Do a show every year vs. another show in 2 years?
Looking for opinions here.
I can afford to take a cpl. years off from competing before I step back on stage,..My goals are to gain some more size and thicken up a bit.
Is it better to take the 2 years and really apply my training toward this? or would doing a show in say 1 year jeopardize my goals?
My thoughts are twofold:
1. Doing a show in a year will keep my body more anabolic due to the bulk/cut, bulk/cut.??
2. Taking 2 years off and apply that time to just pure Mass building.
Wouldn't it be benificial for the body to do a bulk/cut each year??? Iduno.

Chris, I dont know that there is anything particularly anabolic about a bulk/cut cycle. THe only real reason you want to do cuts at all is so that you can stay closer to contest condition so you dont have to move a mountain of fat to be ready. But, as far as prviding the best environment for building muscle, your much better off carrying some extra body fat. THe longer you can keep that "off season" going with some extra chunk, the more muscle youre gonna build.

I agree with 2 years. If you can manage the extra bulk and don't let it get away from you, take the extra time and thicken/week piont train. You will be glad you did.

take a couple years off
literally if you could put on just a couple of pounds of muscle mainly on your chest and legs you're good... but at your age that could really take years unfortunately

Hey,..watch it,..I may be an old fart but I can still K!ck your A$$,..
Definitely need mass in chest and Legs,..but not true,..in only 18 months I put on some serious muscle and gained some intense strength. take a look in my journal,..the last page in the journal section of Contest prep,..I posted the gains I made in pictures from Oct. 2008 to Oct. 2009.
I used to think this too tho,..but that belief, not being able to gain much more size at my age is totaly bogus.

I didn't mean it as an insult. Obviously you can put on size but it's slower. My post was poorly worded. All I meant is that at your size and age it is going to be harder to put on quality size than it would be for a younger, less developed guy.
Just to compare... from June 2008 I went from 115 pounds 16% bodyfat to 180 pounds 14% bodyfat this October (Bod Pod tested) at the same height (5'8"). That's like 58 pounds of LBM in 16 months.

I know,..I was being sarcastic with ya,..no foul vibe received. But I too was your age once and I have to tell ya,..I made the most gains in my physique at my age now than when I ever have in the past. Like I said,..I fell to the same belief as well,..but it is such a myth.

Why worry about it? Either way you're likely still going to do the same things. Eat right and lift hard.
You gain what you gain and at any point you can say enough is enough and lean out to compete again. If I were you I would look at the pics from past shows in your new class and see what the winners look like. Work until you feel you can be competitve at that level. If you're there right now ... great, if you feel you need more time, take what you need. Some guys just love to be on stage and compete and they don't care about placing. Personally I'm a little more competitive than that and I train to place and move on.
Only you know your driving force and modivation

Thanks Barn! I have to get used to the idea of lugging a few extra pounds after being on prep for the last two years! It's the many faces of bodybuilding.

Time off
Two years seems like alot of time away from the stage but its really not. If you spend four or five months getting ready then another two-three months to add back the wieght you lost its almost a year. So before your next show you have about 3-4 months of training at full strength or less. Taking additional time will alow your body rest and time to make improvments due to increased strength.
