Sorry, I haven't been in the forums in a while. Seems like most of my posts kind of get ignored, so I have just been lurking. Probably due to my stupid newbie questions and partly due to the whole "clique" thing.
Anyway, just wanted to stop by and tell all you guys your doing awesome!

Congrats Ed on the 5 year mark, very inspirational!!

I'm still doing great, I'm only at 10 months though. This New Years Eve will be my 1 year anniversary. It will be the first Sober New Years for me in...well...I CANT remember....maybe 35 years or so.

Keep on Truckin fellas.

Hi all,

I've been a lurking member of BB.com for a while now with no posts. Seem to spend a lot of time of the injury/recovery section. lol. Ran across this thread and wanted to throw my hat in the ring.

I'm 37yrs old and have been sober for the last 2+ years. Growing up in New Orleans drinking is the norm and started hitting the bars at 18. Worked as a Chef for ten years, didn't help either. Very hard lifestyle. It got to where drinking till 6am was becoming common place.

Well, when I finally had enough I gave it up and joined a gym. This time it was the real thing. It became a new lifestyle for me. Actually taking care of myself, who knew. Ran across a Craigslist find that I couldn't refuse and started my own home gym. Let the gym membership expire and haven't looked back. I do miss the hot little 20-somethings dressed like their looking for action though.

I'm a hard-gainer, that has been working around a few injuries, but I feel I look and feel great. I don't get any verbal complements, however, I do notice the looks. Works for me.

Looking to hit 40 at a running pace, and make-up any damage that may have been done to my body over the last...whatever years.

Strong lifts.

10 months sober is something to celebrate! For me, its been 7 and a half years. My first New Years was tough. I remember being in bed at 9pm, trying to watch football and ignoring the phone calls from my so called friends at their parties. It took me 3 years before I went out on New Years again.

Congrats on your sobriety !

I don't know why I am posting in this thread. I don't have the challenges that you are all talking about (although I still have my own). I have not had a drink in almost 18 years, but I never had an issue with it. Just stopped drinking because when I met my wife, she didn't drink, so I just didn't.

Anyway you all are an inspiration. Good luck to everyone here and keep being strong!

Thanks for the support everyone.

Anyone have any issues with your significant other while being sober? My wife still drinks...she can get pretty sloppy on the weekends. I don't know exactly how to approach her. She has already told me I have a "holyer than though" attitude since I quit drinking.
I don't think I do, but I do know it's hard to handle when she gets wasted. Maybe I just need to go find things to do when she gets sloppy.
However...lately I find myself wondering if she will ever give it up. I love her so much, but it can be very stressful for me.

Congrats on your sobriety !
Congrats on 7 years. In my area we have one of our spiritual retreat fundraisers on new years and the other one on st. patricks day. They have been the only years that i actually remember seeing the ball drop come morning and have all been a great time.

Anyway you all are an inspiration. Good luck to everyone here and keep being strong!

For me it is still an uncomfortable situation. i usaully won't even allow my girlfriend to kiss me when she has been drinking. On the occassions that she has more than a couple drinks, which isn't very often, it is better if i am not around for them. It is alot easier for me to deal with for her just to keep in touch via text messages than for me to be around. Normally will take advantage of the night and have a night out with the guys.

Thanks ! I've gotten back to going out now but not the party scene that I was used to. I don't see the ball drop very often anymore because I usually fall asleep before it comes down ! St. Patty's day was always a big drunk as well for me. That one is a bit easier to avoid festivities. For 20+ years, I worked with a buddy on a fishing boat in the caribbean. Every St. Patty's day, we would hold special "green fishing" tours. These were just party excursions where the lines never dropped into the water. Frankly, thinking back, I hardly remember any of them. One big blur. Amazing I am still alive.

It is amazing isn't it ?

Even after all this time, I do not like to "recall" some of those times. Some were fun, most were stupid and a waste of 20 years of my life.

