Anyone else frightened by death and/or getting old?
I'm scared of dying... the prospect that at some point I will cease to be. This is not gonna open up and religious discussion but assume that there is no afterlife. it scares me that I won't be around and I wont be able to continue to experience life.
it also scares me that someday I will be old and and wont be able to run, jump, do all the fun things in life. i will be weak, feeble, and will look like crap. it really freaks me out. anyone else?

Nope, but I used to be. I've gone through enough in life to appreciate it while I am here. I accept that I won't always be around, and I try to live so that I won't have anything I wish I would have done differently. I'm an atheist, which I think helps in some ways (no religion debate). I don't have the anxiety of worrying about eternal burning in an afterlife. I think the most likely thing to happen is that my conscience will cease to exist entirely, no living on in other realms or anything. That used to be depressing to me, but then I think about how I didn't mind it so much 22 years ago when my conscience wasn't around.

The scariest part to me is the fact that there might be an afterlife and I dont know what to expect. The thing is nobody really knows for certain what is going to happen. I would be much more comfortable if I knew that there was no spiritual continuation....

My Grandad swam everyday right up to his death at 95, he was in better shape than men 50 years his junior. No reason at to be a weak arse ragidy old vegetable when you're old if you don't want to be.

Not scared of death, obviously I don't WANT to die. But it's an inevitability of life.
I definitely am scared of being weak, feeble, etc. I feel like I'll be depressed once my energy and athleticism start to fade...

I don't think it's possible for nothing to exist after death. If you believe in each person having a soul, or any kind of internal spirit you cannot destroy that. It will simply leave the packaging that it is in (the body) upon death. Which is part of the reason why I think there is a spiritual realm we can't see all around us.
Energy is not created or destroyed in the universe, it is reformed into other things or transferred into different forms of energy.
I'm not scared of death. I live my life the way I want to and try to make good decisions and keep a clean conscience.

the fact that energy isnt destroyed doesnt mean our consciousness survives.

I'm scared of injury, but not death or aging. I want to be older than I am now, granted I am only 18. I suppose that will change in about 5 years once I am full grown. But death I just don't know enough to be scared. In a way I'm excited. Not that I want to kill myself or anything, but it's the biggest mystery in my life since I've lost a number of people close to me in the past few years.

You're right, energy cannot be created or destroyed. Now, 22 years ago did you mind not existing? Of course not. Do you think your soul existed then? Preposterous, you hadn't been conceived yet. But when you were born, so was your conscience, or "soul". But matter cannot be created, so the "soul" obviously isn't matter, just simply the operating system of your mind or something similar. When you die, you're right..matter isn't destroyed..but we've already established that no extra matter was created in the making of your existence, so that has nothing to do with it. Therefore it's entirely possible to imagine there being nothing after life..just think back 22 years ago and thats it, get what I'm saying? It's hard to explain.

Think about how you will annoy the crap out of everyone on a bus as well when it takes you 43 minutes to walk down the aisle and get off.

just talking to my housemates about this, I firmly believe in 15-20 years we will be able to slow down the ageing process drastically (reverse dog years). In 30 I believe we will be close to immortal in terms of natural biological threats.

I feel sorry for you
It must suck having nothing to live for
I have had personal experiences in my life and the lives of people I know shared with me which point very strongly to their being a spiritual life after death.

how does thinking after you die you dont exist mean you have nothing to live for? seems the one who knows their journey ends with life has much more reason to appreciate it.

If u think about it actually has freaked the **** out of me the notion of going bye bye while everyone lives on.. but i think keep doing what you love and enjoy everyday dont miss oportunities and you will be fine, last thing i need is to be old and have all kinds of regrets about my life and not going for what i truely love, so im doing it all now while im young... let the chips all fall were they may, but yeah bro dying must suck alot, its really weird that we are even aware of it, most animals just react, but they arent aware that death is innevitable, to them it just happens, but us, we are too smart for our own good...
but yeah havent really paid any time to think about dying, too busy doing other **** i love.

If you're journey ends with physical life there is nothing left to appreciate when you are gone. Only the living can appreciate your legacy. In your eyes you will become nothing.
