I have done some freestyle back in the day. Its a different kinda beast. Watch some matches before you and try to talk to someone, that isn't in your wieght class, for pointers.

practice with someone who has done it for a few years, you'll pick up on it and learn how to wrestle with a different kind of mindset.

and yea definitely watch some video on it, youtube is great for all kinds of wrestling footage.

one thing i suggest before you practice or compete in fs/greco is that you get a good stretch, especially your torso/ribcage. that was always the most sore for me when transitioning after the folkstyle season

Well, you weigh in with a singlet so remember to consider that if you're cutting weight. Personally, I don't cut weight for freestyle at all (save that for folkstyle), and just try to have fun.

If you're in high school, the competition's usually a bit tougher than what you're used to. The people that are dedicated are obviously more likely to compete in freestyle.

If you're ever taken to the ground, just get on your belly, don't get turned for about 20 seconds, and the ref will put you both back on your feet. Pins are practically instantaneous, and are usually called as soon as both shoulders touched. Pushing an opponant out of bounds (when in neutral) is worth just as much as a takedown (one point).

Don't sweat it, just have fun.
