ok mum order me pizza everynight feed me kfc spicy chicken wings with icecream waffles and maple syrup for dessert and a couple of weight gainers to chug down then i will agree i dont need weights to get big.

army guys?

Don't get me wrong, I have a ton of respect for anyone in the armed forces, but it seems like there's always 1 or 2 of them who feel the need to show off their talents in the weight room.
There's one guy who always comes in, grabs a squat rack, and proceeds to do supersets of pullups, pushups, powerclean/overhead presses (not sure what it's called :P) with an empty bar, lunges up and down the weight room, back extensions, situps, etc, etc, etc, all while keeping the squat rack... for over an hour.... Keep in mind these are all bodyweight exercises, except the couple of sets of powerclean things he does with the empty bar, which to be honest doesn't look like it's doing much to me. Most of the other army guys on campus use an outdoor park nearby where there's pullup and parallel bars around, or they just use the pullup rack we have 20 feet away from the squat rack...

Also another guy, used the squat rack today for supersets of pullups (ridiculously violent whole body thrashing neck craning to get chin above the bar) and burpees, with 3 people waiting behind the racks...

I may not be the biggest dude in the gym (yet :P), but come on now, at least use weights if you're taking up a squat rack, even curls would be better than pushups

Oh yeah, also, buddy of mine, who's always been in pretty good shape. Does p90x type of workouts, and is in pretty good condition most of the time I've gotta say.
First, when I told him I was taking creatine, he told me to have fun when my balls shrivel up. Then recently, told me how much water weight protein powder adds to you, and it doesn't really add any muscle. I'm pretty sure when he took it he just got a little fatter (extra calories, duhhhhhh), and assumed it adds water weight? Hell if I know, but damn, idiot much??

Not really. Not all women over 50 in the gym are wasting his precious time like he implied, only the majority are BUT some old broads really pump iron and are not wasting time. I was in the gym this past weekend and saw a woman in her mid to late 60s doing a circuit of bench press, stiff legged deadlifts, and clean and press. Will she be going up in weight anytime soon? Probably not. Is she staying in shape and getting a good workout? You bet. At least she is working harder than the 16 year-old bench-n-curl bros.

There will always be older women who come in and play with 3lb dumbbells and sit on a machine for 20 minutes. Odds are if you need that machine you aren't training, you are merely hitting the gym to "work out."

Are they really wasting their time? Would it be more effective for these people to sit at home and watch TV instead? If you've stuck with it for 3-4 months and haven't noticed any change wouldn't you either stop going or change what you're doing? Even if someone decides to change one meal a day to something healthier and improves their cholesterol or blood pressure by a few points, they're still becoming healthier as a consequence of going to the gym. Just because they don't make any changes in their appearance, it doesn't mean that they aren't getting anything out of going to the gym.

Any of the following changes would make it worthwhile.

I honestly feel that we are all taking it over board. Just do your thing and forget about everything else.

I also want to state it clear that while I do agree with Efilon... He could of phrased it better. I know where he is coming from my gym is full of older people that are so high on there ego thinking they are actually doing something when in truthfullness they are just wasting time.

Okay, I kid you not on this...

This middle aged guy was doing super-fast pressdowns on the cable, and would let the weight fly up when he was done, to the point of it lifting him up with a crash on the stack...

Same guy was doing some sort (hammer?)curls with a 45lb plate, and was in a lunge position, using hella momentum and staring at his biceps.

Sure, I was paying attention to my workout, but I had to make sure I wasn't within 10 feet of this maniac.

Well he could of phrased it better but I still agree a lot people have no clue what they are doing in the gym. I had this dude take away my leg extensions just so he can sit on it and chat on his cell phone. I told him dude you have 5 seconds to get off or I will take you off.

Guy at my gym does the same thing. The dude is built like a mac truck and before he started doing the whipping and flinging with the weights he would usually follow some pretty solid routines. Hoping to get a chance soon to stop him and see what he's working toward.
