I think dominating in, and also winning, 6 NBA championships is more impressive.

Not to take anything away from Rivera because what he's done is amazing, but I think closers are put in a situation where it is easier to dominate than it is for players who compete for entire games.

ehhhh

you can also argue jordan had a top 50 player and a crazy good team helping him...................mo is on the mound by himself at the most pressure filled moment in the game

so you were making an example on who is the best post season performer of all time by comparing how a few closers (some of which have good postseason success) blew a save this year?

Well, if that's the case...Rivera has 5X the number of postseason blown saves that Papelbon has.

........just sayin

hurm...ok, hockey isn't big where you come from.

Mariano Rivera has 133 postseason innings pitched.

Wayne Gretzky played in 208 postseason GAMES

from 1979 (when he was 18 years old) through 1997 (when he was 36), he was in the playoffs EVERY SINGLE SEASON aside from 2.

In every single one of those 18 seasons, he averaged over 1 point per game in every single season. That's not counting the seasons from 1980 through 1989 where he averaged over 3 points per game.

I think a logical comparison is that, for 18 years, Wayne Gretzky didn't have a blown save opportunity and his WHIP was under 0.750 every season (with some seasons of a WHIP < .333)

I would say Mo but remember the guy blew the 2001 WS. His #'s are insane but he did blow some postseason games and Mike is perfect in the finals and imagine if the guy never retired after the '93 season. Who knows how many titles they would've won ?! Mo is one of the best pitchers i've seen period but best all time postseason performer ? No.

he blew it on a) a throwing error and b) a bloop hit

since we all know how hard balls are hit off rivera, but the way you explain it it sounds as if he gave up a grandslam

i respect you respect rivera, but no-one has embodied the dominance that rivera has being a solo act as the closer role like no one has had. the feeling that the game is over is daunting to the other team. yankee fans have never had a period where there was a thought that rivera would not dominate that night. his numbers speak for themselves. even when gagne was dominating in 01' . . rivera was still the more feared closer.

the detrimental feeling of hearing enter sandman in yankee stadium symbols the iconic dominance of rivera, the best postseason athlete in the history of sports. He's given up one earned run in his postseason career at yankee stadium. no pitcher can say that. no player can say they preformed that well anywhere. he is as close to pitching perfection as God himself would allow.

and the home run he gave up to sandy alomar ? don't think that was a bloop. and in 2001 did that go down in the box score as a blown save ? and the hit to david ortiz in 2003 ? put the yankee pom poms down and be fair. jordan is perfect in the finals

Also I would like to add Roger Federer to the mix. I know tennis is not a team sport and doesn't necessarily have playoffs, but the guy has the most major tournament wins. Pretty clutch to dominate an individual sport like that.

I dont remember the exact stat but since '96 rivera has 14 six out postseason saves, the rest of baseball has like 6 combined or something. Pretty impressive.
