Hello

Hi new here too. I have been working out for about a year and have been learning so much from BB.com and these forums. You guys are great, thanks.
I did one show last month, and currently I'm trying to put on some more muscle - will hopefully be competing again next year. I think in bodybuilding though.

I'm Mr. Huge 6'3 and 335 need help getting rid of weight!

Hey Guys new to this forum. I just got back to the gym after about a 5 year layoff. My weight had hovered around 265 for about 10 years (I was 210 in high school). I was in a really bad car accident hurt my back pretty bad (2 herniated discs) and the weight has been packing on. I finally got to where I can go 30 mins or so on the eliptical machine without taking 4 ibuprofins and now I'd like some advice about working out. Some people say I should try and lose at least 30 lbs or so through alot of cardio before lifting weights. What do you guys think?

Here's my routine
Monday, wednesday, friday and saturday

35-40 mins on the eliptical
burns about 650-700 calories.

but I can't seem to lose much whatcha think?

Talking G'day everyone

I've been browsing this site for a while and found it very informative, moreso in the over 35 section.
Theres a hell of a lot of knowledge here and I look forward to picking your brains for advice.
I started at a PT gym in Feb this year and am greatly motivated by the results. It's interesting to look back at my past eating/exercise record and realise the mistakes made.
I usually was always on the thinner side but could grow a beer gut when not exercising. So I'd figure I'd eat buggar all food for a few weeks, do some bicep curls and get rid of the love handles.
Hmmm..couldn't figure out why I wouldn't gain much muscle or 6-pack stomach.

Plenty to learn here!!

I have back issues Dav6100 as well...oddly enough from a car accident about 15 years ago. My lower vertebra have started to fuse together and like you, I need to be cautious about what I do so as not to cause myself too much discomfort.

My understanding is muscle building is just as important to losing weight as cardio work. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism becomes and the more calories you can burn throughout the day even when you aren't specifically doing cardio. I avoid free weight exercises and use machines where I can support my back to minimize the strain on my back.

I've made some pretty good progress over the last couple of months, so feel free to have a look at my page and what I've been doing and see if you think a similar plan would help you out at all.

Cheers.

I'm not really new to bb.com, but, nearing my 35th birthday next month, I guess I'll be official for the over 35 section. Although I've never been into "bodybuilding" in the true sense of the word, I have been involved in sports, sports training, olympic style weightlifting, and now, just overall strength development. I've been very fortunate to have associated with and learned from some of the best NCAA football strength/conditioning coaches around, so most of my posts and perspective come from a sports development background rather than bodybuilding.

I keep a journal to post some of my workouts but have not been faithfully keeping it up to date because I figure that nobody reads it anyway. Anyway, this is a good section with more sensibility than some of the other sections on this site........

New too

I am a 37 yr old serving in the military overseas in Iraq, I am trying to put on some serious muscle mass, however I am having alot of trouble. I am taking suplements and that seems to be helping a little, but I am getting frustrated with the low gains in mass, I am definetley getting stronger than ever but do not see the results in mass. Any ideas on supplements that have worked for others or routines others have used in this situation?

The Misc forum is dominated by teenage boys with chips on their shoulders. It's can be an entertaining place to visit but if you were looking for an intelligent discussion, that's not the place to find it. There's a Frequently Asked Question thread on the whole issue of "reps" and how to manage them.
New here... and I plan on getting HUGE, looking like that guy on the magazine, making dramatic changes to my eating habits, and tightening my belly... hey, gotta set the bar high, right!?

Glad I found this forum....looking forward to some "mature" dialogue where I can hopefully learn a thing or two without the 17-year-old know-it-alls telling me how stupid I am!!

Great site. Just trying to regain some of my dignity. Former Marine looking for his muscles...now where did they go? Hard work should help me find them.

Thumbs up Intelligent answer...

If you're new to Bodybuilding.com, you'll find that this particular section tends to be just a little quieter, a little more sensible and a little more respectful than some of the other forums. We joke and fool around like everyone else, but we draw the line at calling people hurtful names or insulting their intelligence.

Some of the members here have been bodybuilding for years and others are just starting out. Some folks here compete, some are trying to get back into shape after years on the sofa and many simply bodybuild as an end-of-the-workday stress release. But the members here all have one thing in common: an interest in working out with weights.

No one likes feeling like an outsider trying to work into a group, but you'll find that all of the regulars here are very aware that it wasn't long ago that they too wrote their first post here. To help you out, here are some common questions and the answers that we usually offer:

1. "I don't want to get HUGE"

Regularly exercising with weights will not turn you into Mr. Olympia or Ms. Olympia. Those professional bodybuilders dedicate their lives to their sport and it took them years and years to get there. It isn't going to happen just because you lift weights three or four times a week.

