Pregnancy & Suppliments

What dietary suppliments might some of you think safe for pregnant women? I wouldn't want a pregnant woman to have most of this stuff in her system, while she was pregnant and I don't know how long this stuff stays in the body. My mother did a good job eating health, not smoking, and not drinking while she was pregant and I still came out a little crooked, like most kids where I live.

But my neighbors mom was a health enthusiast who was taking vitamins and minerals when she had her 2 boys. They came out looking beautiful and got good nutrition loaded with vitamins and mineral suppliments. And now they are fitness models and top atheletes.

So I know diet is extremely important for development of children, and impacts what happens in the womb. I learned in school about how pollution in the enviornment can cause hormonal disruption in the body which effects prenatal development. So I would be concerned about some of this stuff.

But what is safe and what isn't? And how much of it might be good?

The general rule is to eat a good varied diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veg (tell that to all the puking pregnant women). A good multi-vitamin with extra folic acid is a good idea. Be wary of taking extra iron, there's a possibility that high iron levels may be a factor in post-partum haemorraging.

Apart from that, stick to what your doctor prescribes.

I would imagine the healthy lifestyle and habits of the mother (her example) had as much, if not more, to do with how they turned out than what she did specifically during the pregnancy.

Just because of the untested nature of so many supplements (even what might be found in the health food store), I'd be wary of most of it. A good multi, folic acid and other basic things like that would be all that I think would be wise. Best bet would be eating clean, good rest, etc.

It's a lesson you have to learn quickly when you have a baby, though...you can't control everything. As far as environmental and what I'd call "human" factors - avoid what seems obviously risky (artificial sweeteners, chemicals and things like paint fumes, etc). But worry and stress can be just as dangerous as those things.

Talking

I would check with the doctor before taking anything. ANYTIHNG !!!. Basically with taking prenatal vitamins you can basically live off of cardboard and still have a perfectly healthy baby !! SO I have not been a obgyn nurse, that is NOT my department, but I would assume she would get plenty enough from those alone. They are different categores of drugs that you can and cannot take with pregnant. I know as soon as her doctor find out she is pregnant, that is the first step of action is the prescription for the prenatal vitamins.

So I wouldnt stress over that too much.. And yes, her shape prior to conecption and GENETICS play a very very big role in what size and immunity the baby will have in later development. Eat right, exercise while pregnant, plenty of sleep, reduce stress, and no drugs or alcohol and mother nature will take its course !!

: )
