laid off finally got time to train/diet
Here i go again..... Tues got my pink slip. Probably going to be 4 months before I'm back to work(union plumber). I was traveling an hour to and from and not getting any exercise I let my weight creep up to (im afraid to say 270lbs). I naturally carry a lot of muscle, but its got pretty soft lately and i'm sick up my belly pushing my pants down so i just usually wear bib overalls so i DON'T HAVETO PULL MY PANTS UP.
here's the problem- I get really cranky when I restrict my calories. Any ideas to get the food i need cleanly, and leave out the garbage. I feel its easier to eat better when I'm putting in hours at the gym. Mostly I guess because I don't want the time training wasted.
Another question, is there anything I can eat/take/do to recover from my workouts faster? I've found as I've get older, on a 5 day/wk training schedule I'm almost always sore. the only supps I've ever taken has been creating and glutamine with some whey protein.
My unemployment check will be around 600/week so I'm not going to spend a lot on supps
My goal weight is 200 but baby steps first .I havent seen 200 since my mid twenties.
If i get time I'll take some pics and postem up. The progress ones help to keep me motivated as the lbs come off

Going thru the same thing right now. Laid off and sitting at home gaining weight. Sucks! Not getting fat but I can see an increase in belly size. I started eating lean again. Mostly chicken, turkey, eggs, tuna, salmon, natty pb and almonds. Look into the palumbo diet.

The more high glycemic carbs you eat the more you want. The carbs that convert to sugar fastest. It took me a few years of slowly cutting out things to get my diet cleaned up. Now I blew it with the diet again after some health issues and have to start over. I definitely stay more satisfied eating more protein, low glycemic carbs and good fats. If you eat right you won't need the expensive supplements. Everyone gets cranky when they suddenly go from 4000+ calories and then want to drop a lot of calories. Plus workouts make you even more hungry. I'm doing things in steps this time. Not all of a sudden get strict then get all stressed out about it. Then quit after a short time.

The hardest part for me is the weight comes off so gradual I get bored with the progress . I realize it took years to put the weight on but once I want to lose it and start putting forward the effort I want results right away I have to make 10 lb goals and try big to focus on the larger goal cuz it seems too far away

Can't say I am patient either. I also know when I go the fast route food is all I am thinking about. Then when I do get the pounds off there is no good plan to keep them off. The desires are still there and you eat too much again. It may have slowly got up there but once it was there it comes back a lot quicker the next time. Just sayin, hahaha

I think one of the advantages as we get into the 40's is a better sense of patience. The good news is that there looks like there is a big dude under that not too big layer of fat and skin...think how much further you'de be behind if you didn't have a good muscle base and still wanted to lose weight. At least you get to see yourself become more defined as opposed to just "bonier"... Should be fun..Good luck. Mully

First off I know all about the whole Union laid off program,(union ironworker) sorry to hear about that but that's what you sign up for when you go union.
Anyway, I did the whole workout hard when I'm off then you go back to work and all of a sudden you miss that bodybuilding lifestlye, sleep, eat, workout, sleep, sex, workout, eat. you know what I mean. I say maintain a healthly lifestyle all year round and focus on your goals, Leave the bulking up and triming down to the pros.........Remember that's their job year round

Sorry about the layoff man, are you sure you are going to get $600.00 a week? I thought the cap on unemployment was $405 a week regardless of your income? Meaning if you earn 80k a year you still earn $405 a week.

I just googled unemployment and it states 405 as the maximum so I am not sure what your friends are talking about. But if it is 600 in your state then you should be good!
LOL yeah a hated legend

thanx gung, but i curse my bodytype, because although my muscle maintains pretty well I also hold the fat a long time and have to work hard to lose it. consequently, ive never seen my abs ie 6 pack. Now my wife is whining about how my belly turns her off and its harder for her to get"in the mood" now.
so i forwarned her, " next week Im hitting the gym and stripping off the fat guy for the buff guy and when my testosterone starts going off the charts, and I don't have o job to be at she'd better get her running shoes on to keep me from nailing her 3x /day ....haa hhaaaa

just found this:
Beginning May 3, 2009, through Jan. 2, 2010, all existing and new claims for
?regular? unemployment benefits will receive the additional $45 per week
throughout the duration of their claim, including any training, extended or
emergency benefits that they receive. In some cases, a person?s extended and/or
emergency benefits may be limited by a cap on the total unemployment benefits
that individual is entitled to receive.
When combined with the benefit increase provided by the federal stimulus
package, under current law, most people receiving unemployment benefits in
Washington will be eligible to receive at least $225 a week.
The maximum will be
$611 a week for the specified time period.
Note: People who first apply for unemployment benefits near the end of 2009 will
receive the higher benefit level throughout the duration of their claims.
Conceivably, people who use all of their regular benefits, emergency
unemployment compensation and extended benefits could receive the higher pay
throughout 2010

Your looking at it all wrong. You didnt get laid off. The administration just CREATED 1 more job. Too bad it was yours.
Seriously, I lost my job a fews years back and spent ther down time dieting and lifting. I had a great time doing it. I also went to Vegas a couple of times.
Once I had spent most of my savings I went back to work.
I really enjoyed it.
I made some decent progess on losing while doing a modified keto diet. Look at the stickies in the nutrition thread, it lays it all out.
They said to restrict your calories for 5 days then to carb up after that.
i still lost by not resrticting my calories for 6 days, getting into ketosis for a few days, then eating carbs/pizza, etc for 2 days then repeating.

I can commiserate with you. I too am a union labor member. I've been laid off for a couple of months now. I'm using the time to get plenty of sleep, eat well, allow myself to gain a little weight (not too much), and get stronger. Its been gratifying to watch my deadlift and squat poundage jump up. I say, "take advantage of the situation" and use the time off to grow.

Hahaha, I just started back. The first few workouts only took 15 minutes to make me shaky. I'm 51. I am taking it very slow to get things going again.
