New Twist On Placebo Effect
This article was in my paper yesterday. I thought it was interesting:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science...n-health_x.htm
Quote:
Doctors have long thought the placebo effect was psychological.
Now scientists are amassing the first direct evidence that the placebo effect actually is physical, and that expecting benefit can trigger the same neurological pathways of healing as real medication does.

No, my computer crashed like a month ago and I have to reinstall everything. I got dial-up connection too, so this could take awhile. I didn't know it was that big of a file....

Not really a new idea much at all. Placebos (which, really, in the end serve as a contextual prime that activates existing associational information) have been shown for years to influence the release of neurotransmitters and influence neural activation. Think classical conditioning.
No one really into the modern science of psychology or physiology thinks that one can separate the physiological from the psychological or vice-versa. They are not and could not be two separate systems. Our psychology (e.g., perception) influences our physiology and our physiology is the mechanism of sensation.

No, the idea itself isn't new. But this is the first I've heard of there being studies with evidence to support it.

^^ there is no spoon
There have been quite a few studies done to show the effectiveness of the placebo effet
In one that I have read, a participant was given and electrical shock at say, 50V and he would report the pain from 1 - 10. he was then injected with saline but told it was a short-acting local anaesthetic. he was then shocked again at about 4 or 5V and he reported a lower number. Ok, no big deal, he was shocked with less so ofcourse he would feel less.
The interesting part is that after a while, they would shock him, inject him, and shock him again but without lowering the voltage. The participant still claim that the pain was less even though nothing had changed.
Placebo is awsome in some cases

I've been saying that for years too. And for some reason, people like me less because of it. I just don't get it .
