I'm sure if I showed up at your gym, the clothing that I wear-you wouldn't take me seriously....till you saw me work out.
Personally, I don't give a crap who takes me serious...what matters come competition day is what those judges on the panel think~yet most importantly, what the person staring back at me in the mirror thinks.
The clothing does not determine the athlete. The drive and passion does.
And the way I see it, I bust my ass every day of my life, lifting weights up to 1MR and I am EXTREMELY committed to my diet. I LOVE the way my body looks and I have earned the right to wear whatever the hell I want.
This is what you'll see me at the gym in:

Welllllll.....honestly, yea. No offense 'Princess' and 'Juicy' are worse, though. And I still take you seriously because I know you work. I guess I just think it's silly that so many women complain about looks from men or being objectified. And I think...well, you have something on your bum. It almost says, "Look at my bum." And I'm sure there are women who don't care about the looks or being objectified, but I don't like going to the gym and being percieved as "Look at my bum." If people are gonna look at me, I want them to look because I'm using surprisingly heavy weight.

...and it's seeing people like you in those skimpy outfits with the physique the rest of us are in the gym working towards that motivates me to bust my ass more!! wear what you want. if i had a six pack damn right i would wear a top to show it off! and it's easier to focus on the muscle your working if you can see it at the time.

But Captain Gwen's statement here got me thinking. She loves her body, and by all rights she should cause it looks great! But what if someone who was overweight was wearing an outfit like that? Would we still think she had the right? Sometimes I think people in general are more judgmental of people they don't find 'aesthetically pleasing', ya know?
Just my thoughts from what I've seen here and in life BBing and Figure are BASED on your body, on showing it to people, on making sure it looks great, so of course we judge ourselves more harshly than most other people who aren't involved.

G, I'm not getting uppity...I thought the post was LITERALLY funny. I really did giggle when I read it as I thought about myself.
I am the girl who walks into the gym wearing the CUTEST clothes-but that's who I am. However, I train harder than most of the guys at the gym.
It's kinda like me and karate...I love walking into a semi-knockdown tournament and hearing a couple black belts whispering and giggling "awwww, look, it's Kungfu Barbie!" and then I walk away from my division with the first place trophy.
OR you see me out in my tiny little dress and my hair and make up all done up in my high heel shoes and then my fire pager goes off. On my way as an interior attack firefighter (and Lieutenant of the Company) to hop into my bunkers, don an SCBA and run into the burning building when everyone else is running out.
Because of me I learned long ago to never judge a book by it's cover (cliche I know, but oh so on topic here).
As far as the overweight people in the same outfit and human nature/honesty, I don't care who wears what, as long as you don't dictate what I can and can't wear. If I don't like what I see, I simply look away.

I basically have 3 types of outfits that I wear to workout...
1) Spin Class - Either 3/4 length nike dri-fit pants or short aerobics shorts and a sleeveless dri-fit top (and i always start with a long-sleeved top till I'm warmed up and then ditch that).
2) Lifting - loose fitting 3/4 length pants and either a sleeveless top or a sports bra w/ a wife beater (kids XL - they're cheaper haha)
3) Distance running - running shorts (yes the kind w/ the built-in briefs - they're funny but comfortable) and a sports bra and kiddie wife beater.

Well, to tell the truth I wouldn't wear 'Princess' or 'Juicy' either IMHO it's just stupid. In my defence I'll just say that at my gym (that I almost live in) everyone knows I lift heavy. And I don't get any other looks other than ones of respect. I must admint though to my partiality: I do get kinda judgemental when I see a 'cutely dressed Barbie' with 5lbs in her hands. I'd rather cheer for an overweight gal with 'cute and expensive' clothes on who's busting her chops.

Depends on the time of year. Right now I am wearing yoga shorts. and a yoga spagetti strap top. I also wear another sportsbra under the top. Running shoes and socks also. For the winter I was wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt. That may change this winer.

Haha yea...I gotta wonder if they don't feel a little strange too. Are they thinking, "Why doesn't this weight feel like anything?"

Wow, that's awesome you do karate! And fire fighting! Well no wonder you're in good shape. Definite props to you.
And I definitely think differently of people who really work in the gym. There's a woman in mine who always looks put together, even earrings (although that would just make me nervous lol), and she is BUFF. So you're right, it's definitely the work, not the clothes, that make the woman. But 9 times out of 10, because of where I live, it's teens wearing amazingly tiny clothing and looking for attention. One chick in particular rolls her shorts down and her shirt up lol, like that spaghetti strap is really so hot. If she was squatting 150 lbs, that might not look so silly, but she does it walking on the treadmill.

LOL I dunno. I'm not a nudist so I don't even pretend to understand. My issue may be purely aesthetic: while there are people I'd love to see working out in any state of undress they choose, the vast majority of people aren't on that list. (yes aesthete snob)

I typically wear black fitted longer shorts (Under Armor, that go down to mid thigh-ish) and then a grey 'sports top' that goes down enough to cover my stomach.
The shorts are tight (but long, I can't do the booty shorts haha), but it's not for attention or to show off my body. To me I use it as motivation. Right now some things bulge in ways I don't like (though my fiance and my friends say I look really great considering I have a 9 month old son), so I wear the shorts so that I can see my progress in them every time I work out. The less they bulge, the better I feel. Maybe that's weird, but it's how I feel . But for what it's worth I'm the type of person that if I were going to a co-ed gym by myself I probably wouldn't wear the tight shorts. Only because my fiance wouldn't be comfortable with it, and because of that I wouldn't be comfortable wearing them. If I go to a co-ed gym I go with my fiance, otherwise I typically go to a women's gym (Peak Fitness for Women), just because it's closer

I go to the gym to work out, not to get attention. I feel most comfortable when I wear black stretch pants and a t shirt. I don't feel any differently about girls who choose to wear other attire. You can tell who takes the gym seriously by the way they work out, not what they wear.

