That site up there has an INCREDIBLE e-books collection in English. Whenever I find something like that, I do a massive download for later. You never know when those kinds of databases might go down due to bandwidth limitations.

When studying the lives and works of the scholars and saints, you have to sit down and think hard about the message: it's not always obvious.
The default behavior is that one should do one's best, make preparations, take precautions, then rely on God for success of the outcome, and be satisfied with whatever God decides. That describes the second quote, which is applicable for most people in most circumstances.
However, we often find scholars and saints purposely throw themselves into God's Will and lead a life of extreme asceticism and dependence upon God. That is so they can test the limits of their faith, cultivate true certainty in God's promise to protect those who call upon Him, and to purify their hearts of any love of comfort or dependence on anything besides God. So that describes the first quote, and many non-religious people who try this might quickly realize that they lack trust in God or are dissatisfied with the trials through which God sends them.

The Prophet's (pbuh) sense of humor:
Narrator: Ash-Sha'bi
Text: 'Adi bin Hatim (may God be pleased with him) took a white thread and a black one, and when some part of the night had passed, he looked at them but he could not distinguish one from the other. The next morning he said, "O Prophet of God (pbuh)! I put a white thread and a black thread underneath my pillow." The Prophet (pbuh) said, " Then your pillow is too wide if the white thread of dawn and the black thread of the night are underneath your pillow!"
(Refer to the verse of the Quran 2.187 that says 'Eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread')
Source: Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 36 Click here for original Arabic Text of this Hadith
Many people think the verse refers to the color of strings/threads/ropes being discernible in light, when in fact it's talking about the light of dawn showing up on the horizon.