2. "I just want to look like that guy/girl in the magazine"

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you're over 35, it's probably not going to happen. Those magazine models are usually discovered after years of competing in fitness or bodybuilding and they prepare for a photo shoot just like they prepare for a competition. Plus, those magazine photos are airbrushed, digitally edited and shot in the best possible lighting. I've yet to meet any competitor who has a six-pack of abs in their off-season, so it's unrealistic to set that as your goal.

Having said that, bodybuilding is about setting a personal goal for yourself. That goal might be to compete, to model or just to not be embarrassed to see yourself naked in front of in the mirror, but no matter what your goal is; make it a realistic one and tackle it in small steps. You'll get there with hard work and self-discipline.

3. "I don't want to make dramatic changes to my eating habits"

You cannot have it both ways. Living a healthier life means just that: living it. If you think of losing weight or bodybuilding as a short-term goal rather than a lifestyle change, then you'll only find yourself giving up in frustration. You don't have to go all-out and eat nothing but health food, but you also have to accept that it was a combination of a poor diet and inactivity that put the fat on. If you want to lose that fat then you have to change both.

4. "Why can't I lose this belly?"

There are many answers to this quesion but the one that seems to work the best is "Have more patience". Think about how many years you let that fat accumulate...if it's been growing for ten years then it isn't going to all melt away in three weeks or even three months. Most frustration comes from setting unrealistic goals for ourselves. Your body will shed fat and look better if you treat it right - I promise.

5. "How often should I work out?"

This really depends on what your goals are, but a good rule of thumb is that it's better to do too little than to do too much. Most folks here train anywhere from three to five days a week and usually not more than an hour or so per day.

6. "I posted in the Misc forum and now there's a big red bar under my name!"

The Misc forum is dominated by teenage boys with chips on their shoulders. It's can be an entertaining place to visit but if you were looking for an intelligent discussion, that's not the place to find it. There's a Frequently Asked Question thread on the whole issue of "reps" and how to manage them.

~~~~~
We're all here to learn from one another and if you have a question, then chances are that there are at least three or four people wondering the same thing but who are too shy to ask.
Welcome aboard!
As I first started reading I was wondering where you were going with it, then as I settled into it I completely agree. Like you said, we are all here to learn, so when advice is posted then I would hope people take it as good advice. We can all build our best bodies with help from others.
Not really new to the site, but I just started paying more attention to the "Over 35" section. I've been a regular on others, and I guess I'm trying to not admit that I'm over 35 yet.
Anyway I'm 37, back in some kind of decent shape and looking for the next level of fitness. Hello to all, looking forward to the interactions.
Just getting started at 46 yo
Hired a PT, since I don't want to kill myself. LOL! Never took exercise seriously before.
Got serious about my diet (5'7" 158 lbs. 22% BF), and work out MWF, and try to stay active the other days (I like to take moderate hikes on weekends).
My short term goal is to reach my ideal weight (supposedly 148 lbs. for my height), and 12% BF. Then, increase muscle, while staying lean.
So far it's been only a week, but the lifestyle change feels good!
One question: My PT seams to be a big fan of supersetting, though not to the extreme: for example he'll have me work biceps, then triceps, then back and forth for 3x15 total sets. After that, abs: crunches, lots of crunches. I appreciate it since it lets one muscle group rest while working the other, but does it make sense?
I'm pretty new here. I joined just over a month ago. I love this site. I have learned a lot and I enjoy the forums. I have had a lot of fun putting my profile together. When there is any improvement I can't wait to change my stats on my profile page. I feel like I'm one of the oldest women on here but I don't care. The advantage of being old is that you care less what people think lol
Hello all!
I'm Al!
I found this site in Men's Exercise & figure I'd give it a shot. Also since I don't have alot of people to talk about body building & fitness I am here on the internet looking for help & insight into whatever it takes to help me get my body to where I want it.
I joined a gym 3 weeks ago & have been steadily increasing my workouts & changing my eating habits to be more healthier. I have found it hard only because I am 38 & have never eaten healthy and had a daily beer drinking schedule. Well the drinking has stopped & I haven't had fast food in two weeks so here I am to get help & tips.
Hi all!
New here as well. I've been lurking for a few months on and off and figured it was time to join. There are some really great posts here in the over 35 section and some really scarey sh!t in the MISC. section! LOL
I've been lifting for about 3 years and I've made some decent progress but now I'm looking to get a little more serious.
Great site
