Think about how far back it set the development of man.
Do you know about Plato, Anaximander, Aristotle etc? These guys existed hundreds of years before Jesus, and they knew the Earth was round. They tried to understand the world in terms of causal mechanisms. They pondered about epistemology and innate knowledge. They theorised about the universe being boundless and life forming in temporary abberations of chaos. They made enormous leaps and strides in human knowledge
Yet later on, Jesus was born and 'God did it' became the central explanation for everything for the next 500 years. And hey, if anyone offers a rational, objective opinion to how the universe works, lets stick them in a boiling cauldron or invent grotesque spiky corkscrew things to stick up their bums.

btw, just out of interest, can anyone link me to any sites where dawkins tackles Islam? I'd be interested to hear what he says about the religion. Everything I see seems to be him battling with christianity.

You must have watched the wrong video then, because the one in this thread had a perfectly good answer.

But honestly growing up I was taught to hate the like of Darwin and others of his ilk. I got years of casual reading ahead of me now. What's the best/most interesting book on evolution I can go get at the library?

Wrong, Islam also believes that humans were created by God, and did not evolve from any other organism. It's just as illogical as Christianity.

I am not mad about the topic. I'm mad about the purpose of the thread. It's intended for trolling, if it wasn't you wouldn't have made it and just continued posting in your other thread at the very least. Either way, this isn't twitter or your body blog.

Religion is the poison of the mind that hinders true spiritual growth. My definition of spiritual growth includes self introspection and realization.
Even the slight ability to change oneself is more valuable than any power over the external universe.

Congratulations on taking another step in your journey of personal introspection.
I read your other post, but didn't see any details for what has brought you to this decision. It sounds like you had very strict parents who sheltered you and your brother with the idea of attaining a "perfect" Christian state, probably through following rules and orders of behavior. Please correct me if I'm making a false assumption.
Coupled with those rules would be the fear of going to hell and fear of Satan. At one point, believers are confronted by the statement, "Do what you're told or the devil will come get you." It's this kind of mumbo-jumbo that can seem simple when applied to correcting a misbehaving child, but can give an incorrect perception of Christianity, God, and the state of God's plan as revealed in Scripture.
As a Christian, why would you be afraid of hell or Satan? I'm not saying that it's uncommon or wrong to have a healthy wariness of Satan, but as a believing Christian, we have the reassurance and exhortation of Scripture to not be afraid. God wants us to live without fear, not be a slave to it and its whims.
