I sit on the computer like all day...
... is that really bad?
I still go to the gym 3-4 times a week consistently and lift heavy and throw in some long sessions of low instensity cardio when i feel like it... but when i'm not at the gym i'm just sitting down at my computer browsing forums and ****.
is this hurting my progress?
should i at least do cardio every day??
originally my goals were to gain strength and i wasn't that worried about body fat but now that i've gotten stronger i have developed a nice pack under my belly fat and would like them to be visible now!!
thanks for the advice

personally i feel it may be hurting your progress, no matter how warn out i am i still throw in at a minimum of a 10-15 minute session of cardio after each work out. Even if not for your health, just be more social, life is short the average American is awake for less than 500,000 hours in their life time, why waste it on the computer?

well.. the internet provides plenty of interactions with other humans, just not face to face.
also, i wouldnt be social doing cardio, i'd have my headphones in on the treadmill haha.

yeah, doing nothing but lifting weights and sitting on the computer, you wont lose any weight. but like strongiron said add some cardio 3 or 4 times a week and you'll shed the fat
tons of people have full time desk jobs & work out
however, i spent 2 years with no job and not going to school. its a freaking waste of life, i'm no life coach but atleast get a part time job dude.

I actually lost about 45 pounds doing just this. I just really started being consistent with my cardio a month or so ago.
There is ZERO reason that you can't lose fat if you sit around most of the day. cheeseandrice actually contradicted his own statement:

As a matter of fact, it is probably EASY to lose weight with a desk job because you can have a more rigid and scheduled nutritional plan.
Figure out your maintenance, eat less than that, lift heavy weights, and so some moderate cardio. Not that hard at all.

It's fine, a calorie deficit is a calorie deficit wether youre sitting or sleeping. -3500 calories = a pound lost any which way. I used to worry about being sedentary but I soon realized that diet will take good care of you.

Dude i've gone from 440 to 280, while still maintaining my daily routine of computer gaming and forum surfing/chatting and guitar playing at my desk. it is not impossible, and it definately doesn't slow down any progress. again, all about your nutrition and the workouts you do, do.

Uh.. This is false. Just because you're sitting at the computer means you won't lose weight. He/she just needs to be burning more calories than they eat. Technically you can lose weight while sitting at the computer.
OP, I would suggest throwing in 60-90 minute walks on your off days, and on lifting days 30-45 minutes. This is what I do and I pretty much do the same thing as you, and I'm losing.
I still lost while sitting at the computer and just lifting, but I was eating a lot less too. So its really your choice:
Eat more and do cardio or eat less and not do cardio.
For comparison: When I didn't do cardio and just lifted, I ate 1,000-1400 calories a day to lose.
When I threw in the cardio, I have to eat 1800-2000 to lose. I also feel 10x better and my muscles are always a lot fuller.
Eating less I got tired really easily and was just really lethargic.
So it's all up to you, OP.

You dont need to do cardio to lose weight sure throw some in there but dont over stress it. I wake up, 10min warm up, workout, go to class, go home cook my food/laundry/dishes, browse the web(facebook, forums that interest me, research stuff thats intriging, put music on ipod). I eat in a calorie deficit of 700-800, I get my healthy fats(40)/1 lbs lean mass = 1g protein(40)/carbs(20). I'm still losing weight.. If I do cardio its not lose weight but to increase my cardiovasculuar for when I play drop in sports, snowboarding, snowmobiling. My 0.02c.

i dont think it will hurt your progress that much. but you could just take two or three breaks during your internet surfing and go walk around for a bit to keep your metabolism up.

I don't do any cardio. I've lost about 11 pounds on my cut so far. Just eat 500 calories below maintance, you should be fine.

I'm not gonna be one of those guys that says don't do cardio because you don't necessarily need it to lose weight, but it does help things go faster.
However, I believe in personal fitness beyond just gaining muscle. I was raised an athlete and was the fastest on my varsity team when in school. I also have a job that keeps me at my computer for many hours of the day, but I still work on cardio each morning because I don't like the idea of being winded trying to walk up three flights of stairs (where my car is parked in the parking complex at work). I also like to be able to go on nature hikes with girls and not being the spazz that is dying after only hiking a few miles.
Heart illnesses also tend to run in my family and I don't intend on dying earlier than I need to.

Short term Goal: To consistently wake up early so I run every morning.
Mid term Goal: To be able to run 10 miles without slowing down, like I used to.
Long term Goal: To look good naked again.
Random news: Really wanting to start my bulk, but want to keep cutting because of an upcoming reunion.

I do the exact same thing and still lose a pound a week. I'm thinking of incorporating HIIT or running a mile or two on off days because I have a fitness test up next year(which I used to always fail due to my obesity)..
Anyway sitting on the computer all day is good in some way too.. I mean time just flies and your goals are much nearer.

personally i go to work, work out (strength/cardio), go home and internets for a few hours, then go back to the gym (more cardio), and i've had amazing results. you don't need to cut out your internet stuff, just do it in moderation.
