jhyaduck,
What your approach toward cutting?
1. Diet (any calorie manipulations)?
2. Workout routine (set/rep scheme)?

Hey man, when you say that your bulk is all out, what do you mean by this? How many calories do you take in during your bulk and is it clean/dirty? I am 5'6" as well but only 145 lb. I am a true mesomorph and am trying to bulk with 2600 cal/day (slow, clean bulk) and would ideally like to be at about 160 lb. after I cut. Should I just say screw a slow bulk and go "all out" as you said? You certainly have some of the gains I would like to have. I am thinking that I might be able to incorporate some of your diet do's/dont's into my program.

Sorry guy, if you're only 145 at 5'6" you are not a true mesomorph. I'm some where between ecto and meso, am 5'6" with a small frame and weigh 160. I have 12% body fat and haven't ever tried to bulk.
Quote:
The Mesomorph Body
The mesomorph has well-defined muscles and large bones. The torso tapers to a relatively narrow and low waist. The bones and muscles of the head are prominent. Features of the face are clearly defined, such as cheek bones and a square, heavy jaw. The face is long and broad, and is cubicle in shape. Arms and legs are developed and even the digits of the hand are muscled.
Other Traits of the Mesomorph
The skin of the mesomorph is thick and the mesomorph tans well. The hair is heavy in texture.
Famous Mesomorphs
Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, the majority of Mr. Universe winners."
|
There are so few true mesomorphs in the world, and they put on muscle without even thinking about it. If you have to think about what you need to do to bulk you're not a mesomorph. Mesomorphs are like the kings of the gym. They bulk eating whatever they want and cut at the same time. I would advise that if you are anything but a mesomorph, which most are, you should bulk clean, otherwise you're health will decline and cutting fat later will be twice as hard.

just a quick question, why do you think it is important now to let arms have their own day as opposed to doing bi's with back and tri's with chest for example? if they had their own day, when would be an optimal time to do them during a split? im trying to figure out a nice split to try out considering how ive been on the usual back/bi, tri/chest etc for over 2 years now

Hey Josh, I've been doing my exercises with a 12-6 rep range and today on my chest day I tried what you used to do and didn't go above 8. Well, I had the best pump in my chest ever and I managed to throw around a lot more weight. I'm still hurting, feels good man.

On your shoulder workouts with smith machine military seated where does your ROM stop? I've heard a lot of people say there is no reason to go below the middle of the face and others go a lot lower. Also with behind the neck how far do you typically go down?
I also have a question on arms...The 1st year of lifting I tried 2x a week bicep and tricep exercises which included 3-4 different exercises on biceps and 3-4 exercises on triceps 2x per week which included anywhere from 3-4 sets in each exercise so for example:
Monday- chest/tris
chest workout 3-4 exercises then I'd go to triceps
Tri's- Closed grip bench press 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps
Tricep kickbacks 3 sets 8-12 reps
Rope pulldowns 3 sets 12-20 reps
(with changing up exercises/rep ranges) etc...I think you get the point
After awhile of this I decided it'd be worthwhile to try and stop working muscle groups 2x a week and change it to 1x a week, but continue my exercises/sets/and rep range.
The reason I'm saying all of this is to get a little advice on what you think might help me as I am getting a little discouraged on an arm size 14.875 in cold 90 degree flex. I'm currently following your workouts almost exactly that you have posted at the first of your journal and they are getting me hella sore which is feeling good. I know that learning what works best for your body individually is most effective and I know that my lack of muscle is probably almost completely a result of bad dieting as opposed to my workout program. But having tried both 2x a week and 1x a week without seeing great results what would you suggest? (btw im getting my diet in check and trying to eat enough to gain weight and although i am only about 170 at 6"1 it is a little deceiving as my legs are tiny compared to my upper body which is a major mistake in my lifting)

So World's was great this weekend. It was good to see the top guys of the WNBF and it was really awesome getting to watch it with the top dog, Jim Cordova! Got to know him pretty well and he is an incredible person, everything a champion should be.
A couple of quick updates...
I will be BULKING until January...February at the latest! So I'll update every so often with a few progress photos. I haven't decided how I am going to go about my diet right now. Jim and I talked about it and we pretty much have the same views on bulking, he just said that I may take it a bit too far, lol. Our macro structures sound to be similar but as far as overall calories and food quality, I may have taken it too far in the past. So I may tone it down to around 3000-4000 calories. I will still eat whatever I want however (reeses, little debbies, taco bell, wendy's, etc...lol), I just won't stuff myself until I'm about to puke every meal like I'm used to.
I will actually post my diet up from time to time just to bring a little life to this thread. My diet will be pretty "dirty" as you will see, but it is how I've always eaten in the past. So try it at your own risk!
Also, we have decided on a show! It will be the INBF/WNBF Universe in June and I promise you that I will bring a physique that complete blows away my current.
And here's a picture I stole from Brett aka Baftub. It was nice to meet you, bro!

Your back is amazing!
The picture of you three is a good comparison picture that shows how similar you are in height and size.
