How many of you guys are doing the program alone without a spotter? I'm worried I'll need someone to assist me when doing bench press. Since you're always supposed to be able to do the reps then maybe it's not necessary to train with someone? Thanks.

i'm assuming you're talking about advanced novice:
http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...Novice_Program
you add weight as you would normally (5lbs), except on the light days. what you posted is correct. the following Monday you would squat 110. if you can add more than 5lbs on the squat and you're on advanced novice, you probably shouldn't be.

I'm with you man, I always work out with a spotter. If you work out in a gym then somebody will see that you're stuck under the bar and help you. You can always ask for a spot on bench, most of the time people aren't dicks.
Ion3213, no you're doing it wrong because I'm assuming that you're just starting out. You add 5 lbs every day, you do not do 80% on wednesday. Progressively add 5 lbs per workout.

I never really trained with anyone. With experience you'll learn when not to go for that last rep. But if you are at a gym, ask somebody to spot you. The only hard part is telling them not to touch the bar unless you tell them to.

Seriously, you need to read the first three posts of this thread.
What you wrote out is not any of the programs. We could point out why but if you are missing that information you are probably missing a heck of a lot of other things, too. Best to read the first three posts of this thread so that you are sure to be aware of everything.
Nobody here wants to spoon feed you one thing at a time because you are unwilling to do even the simplest of things yourself.

Go to pg 300 in the book and see what it says.
I can kinda see how you think deadlifting can be 2x a week. Not completely clear, even in the book IMO. It's not, however. Once 1x5.
EDIT: actually, I went back to the book... It's pretty damn clear. I retract the previous statement. Oops.

One last thing guys, do you recommend taking whey and/or other supplements? I was thinking of just eating normally because I'll be kind of short of money. Is it a considerable factor or can I satisfy daily needs just by eating regularly? I have a big problem with eating and I tended to procrastinate and even skip meals because I really don't like eating too much, so if taking whey (which is basically drinking) helps significantly with meeting daily intake then that's another helpful factor. I'm not sure what Rippetoe says about diet because I don't have the book right now, but since he isn't really much of an authority on nutrition anyway I wouldn't take him all too seriously even if I had it. I used to buy whey but stopped and, personally, I don't think it's cost-effective, thought it can certainly help, especially post-workout. So what's your take on this?

Get approximately 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight per day (or more). Other than that hitting the proper caloric total is the most important thing

Regarding microplates... Would I simply go to a hardware store and purchase two 0.5 kilogram pieces of chain, or what?

I'll try to shoot the videos on Wednesday.
But I still got some goood advise last time I did the squat. The guy told me that I'm doing it the wrong way.
Then he showed me how to do it: He put the bar on his neck, put his feet straight and barely did an half squat.
I asked him why professionals are doing it different than him, why they're going deep. He responded that I would f*** up my bones that way and that I can ask any doctor. I think what caught his attention was that I really go deep.
Another guy was standing next to us and listening. He also approched me and said I'm doing it the right way and that the guy was talking BS.

Big thanks to Farley, Cody, and other contributors for this very helpful thread.
I'm starting the classic routine. Been watching the DVD and working on my form. I'm using light weights while I get more comfortable with all the moves. Only thing I'm unsure about is Squats. I had knee surgery few years ago and very nervous about squating super heavy weights three times a week. 1.5 times a week should be plenty for my situation. Surgeion and physical therapist told me to be very careful with Squats.
I'm considering doing DB lunges, jump squats, or wall squats in place of A or B squat. Any other ideas or feedback are welcomed. If my gains are a bit slower that's ok, my emphasis is on staying completely healthy and injury free. I want steady slow gains without setbacks.
