I'm shopping for my first quality folder. No more cheap blades that come free with the random **** you buy. Right now I'm looking at the SOG Aegis with a Black TiNi finish. My only concern is, if I take my knife to get sharpened, will it mess up that cool looking finish on the blade?
If you are going to use the knife, then the coating will rub off with use anyway, it's a part of life if you're going to use coated knives. Unless the sharpener is reprofiling or regrinding your blade, then he will most likely not scratch off the coating.
I would recommend the sharpmaker as well for touching up blades, but reprofiling and taking out chips would not be easy with the SM even with diamond rods....

Good point. Would you recommend just saving the $10-15 and going for the regular satin finish? Not gonna lie, the only valid reason I want the black TiNi is cause it looks cool.
I looked up youtube videos of that spyderco sharpmaker. Man that thing looks cool. Maybe I'll pick one up, if I become a collector.

Isn't the coated version the same cost? I always go for non-coated blades, especially for users.

I'm partial to anything Cold Steel, I have several knives from them and my carry folder is a Pro Lite drop point 4" blade. Have them send you a free catalog just to get some good ideas about what you'd like to get in a folder.

Yeah Cold Steel looks like they have some pretty awesome stuff. My friend showed me his AK-47, was beastly. I was just looking at their site. Man the Spartan looks awesome. Not something I'd carry, but awesome regardless.

I really hate cold steel's advertising, especially Lynn Thompson's "warrior lifestyle" and their "look how well this sword can slice a hanging piece of meat"........

Would recommend the SOG Vulcan over the SOG Aegis, VG-10 is better than AUS-8. Also the Vulcan has a very good locking mechanism (no assisted opening on the vulcan, however it's quite easy to open, has a flip design, and feels VERY solid). Love mine.
Oh, and IMO don't go serrated or tanto point on it.
one of my kershaw's had a coating on it and it never came off from sharpening. i did it myself and had no problem. used one of those kits you can find at any decent outdoors store (wooden block, a couple of different sharpener rods and angles to choose from)

I wouldn't spend a lot on an everyday carry knife, no more then $30-40. My current is a CRKT M16. I abuse the **** out of my knifes and have a tendency to loose them. I do spend a decent amount on my outdoors knives though.
Plus, if I have to stab somebody I won't feel bad about throwing a cheap knife in the river.

If you're looking for a high quality folder then I'd recommend the Emerson CQC-7 Wave. Between my firefighting and paramedic shifts, technical rescue, tactical work, etc I go through 2-3 folders a year. This is the best one I've come across.
The one reason I don't like the SOG Aegis is because one handed opening is a bit tricky due to the small thumb knob.
Take your knife to somebody who has experience sharpening these types of knives. As was said, the finish will naturally get worn due to use. Avoid buying the black blades because you want a slick looking knife. They only look cool if you don't use them.
Im going to have to say I am really likening my kershaw zing that I picked up today.

This thing is awesome. I have this and a couple DMT stones and do all sharpening/reprofiling myself. It takes some work but I've got quite a bit of practice.
Check out some of the knife forums for more input on a good 'inexpensive' quality folder. www.bladeforums.com is one of the best I've seen out there for info.
I personally prefer the all stainless Spyderco Endura(plainedge as I hate serrations). They're not real expensive and very handy.
Whatever you decide make sure you can put it in your hands before shelling out any $$ for it.
As for coatings...they do have their places esp where corrosion comes into play but realistically if you use and clean your knife regularly that won't really be a problem. Ultimately it's all about preference.

I would save nearly a hundred bucks and get a decent gerber, buck or kershaw. The build quality is practically the same, the steel is practically the same and if you really, actually, unbelievably have to use it for realz - then you won't cry nearly as much when you snap the tip off or gouge a big chunk out of the edge and have to reshape it with a grinder.
By far the most important part of any blade is that it is razor sharp. All the super nifty nonsense in the world isn't worth more than about 30 clams to a person with a brain.
Learn to sharpen it. Keep it hair flinging sharp. If it won't fling hairs - sharpen it some more.
I really hate cold steel's advertising, especially Lynn Thompson's "warrior lifestyle" and their "look how well this sword can slice a hanging piece of meat"........
you're contempt made me LOL
personally I feel a cold steel has some really good knives, especially the Voyager series, So I kind of overlooked some of their advertising hyperbole
If you are looking for something a little more nifty op
I have one myself and really can't say enough good things about it, it's well-made and fairly durable, as a matter of fact I'm thinking about getting a second.
And I prefer never to get repeats.

If I ever purchase another Cold Steel it will only be something from the Voyager series. I've carried a variety of the clip point folders and believe that for the price you can't find a better knife.
I wouldn't spend my hard earned cash on any other of the Cold Steel line though(except maybe the Bushman).
YMMV

I agree the Voyager is far and away their best line, I also happen to think that the scimitar is outstanding.
btw the bushman is perhaps the biggest lemon that they have ever produced, If you're interested in one make sure you get a second-generation version.

Thanks for the heads up on the Bushman. I probably wouldn't ever get one, but I do like the concept.
I am looking to get a couple Voyagers in the 3-4" clip point plainedge variety.
I carried one in Iraq in '03 and used it for everything imaginable. Not only did it perform admirably but when I got back I gave it to a ex girlfriend who was getting ready to deploy.

yah you probably want to stay away from the bushman,
other than that I fully agree with you on the Voyager. The best thing about the Voyagers is that you get such a nice blade In such a light Knife

You can get them pretty cheap from some dealers like 'The Cutlery Shoppe'.
oh, well then disregard what I said.
The bushman is actually a pretty good blade, the pocket bushmen is the lemon.
Sorry for the mixup
