Harsh vocals emphasize the cookie-cutter aspect of most DM for me. Lots of black metal doesn't rely on blast-beats, but they're also victims to the harsh-vocal phenomenon. You'd think Metal fans (Who almost unanimously consider themselves "Broad-horizon" listeners) would be a little more leniant and open-minded towards bands that don't use harsh vocals without just passing it off as "Lame".
There's too much "anti-conformity" still built into the metal genre and the mindset that surrounds it...I don't get it. Maybe I never will.
