Boy shoots polar bear while trapped on drifting ice

Pretty crazy story.

Cliffs:
- Uncle and Nephew go on hunting trip
-snowmobile they are using breaks down, begin walking to nearest town for help
-Uncle and Nephew seperated, boy ends up on large piece of ice that breaks away (basically on a floating ice island)
- boy trapped on island with Mother polar bear and two babies for over a day
-bear gets too close to boy, boy shoots bear
-boy rescued and baby bears taken by authorities.

How did they get seperated? I would think that if you were in the middle of nowhere in sub zero climates, with no transport then keeping an eye on eachother wouldn't be that hard to do.
