Muscle mania, Fitness America Weekend/Ms. Bikini Questions. PLZ PLZ help
Hey,
I am totally confused when it comes to anything in the competition world. I have done the miss usa pageant thing before (which was not at all within my fitness world lol) and other than that I have NO experience with this. I would really like to compete in these competitions (see fitnessuniverse.com) Preferrably in the figure or bikini category, depending on whether my body is going to stay more lean and feminine or naturally bulkier with low body fat. {undecided} BESIDES THAT, I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular contest and I'm needing advice on whether I should start out doing a smaller competition before attempting this... (need help finding one if so). I also saw that this particular contest has a "regional" show that you can compete in. Is this something that everyone must do in order to qualify for the big weekend that they have in vegas? SOOO very confused. Hope to make this my 2010 goal. IF ANYONE HAS SUGGESTIONS ON BEST "FIRST TIME" COMPETITIONS PLZ GIVE ME LINKS AND ALL INFO.
thanks ladies (and gents!)

No, you do not have to qualify at the regional show to compete in Vegas. They allow you to compete in multiple categories. Compete in both to see which one you place best at. In the bikini, there is a swimsuit round where you wear a competition suit, and a sports wear round. For both rounds you must perform a T-walk.

I have worked at and watched a couple of the Fitness America / Ms Bikini Universe events (in Miami). They put on a great contest and you will see a mix of new and veteran competitors.
The bikini class generally has a lot of participation but there are different subdivisions based on height. You do not need to have any experience but it would be in your best interested to bring a number of outfits and to have a professional swimsuit to wear. Of course prepare yourself properly by dieting/tanning/hair & makeup/etc.
In terms of resources for beginners, I do not know of any particular ones but am sure that if you browse around on the net you should be able to find plenty of information. I will take a quick look for you as well.
Good luck with the contest.

I think they have the regional contests to qualify girls for the fitness part of it. I know this past year the top 4 at fitness universe were from the Pittsburg show and Fitness Atlantic. As far as I know you dont have to qualify though. I looked again on the site and I didn't see anything about that. It seems like some of the bikini and fitness competitors do other shows affiliated with this event prior to going to Universe but I didn't see it being required.

I think I am the best person to talk to on this since I've been competing in that system since 2005 and have promoted one. I will be competing at this years show too
Feel free to email me. I will help you out as much as possible.
Should you start out doing a smaller competition before attempting this one?
- not necessarily, but there is a HUGE difference. Smaller regional shows you will probably compete with nor more than 10 girls per division. In the America or Universe, it's more like 50 + per division and there are hundreds in the audience
" I also saw that this particular contest has a "regional" show that you can compete in. Is this something that everyone must do in order to qualify for the big weekend that they have in vegas? "
- Nope... you just show up for any show you want. No qualifying necessary.. not America nor Universe. All shows are open to all ! !
What you do need to know is what category you belong in. That is explained on their website. Also know that each category has its own set of rounds. Bikini has 2: bikini and themed sportswear (think stripper :-). Figure has 1: bikini. Model has 3: Clubwear, sportswear and swimwear. Each category has different judging criteria. Bikini is more of a beauty contest and I truly beleive 50% of your score is your WOW factor. Figure is just like NPC figure but not quite as hard or ripped. And Model is more for commercial grade fitness models. You have to be able to show you can sell a product or idea.
Hope this helps
If you would like, I started a Group specifically for bikini competitors, no matter what federation you are in. I've started numerous tops so come by join and dive into any discussion you wish

So I competed on Sunday at the competition in Tampa and let me just tell you they were SOOOOOOOO unorganized. They were supposed to start the show at 1pm and didn't get started till after 2. There was a huge wait in between each group going out and at the end it took the judges almost an hour to decide who got what place and they made all the contestants line up and wait. The girls were all in their heels standing there waiting for them to FINALLY decide who got what places and then they still made mistakes. The wait was so long that the crowd had started booing all the judges. It was a complete joke. One of the judges works out at my gym and she told me to stick with NPC because they actually have standards as to how they do the judging. My advice......stay away!

OMG that sux...That can happen with shows where there is no local promoter or organizer.. This year, there were so many competitions that i just don't see the main guy having someone in each city to promote and organize it. He does it all from LA
4 years ago, I had actually won a local show in Arizona. But there was a mistake in the transferring of scores to the finally paper to the emcee, and my name got dropped off and a girl who competed in fitness (not Bikini) was called out as the winner (she was in the audience wearing sweats & sneakers). Talking about embarassing... for me, the promoter and the fitness competitor. I wonder if I can find photos of her onstage receiving her trophy and roses in sweats LOL

I've competed at the Tampa show before and Lou is always there doing everything. At one show, He was the photographer, and took the media shots and was also the emcee.