I can sure relate with this!^^^^^^^^^

This year will be my first new years sober and my wife still wants me to go to the party we have gone to for the past 15 yrs. I know that I will not drink, but still do not want to go.....probably will make a quick show and bail out, then come back for my wife when she calls me.

Check out a new years party for the sober by the sober, you will have to witness it for yourself, to believe all the fun had without alcohol! I worked in a night club opened all night on new years. Amateur night, people go out and drink like an alcoholic. What a mess! I kept that job a few years after I got sober, doorman but felt more like a baby sitter for drunks! It was like now I'm on the out-side looking in, how sad. In a strange way It may have helped in my early recovery, I was young and I do not recommend working in a bar to any alcoholic!

I just can't seem to tolerate other people drinking too much anymore. You can't carry on a conversation with them and the whole time I'm looking at them and thinking..."is THIS how I used to act?". What a waste of life I have committed all these years.

I think I will take relivin's idea and try to find something locally here that is a sober Party.

Interesting. I don't really have a problem with other people drinking. Quite often, I do find myself wanting to smack them on the head and tell them they are acting like idiots. I want to shout "take it from someone who knows" !

Its funny though ... when I was boozing, I always thought of myself as the life of the party. In college, I was one of the big offensive lineman, doing whatever we wanted .. after that, I was running a party boat and drinking then was "just part of the job". Now, often I see people acting like they are the life of the party and it looks quite pathetic. That's the troubling part. For 20+ years, I thought I was the life of the party when in reality, I was just pathetic. Sad !

Sad !

Me too Brother, sad indeed. But also OVER!

I just happened to see this thread and I never had a drinking problem but my dad is a friend of Bill's and I just wanted to stop in and say I am proud of all you guys and girls that are working thru your addiction. It might not mean a lot but comming from someone who has lived thru it and seen the changes I just wanted to let you all know I am PROUD of all of you doing something about your addictions.
My dad and I had no relationship before he quit drinking, he has been sober now for 17 years and he has been my dad for the last 15 before that he was just some guy I hated for what he put us thru.
Hang in there anyone who is struggling as a child of an alcholic I have the utmost respect and admiration for you guys working to change your life.

I'm new to this site and stumbled across this thread. It never crossed my mind to see if there was a recovery thread.

I took my last drink in June of 1997 so working on click off year 13th year this next summer. One of the things I share about my life is when I got sober I made a list of all the things I wanted to do but couldn?t because of my drinking. When I got sober I was not in the best of shape and I had taken a few years away from cycling competitively. As a result I was a bit overweight and not in the best of health.

I got my legs back and started training hard as going back and racing bikes was one of those goals. I have raced a lot over the past 12 years but admit after 30 + years of racing I was burned out and had not raced in 2 years. I gained about 40 Lbs and got sloppy and fat.

Almost 4 months ago I decided like at other times in my life to take control of my life and go back to being the athlete I have always been. But, I have no interest in racing bikes again. I work an endless 70 hours a week so my time is very limited so I joined a gym near my office. I slowly started riding a life cycle and as I peddled I became interested in body building.

I?m one of those people who has to have a purpose in my activities. I can?t just ride a bike for fun; I have to train to race. I am the same in a gym; I can?t just work out so I decided to get into body building. I hired a young guy to train me and like a true alcoholic I was obsessed with working out. Fortunately I?m used to this regimented lifestyle from my cycling days.

So, I?m up at 3:45AM and have my coffee, check some business things online, off to the gym that opens at 5AM. I train for 2.5 -3hours and shower and go to my office. I record everything I eat, calculate my calories burned (estimated actually) and record my workouts. So far in almost 4 months I have lost about 30Lbs and am feeling great. I hope to bring in my 13th year of sobriety and 50th birthday at 12% BF (current 17%) and feeling and looking bulky. I make it to a noon meeting and work until I?m done which sometimes is 7-8PM. All this about 6 days a week and still spend some time with my lovely wife and 2 dogs all who are happy to see me when I get home.

I wish you all well in sobriety and in your physical training. Sober, you can do anything you desire. I know I have done it!!
