Yea I love these. Do them on your knees using the smith machine if you don't have a squatter.
3 sets each of:
overhead bb shrugs, power cleans, DB shrugs = good trap workout

Try close grip barbell rows and rear laterals, focus on squeezing the traps.

Well, I was kind of half joking, but it does take more time to read. Anyway, does your gym have a chest-supported T-bar row machine (a hammerstrength machine works, too, but I don't like it as much)? I find that retracting your scapula on this is one of the best ways to work the traps. It's like shurgs but it is forward and backward, not up and down. I've tried the same exercise with dumbells on a bench, and it just isn't the same. The T-bar shrugs lends itself very well to people who train traps on back day, but it can be used on shoulder day, too.

Rack pulls, shrug variations. It's all be said already.
Try some wide-grip cable rows too. I mean as wide as you bench press, and don't be afraid to put some power into it, 'till your traps start burning.

No, I don't know anything about the anatomy but I know that dips got me nice traps. Years ago working out at home all I did was pushups and dips. My traps became so noticeable even with my shirt on that I got random comments from people.
Now I work out in the gym but have yet to do shrugs, because I don't see the need to. Maybe I'm a freak, I don't know, but I've never once targeted my traps.
If you yahoo search dumbbell press one of the first pages that come up is that website so that's how I found it, in case people are wondering.
OP was asking for alternatives to shrugs so I thought dips were good, and that's from my own experience.