When I went to a smaller gym (and was younger!), I wore the sports bra and skimpy shorts. I hate getting sweaty and having fabric stuck to me, so the less covered the better.
But now that I'm a little older and going to a larger gym with alot more intimidating guys, I stick to fitted baby Ts and long knit pants, mostly. On leg day, I might wear some bicycle shorts with a hip length, loose T over them so I can see my leg movements/muscles better while working them.

I wish I could wear all the cute stuff you all wear! I work at the gym I go to and they have strict rules for us. Baggy shirt, baggy pants, look like your a nobody and dont call any attention to yourself while your working out. I feel like if I could show off the body I work so hard to get, I could convince more people sign up for memebership! lol, Oh well.

I find the girls who are fit, working hard and dressed cute motivational. I also find the bigger girls who are soaking their sweats motivational.
What bothers me are the girls about half my age wearing booty shorts with all their not-so-lovely lady lumps hanging out all over the bikes. It's unsanitary. Not to mention I feel kind of sorry for them. Society would reason that I should have a butt like that, and someone who is still in HS should have a butt like mine.
Let me rephrase that..a male jr high student with a butt wasting disease would have a butt like mine. I want booty shorts that have "Flatlands" printed on them. har har

i got to the gym with a men's dri fit tank top and running shorts. shorts are long enough to cover half of my thigh. i love the feeling of wearing a tank top - i can see my shoulders and biceps, plus a lot of extra ventilation.
i'm jealous of gals who look good enough to go to the gym in a bra top. hopefully i will get there too.
butt prints? worst idea ever. around here, it seems that mostly fat girl wear them. i don't get it. their butts are big enough, why do they want extra attention there?

I wear whatever doesn't smell bad yet.......
Typically sports bra, sweats or yoga pants, tank top and longsleeve shirt to layer since it's cold in my gym.
I'm lucky and get to wear the same thing to work. For me, wearing a matching track suit is dressed up.

Gym clothes
WOW! WOW! WOW!!
Great answers all around, As for taking someone seriously, I dont know bout that until I see them hit the weights, As I have heard all of my life "You can't judge a book by it's cover", That is very true, some people(women) will fool ya, Im like you and I do tend to check out outfits, Im always looking for something cute or neat or even different and there are some women in cutesy outfits that can and will handle the weights like a pro.
I cant judge them only respect them. I wear whatever Im feeling that day, if I feel like shorts then it's shorts, if im feeling yoga pants then its pants.
Personally, I love to see other women in outfits where you can see their physique, that pumps me up, like yeah!!!! You go girl!!!
It happened today at the gym, I saw a lady walking toward the weight area, she had on a sports bra and very short camo shorts, she was putting on a tank over the sports bra and I gave her a once over and she was looking good and once she approached my area I proceeded to tell her that only to find out it was someone I had met b4.
I feel like, if you have it, show it, if you're proud and comfortable.
To each its own!!!
More power to them!
As for bigger women, Im just happy to see them in the gym and I try to encourage them however I can.
I do know that there can be some silly acting, dressing women but they dont get my attention, I check out the serious one and try to see if I can get new ideas for workouts.

I want booty shorts that have "Flatlands" printed on them. har har

Why? We all know what yoga pants and sports bras look like.
I usually wear a long sport-bra tank (either black or white, I have a half dozen of each) and a pair of black yoga pants with white athletic stripes (I have about a dozen of these, major clearance at Target last year!). The pants are actually pretty tight, but they weren't when I bought them and I figure they won't be again when I lean out. Anyway, I dress to sweat and I prefer pants because my legs stick to the seat. (Yes machine user)
I used to dress in cuter outfits when I was leaner, and I may do so again if I become that lean again. I figure that if you can't get away with showing a little skin in the gym, where can you? If I saw an overweight person wearing a sports bra and bike shorts, I might think, "Maybe a little too much," but then tell myself that hell, they're wearing ATHLETIC CLOTHES in the GYM, and working out, so I should MMOB and keep my attention on my own workout.
I'm extremely fortunate in that there are virtually no gym bunnies with their hoo-hahs hanging out in my gym. Even those wearing Pink and Juicy ass-print pants are wearing t-shirts over them and working up a sweat on the treadmill while not attention-whoring. It's one of the best features of my gym.

I wear what evers comfy. Have moved more into the sporty tanks with support, sports bra's and 3'4 length shorts. Tight upper half, looser bottom as I dont like close fitting gear when I run... Just makes me feel warmer close to ma' bod.
I personally dont care what people wear to the gym.
I work out at a women's gym and co-ed gym. I love that the women at the chick only gym wear whatever and are there to get healthy. I love that those with different religious backgrounds can wear less restrictive clothing b/c there are no men allowed in the gym. I love that the really curvy girls can wear tight fitting gear and no one gives a rats ass. Cellulite or not, doesnt bother me. In fact, when I see bigger chicks in smaller clothes I am slightly jealous. I'm sure I could wear cuter things but I am just not that confident in my body.
