combating depression....
I'm new here so maybe I don't where I should be looking, but am I the only person that uses trainning to combat depression? I would like to know if it helps other women? Or you know even if your not prone to depression if you see a difference in your moods when you break from regular trainning routines?

It's like prozac for me. You are not alone. I had to take a rest week last week, I didn't know how I was going to handle it.
But I made it through... also told a few of my friends what was going on so that they would listen to me. And not let me turn hermit.

I moved a few weeks ago, I don't know anyone here. I'ts strange to be surround by so many people and not know anyone. I did start preparing for the coquer the coast yesterday, I have seveal rides and a few runs lined up. Hope all the work lifts my mood soon. I'ts just nice to know other someone else feels the same. Everyone I know thinks I'm crazy. They keep saying I should be happy I'm not doing all that exercise. Sorry for rambling... I'm waiting on the rain to stop so I can go run.

I am right there with ya!
I find myself battling depression all the time. I use working out as my way of controlling something, my body, when I feel I can't control things in life. It works and is a healthy outlet instead of destructive measures that most use.

Hi Princess, I've definitely turned to exercise and nutrition to balance things. Medications are "not" an option for "me". My main problem was never depression, but I've struggled with anxiety, which often left me feeling depressed because of how it interfered with my lifestyle. The two often go hand in hand. Let me tell you something...I IMMEDIATELY noticed a difference when I eliminated various foods, but when I threw exercise in the mix, it was on girl. lol I can't wait to see the complete benefits in a year. To answer your question, yes I can tell the difference within weeks when I slack in either area. There are exceptions, but most people would be better off with a gym membership and healthy grocery list for both problems. Miss T

I'm bipolar and chose not to use medication. I watch what I eat because that does have a huge impact. I workout and I love the feeling I get afterwards. It's hard to be depressed when your doing something positive. I stay clear of stimulants (including caffeine) if at all possible. So far I've been able to maintain being level.

I have only been training for about 1 month so far, but i'm utterly amazed at how good i have felt since i started. I think it's a perfect way to combat depression, and alot of other issues in general

I've struggled really bad with this. For me it means zero energy for working out. Part of it for me was seasonal affective disorder last winter/spring, but I realized that my biggest problem is most likely estrogen dominance. It's worth reading up on, as it is such a cycle you get caught in and it spirals you downward.
I've also had great results with fish oil for my depression. And B-6 helps me cope with stress, so that's always an added benefit.
If I can get myself to lift or run it helps tons, but there have been long periods of time when I just have NO energy for any of it. I'm trying to get past that.

Last year after giving birth to my daughter I was diagnosed with POst Pardum depression. I never experienced anything like it. It was very painful. They prescribed prozac for me but I refused to take it. Instead I decided to start working out and eating better. A year later and over 50 pounds lighter and never taking one anti-depressive I feel 98% better! I'm still working on that 2% but one things for sure....changing the way I ate and working out was the best choice I ever made with my health!

I have so far avoid the use of antidepressants, my doctor wanted me to after the birth of my son.I had severe depression including postpardem unfortunately though by son died so I didn't see how they would help.I've suffered from depression on and off every sense.I find if I stop training for any period of time that it comes back full swing. The only problem with this for me is that I sometimes take my training to far.Like last year I trained for an ultramarathon but I was training so much that I made my self sick and ended up being hospitalized for a week.I started the weight training this time because if you want to build good defintion and strength you have to have balence.I'm hoping that weight training will help teach me balence.

I'm sorry about your son. It definately helps with my moods when I eat right and exercise. I was also prescribed meds for stress/anxiety and couldn't take the side effects, so I started lifting! Helps alot, though it gets a little rough in the winter still! Hang in there and keep with it!

I originally started working out to feel better about myself. Now, I feel like I've accomplished something, but I'm nowhere next to feeling good. My depression runs too deep.

Get yourself a heavy bag, helps me greatly. I get to work out all my frustration on it everyday.

Good deal, I agree with you on the anti-depressents. A big part of my family went through that, and they would have been better off just staying away from them. I even hate to take any pill because of it. 3 of them went to treatment for poppin' too many of them, like 20 a day. My parents wanted me to take medication for ADD, and I wont even mess with it.

It's good that you know yourself well enough to make that choise.Alot of people just take it without ever realing putting any thought into.I think it's choice everyone has to make for themselves.

I've never had an issue with depression but I know without a doubt that if I have a crappy day, all I have to do is work-out or run and it's all good.
