on each side of the bar and do reps (ego).

I work out with 205-220lbs on full squats, sure I can leg press 650lbs when we use it but I get A better workout from squats. Sure it's hard to hold alot of weight on your shoulders and I think thats what seperates the two kinds of bodybuilders, some people are welling to go through the pain to get the results some are not and thats ok to each his own....

Yeah, keeping your knees behind your toes is good for your knees, but much worse for your hips and lower back. 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

The other poster is actually somewhat correct.
The reason being is that 20-rep squats have breaks in between reps without racking the bar.

of course it would.
The old 20 rep squats routine has nothing to do with taking your 10rm and doing it for 20 reps. It's more along the lines of load the barbell with a weight you can do for 10 reps without too much difficulty (ie. not pushing failure, not all out) and doing as many reps as you can with it (20+).

true but at the same time its pretty much ur 10rm without long rest pauses. u use that weight, knock out 20. the way u get 20 is once uve hit your wall you stand there with the weight on your back and take a long rest pause (3 or 4 deep breaths) and when u feel you can knock out one more you do it. correct me if im wrong but that techinically wouldnt be your 20 rep max because u pause for so long almost making the last 6-8 reps singles with long rest breaks.

After high-school football I took a couple years off of squats because I did so f-ing many of them. Then I added them back into my routine and now I have an ass like Vida Guerra and i'm a man

Squat til ya puke then squat some more.

"Squat til ya puke baby then squat some more". When you see the world's greatest bodybuilders ever to hit the stage, the one thing they have in common is great leg development. Only one exercise will give you that. For overall size and adding mass, nothing beats the squat. Besides, who really wants a body that is not truly proportioned. Last I heard, the chicken leg look was out unless you want to be the spokesperson for KFC. You can always spot the wannabe bodybuilders. NO leg work at all. I just started working back my legs a few weeks ago. I am far from having 30" quads but I will tell you that squats really even out your physique and add muscle rather quick.

The Gold's Gym I workout at is a serious hardcore musclehead gym. Guys here take their squatting very seriously otherwise they would be at Bally's or 24 hour fitness. They are smart enough to recognize how important squatting and leg work is. How smart are you?

Next time you're thinking about skipping your leg workout for arms or chest instead. DON'T. You'll see a big difference in your whole appearance within 90 days. But then again........if chicken legs are your thing.......lol

If you dont want knee problems..........then Squat bro.

I had terrible Knees, I've worked construction for 10 years and take probably, 1000-1500 steps up a ladder everyday, besides walking a couple miles during work.

My knees would ache on a consistant basis after work, as would my traps.

I squat A lot, and now, my knees are pain free, PAIN FREE, the reason is I have built up my cartilage/ligaments/tendons, it takes much longer to build those than does muscle (about 4x slower than muscle growth).

Point is squats ARE NOT BAD FOR YOUR KNEES. They need to be done properly, they are perfectly healthy for the knee joint. Good form and non-egotistical weight= good!

I HATE SQUATS WITH A PASSION!!! Doesn't mean I don't do them...Squats and deadlifts are the two best exercises for a person provided they do it correctly. If you don't do squat might as well not workout your legs. It's like going to the gym on chest day and saying I'm not gonna do any press movements, I'll just do some flyes. You not getting a real workout.

At best they throw a bunch of weight on the leg press and they think they are bad ass. What a joke!

Apparently, these big guys are little girls in hiding because there to 'scared' to squat.

Also, can someone put a memo and tell these guys that have been lifting for 3 weeks to stop wearing wife-beaters. Your not big dude & even if you were it's still gay.
About the squats its their problem.. If you are talking to the beginners it will take time before they start performing them. Not the best excersise to toss some weights on like you just to at the beginning. Well leg press is an good mass exercise aswell and i dont see a problem in throw a bunch of weights on it (As long as you lift it right)

When it comes to wife-beaters: who cares?! You are not in the gym for fashion cat walk. (as long as you dont smell like ****) Most of the people are in the gym to train and dosnt bother what other people are wearing.

I squat. Squatting is one of the most anabolic exercises one can do (especially when done heavy!)

I'm so happy to see there are actually guys who squat. When I originally started this thread I almost had a heart attack because most of the responses where to the affect of "I don't squat" and exc.

If you read this whole thread you'll see that 99% guys who don't squat are offering up BS excuses. 99% of them don't do them simply because
'they hurt' or 'there hard'. This is confirmed by the fact that many of the people who finally started doing them said they didn't do them prior because 'they hurt' or 'they were hard'.

I squat. I just don't really care whether the other people in my gym do or not. Why would I? What concern are they to me? I'm getting the results I want, and that's all that matters. I don't need to run to bee bee dot com and belittle everyone who does things differently than me. Maybe people are happy with the results they are seeing. Who am I to say anything about it? It's really none of my business to begin with.

I go to a pussy ass gym where very few people squat. I speak to some of the guys and they dont squat because they find it too much hard work. The bottom line is, the most effective exercise for your body is also the most taxing on the body when performing it, it takes a lot of physical and mental energy to squat effectively. I squat twice a week and really push myself, otherwise there is no point.

I weigh 167lbs and can squat around 220lbs, which isnt that much, but i see guys much larger than me who have much larger legs who squat the same or less weight than me. My point is that a lot of the people in my gym just dont push themselves enough on this exercise, you should be exhausted after a squat session.

People also dont realise that your legs are the strongest muscles in your body and also have the most endurance. They require lots of stimulation with heavy weights, sometimes high reps and more than 3 sets. I see some guys in my gym benching more than they squat, im like 'get some some weight on there man!' But i dont tell them that!

My pussy ass gym is at home.

And I do squat, atg, 'spite of knee limitations. Hurts something you wouldn't believe if I pause near parallel, even with an empty bar. So its sit down on the calves for me.

Just finished a high volume cycle, 4-10 work sets, 5-10 reps. Was goin' great guns. Guess what hurt my knees, and terminated the cycle......going up the ladder into the loft to do some plumbing!

So it's goodmornings for high reps......'til the knees heal up. At this rate, my hams will be bigger than my quads!

Squats and deads are the ones that bring on the "dreadful rush" in me. It feels like I'm going to die, but it feels like such an awesome way to go!

As for the excuses not to:

Knees. My knees are/were bad. I have/had bad patella femoral syndrome (yes, actually diagnosed by a sports medicine doc) and my knees can send shooting pains through my legs like you wouldn't believe.

But guess what? Squats HELP! When I'm doing squats regularly, my knees don't hurt. They haven't actually hurt in quite some time. As with many knee problems, strengthening the muscles surrounding them is the best medicine. Jogging, is what tears my knees up more than anything.

Back. I have a problem in my right lat. It pulls out frequently. But never from squats. If you do squats correctly, and don't try to be an ass hole and load up more weight than you can handle, your back will be just fine unless you have a structural defect. Just make sure to always squat in a cage with safety bars at the correct height. They've saved my ass more than once!

I freakin' love squats. And I hate them. I hate them because they're HARD! I love them because they're HARD, and it feels awesome to meet my goal each time I get under the bar.

If you don't squat...don't. I don't freakin' care. But if you don't, think of why you don't and consider whether your reasons are sound...or if you're just a big pussy. :P

After all, if my skinny ,30-something, weak ass can do 'em....
