Ron Teufel Death
Did steroids kill Pro Bodybuilder Ron Teufel?
If this is true, will anyone care?
Will anyone stop taking steroids?

Ever heard the quote "Guns don't kill people, people kill people"?
Same thing applies here.

People will care, but it won't change anything.

What was the cause of death listed on the death certificate?
Long-term steroid use could have aggravated genetic problems like early heart disease or high blood pressure but they could not direcly cause his death unless he died of isulin shock but he's not even competing anymore so he probably wasn't using that.

Ron Teufel
My Name Is Michele Teufel, The Wife Of Bruce Teufel, The Eldest Brother Of Ron Teufel. On Behalf Of The Family I Am Here To Tell You That Ron Teufel Did Not Die From The Use Of Steriods!!!! Nor Any Complications Thereof. It Is Obvious That It Is All Hearsay. No One Outside Of The Family Has Ever Seen The Death Certificate. We Do Not Like Reading All The Slurs About Ron’s Death. Ron Should Be Remembered For The Kind Giving Person That He Was. Steriods Are Bad And Steriods Do Kill But They Did Not Kill Ron Teufel.
Thank You,
From His Family

I disagree with you regarding the statement that steriods kill people, so I can see why it would bother the family to have that be the rumored cause of death.
Sorry for your loss.

Joe Meeko states it was liver failure that sadly took Teufel too soon. I met him in Lancaster, PA, USA years and years ago. He was guest posing at the Mr. Lancaster and even invited me on stage with him to thank me for a drawing I had done of him. I made photocopies and asked him to sign the original. He graciously signed the original and also gave me a free t-shirt. A friend of his remarked that my reference picture was of him with his hair much longer. Something like, "Woah, that pic's from your wild child days!" (Don't hold me to that quote as it's been almost 30 years, but that was the gist of it.)
By that time, 1979 at the latest, Teufel had (what looked like) burned off a really cool tattoo (the skull and dagger on his shoulder). I've often thought that Oscar State's "no tattoo" edict played a part in that, but wouldn't have dared ask Teufel his motivation. Anyway, he asks me up on stage in front of the entire Mr. Lancaster viewing audience and off the cuff says that he'd autograph the Xeroxed illustrations for a buck or two. I forget exactly what amount he asked for or if anyone took up the offer, but I'll never forget the teenaged thrill of meeting the repeat AAU Mr. America competitor and former Mr. USA. Rest in Peace to you, Ron Teufel.

Teufel placed first in the Short class and second overall in the AAU Mr. America in 1977 (the also deceased Dave Johns won that year), 1978 (Tony Pearson with an ultra small waist won that year), and 1979 (the year Ray Mentzer won it).
In 1979, Ray Mentzer won the overall and also the Medium height class. Second place in the Medium height class was Greg DeFerro. Teufel, Mentzer, and DeFerro are ALL dead now. Incredible.
On a positive note, Manny Perry who won the Tall class in '77 and '78 is still alive and doing well in the movies as a Stunt Coordinator and former stunt man. See his IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0675189/ Perry had an 8-pack and was the 1976 AAU Mr. USA.

No, although the kid in Pumping Iron does resemble Teufel a little.
Ron Teufel competed in the IFBB while the person you're thinking of was just a guy in the gym. The one where Arnold shows him how to open up and not hide doing the single bicep and arm extended pose, right?
Highlights of Ron's career included the following:
1975 TEEN AMERICA (AAU)
1975 TEEN MR. USA / 1ST SHORT CLASS (AAU)
1977 MR. AMERICA / 1ST SHORT CLASS (AAU)
1978 MR. CALIFORNIA (AAU)
1978 MR. USA OVERALL WINNER (AAU)
1979 MR. AMERICA / 1ST SHORT CLASS (AAU)
1980 IFBB MR. INTERNATIONAL / 2ND LIGHT HEAVY WEIGHTS
1981 IFBB WASHINGTON GRAND PRIX / 5TH PLACE
1982 IFBB NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS / 7TH PLACE

Hey, no bad about it. I'm just a skinny guy who's watched Pumping Iron about a million times and also had the good fortune of meeting Teufel in person a million (okay, almost 30) years ago. Time flies.

You're right. It'd be great to know whatever happened to that guy.
I think on the 25th anniversary DVD is where they show a bit of video with Mike Katz' son all grown up. That was cool. His kid looks just like him. Well, minus a hundred pounds of muscle.

bodybuilders use vices just like anyone else. Not one bodybuilder has ever died from steroids. They usually have some other addiction to narcotics (Paul DeMayo), amphetamine (Andreas Munzer, Mentzer) alcohol, or prescription drugs.
This had nothing to do with anabolics. This is just another recreational death.
Rest up Ron.
